"In the Amazon
v. Pinpoint lawsuit, which claims that Amazon's personalized book
and music video suggestions infringe on Pinpoint's business-method
patents, Amazon's motion for summary judgment has been granted in-part,
with a judge ruling one asserted patent invalid, but allowing other
claims to move toward trial. BTW, Amazon continues to bolster its own
patent portfolio, picking up a patent last week for Locating Web-Based Product Offerings."

02/05/2005 10:10 PMA 24-year-old former American Online software engineer pleaded guilty
to stealing 92 million screen names and e-mail addresses and selling
them to spammers, setting off an avalanche of up to seven billion
unsolicited e-mails.
Associated Press reports that the stolen list of 92 million AOL
addresses included multiple addresses used by each of AOL's estimated
30 million customers. It is believed to be still circulating among
spammers.
Jason Smathers of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, entered the guilty
plea to conspiracy charges in U.S. District Court in Manhattan today.
He is likely to face from 18 months to two years in prison following a
May 20 sentencing. He also faces mandatory restitution of between
$200,000 and $400,000, the amount the government estimates AOL spent
as a result of the e-mails.
Smathers, who was fired by AOL last June, used another employee's
access code to steal the list of AOL customers in 2003 from its
headquarters in Dulles, Va. He allegedly sold the list for $28,000 to
Sean Dunaway, of Las Vegas, who used it to send unwanted gambling
advertisements to subscribers of AOL, the world's largest Internet
provider. Charges are pending against Dunaway.

The Hubble Space Telescope and beyond
The Hubble Space Telescope and beyond
11/12/2003 01:15 PMThe Hubble Space Telescope can be considered one of the most important
science instruments created so far. Its service record is beyond
impressive, but as it approaches its 14th anniversary of service it is
becoming clear that new instruments are needed to complement or
replace the now aging Hubble. Instruments that will include all
technological advancements in optics and electronics that we have
developed since the Hubble launch in 1990. Hubble will serve for at
least 10 more years, but there is already the project underway that is
aimed to create a new instrument that will help the scientists to
observe in even more detail: The James Webb Space Telescope.

Hubble Telescope Instrument Out of Order
08/09/2004 07:00 PMAn instrument that helped the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope look at
black holes, newly forming stars and far-off galaxies has broken down,
and NASA said Monday it is looking at possible ways to fix it. The
instrument, called the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, was
installed in 1997 and was designed to operate for five years. But it
may be possible to rescue some of its operations, NASA said.
The space agency said Hubble's other instruments -- the Near Infrared
Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer, the Advanced Camera for Surveys,
and the Wide Field/Planetary Camera 2 -- are all operating normally.
NASA said an electrical malfunction may be to blame. A similar problem
affected the instrument in 2001, forcing a switch to the backup side.
Now the backup side has failed, NASA said.

Jeon–Slaughter, Andrew A. Herkovic, and Michael A.

p://www.firstmonday.org/issues/issue10_3/jeon/index.htmlAbstract:The emergence of e–journals
brought a great change in scholarly communication and in the behavior
of scholars. However, the importance of scholars’ behavior in the
pricing of scientific journal has been largely ignored in the recent
debate between libraries and publishers over site license practices
and pricing schemes. Stanford’s survey results indicate that sharply
increasing costs are the main reason for individual subscription
cancellation, driving users to rely on library or other institutional
subscriptions. Libraries continue to be a vital information provider
in the electronic era and their bargaining power in the market and the
importance of roles in scholarly communication will be increased by
branding and a strong relationship with users. Publishers’ strategy
for thriving in the electronic era is not to lose personal
subscribers. Cooperation among the three sectors — scholars,
libraries, and publishers — promises optimal results for each sector
more than ever.
