The BBC's Radio One, a popular youth orientated radio station in the UK, has launched the first download chart. Similar to the world famous top40, broadcasted weekly on a Sunday, the download chart will feature the top 40 downloaded songs, each Wednesday at 6PM, on the Scott Mills show.

Lostprophets band member, Mike, told the BBC that "I like to search the internet for new bands and stuff, so I'll look on a lot of music websites and download some mp3s." The BBC and the UK Charts company compile the data from legal download sites (e.g. Napster & iTunes, MSN Music). The first #1 in the chart was 'Flying Without Wings' by Westlife. The chart featured a variety of artists, some of which might not enjoy the same status in the non-download singles chart.

Asides from being a nice addition from the BBC, it marks an important point for the online music market; starting with Napster, it has taken 6 years for it to gain official recognition, status, perhaps respect, that it deserved from the start. Watch its future unfold.

Earlier this month, I wrote about how it's become popular to use eBay as not just a buying and selling platform, but also as a PR platform for such things as selling towns - because you're almost guaranteed to get press coverage for selling something weird. Of course, it looks like there might also be a downside. Last year, a town in California received a ton of press for being put up on eBay, after conventional attempts to sell it had failed. That press coverage helped push up interest in the town until someone "won" the town with a bid of $1.8 million. Of course, as we pointed out at the time, with many such high profile auctions, the top bid is likely to be bogus. A few months after the original auction, it was reported that the sale still hadn't been finalized. Now, exactly a year after the original eBay auction happened, the folks who "own" the town are admitting that the buyer disappeared and never sent a check. Even worse, the sellers then went down the list of everyone else who bid on the town and failed to find a single legitimate buyer. Thus, the town is back up for sale - but not on eBay and at half the price of what they "sold" it for last year.

Back in 2002 there was a tremendous amount of hype when Bridgeville, the small (mostly deserted) California town was put up for sale on eBay. It eventually sold in an auction for $1.8 million - and got a tremendous amount of press attention. The only problem: the $1.8 million bid was a hoax. A whole year went by and the owners of the "town" sheepishly admitted that the buyer (and his money) never showed up. Now, however, the town has been sold again - but not on eBay, and back down at its original asking price of $700,000. Even with the failure of the actual sale to go through, though, people still remember that you can "sell a town on eBay," contributing to the use of eBay as a PR platform beyond just its ability to match buyers and sellers.

One of my biggest criticisms of Microsoft's Portable Media Center platform has been that there's really nothing to watch. You could download a few B-list movies from CinemaNow and Major League Baseball games or copy stuff from your Windows Media Center PC, but if you wanted to put anything else on the device, you had to transcode your video to Windows Media Video format (a hassle I will, perhaps unfairly, put up with in the PSP, but not in a device with the primary purpose of playing back video).

Thankfully, Microsoft has finally launched MSN Video Downloads, the long-promised service to provide daily-updated content for easy download and syncing to your Portable Media Center. I haven't used it, but glancing over the content list looks somewhat promising—enough so that the $20-a-year subscription fee is probably worth it, if you've already dropped $400 on a PMC (and the content works on Pocket PCs, as well).

The details of how this study was conducted are not entirely clear, but apparently, when asked, folks in the UK consider the smoke detector to be the top innovative gadget, beating out mobile phones, microwave ovens and digital cameras. I keep looking for the punchline about how this study was sponsored by a smoke detector company, but can't find it. It's not that the good old smoke detector isn't a useful gadget - it's just that it seems strange that so many people would pick it as the most innovative.
