George W. Bush, leading evangelist...
for Islam

George W. Bush, leading evangelist...
for Islam
07/30/2004 01:57 PM

Young people want to be powerful and imitate those whom they read about in the newspaper.  During George W. Bush's presidency, whom have they read about in the paper?  Osama bin-Laden, Saddam Hussein, Zacarias Moussaoui, Abu Musab Zarqawi, Muqtada al-Sadr, and the list goes on.  Nearly all of these guys are powerful take-charge ass-kickers.  Unlike the Gangsta Rappers whom kids were imitating in the 1990s, the Muslims in Western newspapers don't merely wave 9mm pistols out the windows of their SUVs.  These guys actually do manage to kill the people they hate, often by the thousands.

If George W. Bush had delegated the pushing aside of Saddam to an underling in the State Department or Defense Department and never mentioned the words "Iraq" or "Saddam" in any speech he might not have glorified being a pissed-off Muslim to such an extent.  But as it happens W. has given center stage to angry Muslims for the last three years.  This might encourage older folks with a lot of property to protect to become fearful, vote Republican, and give up their civil liberties in exchange for security.  But for young punks without much to lose one would think that the sight of all of these Arab bad-asses on TV would encourage them to convert to Islam and at least talk the talk if not actually walk the walk.  (According to this International Herald Tribune article, it is already happening in France, especially in the prisons where more than 50% of the inmates are Muslim.)

James Glassman, most famous for predicting a "stocks are still cheap" 36,000 Dow Jones industrial average not long before the '90s bubble burst, rants here about George Soros, who's said he'll spend lots of money to help defeat Bush's reelection. Glassman cites "the monstrous hatred Soros has developed toward the President of the United States--hatred shared by others in his social circle." Funny how the right wing never was bothered by the absolute hatred that Richard Mellon Scaife and others in his social circle showed for Clinton. Oh right, that old hypocrisy thing again.

President Bush accidentally allowed to
be interviewed by a real journalist

President Bush accidentally allowed to
be interviewed by a real journalist
06/29/2004 02:07 PM
The President's handlers foolishly granted a Presidential interview (requires RealPlayer) to a non-White House Press Corps journalist, Carole Coleman, the Washington correspondent for RTE, the Irish public television network. When she asked him pointed, pertinent questions, he became upset when his stock answers failed to satisfy her. An aide to the President later complained that Coleman had "overstepped the bounds of politeness."
Coleman is a mainstream European journalist who has conducted interviews with top officials from a number of countries - her January interview with Secretary of State Colin Powell was apparently solid enough to merit posting on the State Department's Web site.

Unfortunately, it appears that Coleman failed to receive the memo informing reporters that they are supposed to treat this president with kid gloves. Instead, she confronted him as any serious journalist would a world leader.

She asked tough questions about the mounting death toll in Iraq, the failure of U.S. planning, and European opposition to the invasion and occupation. And when the president offered the sort of empty and listless "answers" that satisfy the White House press corps - at one point, he mumbled, "My job is to do my job" - she tried to get him focused by asking precise follow-up questions.

The president complained five times during the course of the interview about the pointed nature of Coleman's questions and follow-ups - "Please, please, please, for a minute, OK?" the hapless Bush pleaded at one point, as he demanded his questioner go easy on him.

Vidiot sez: The White House complained later that Coleman was disrespectful and didn't ask the "suggested question" about what Irish PM Ahern was wearing that day.

Coleman has responded to White House criticism, noting that she submitted her questions three days in advance.
