Broadband Penetration on the Upswing: 55% of Adult Internet Users Have Broadband at Home or Work
http://www.pewinternet.org/reports/pdfs/PIP_Broadband04.DataMemo .pdf

The number of Americans with access to high-speed Internet connections either at home or work is growing. As of March 1, the Pew Internet & American Life Project finds that 68 million adult Americans log on via broadband either at home or work. Fully 48 million adult Americans have broadband connections at home. This is the first time the Project has tried to capture the total broadband universe and the relatively high figures suggest that broadband use is much greater than is widely presumed. Impatience with tiresomely slow dial-up connections seems to tip home users into the broadband column, and this impatience plays a larger role than price of service in home adoption. Broadband in the home is increasingly the norm for the wealthier and better educated in America, as well as long-time Internet users. But there is evidence that relatively novice Internet users are moving from dial-up to broadband more rapidly than before. Rural users lag in broadband adoption, and infrastructure availability is a reason for this. Here are some highlights from the Pew Internet Project’s February 2004 survey:1

- 55% of all adult Internet users – or 34% of all adult Americans – have access to high-speed Internet connections either at home or on the job.

- 39% of adult Internet users – or 24% of all adult Americans – have high-speed access at home, an increase of 60% since March 2003.

- A surge in subscription to DSL high-speed Internet connections, which has more than doubled since March 2003, is largely behind the growth in broadband at home.

- DSL now has a 42% share of the home broadband market, up from 28% in March 2003.

- For the first time, more than half (52%) of a key demographic group – college educated people age 35 and younger – has broadband connections at home.

As I said at the FCC VOIP hearing last week, the real issue is the transformation from the Internet as a subset of telecom to telecom as a subset of the Internet. That means treating voice as an application that can run on any platform, not as the platform itself.

A New Telecom Act?

A New Telecom Act? 02/10/2004 02:47 AM
An article yesterday in Total Telecom confirms what I've been saying for some time: the Telecommunications Act of 1996 is due for a rewrite.

"I think it is inevitable that we will see a new bill," said Bill Bailey, senior counsel for the Senate Commerce Committee."

I also seem to have guessed right on the likely time frame for the new Act: 2010 or so.  With all the money at stake, it will take years for a bill to make it through Congress.  Better late than never. The current legal framework in the US is so out of step with the real world that it must be reformed.

According to a new study, the world’s largest companies were more inclined to outsource HR functions in 2003 than in 2002. And if they weren’t outsourcing at the time of the latest survey, most were thinking about it. Another finding: Those who are outsourcing are, for the most part, happy in their choice. However, while outsourcing increased in many areas, such as 401 K plans and call centers, it decreased slightly in recruiting. In this article, MedZilla interviews the survey’s author and reports on its findings. [PRWEB May 28, 2004]

Spam Costing An Hour A Day?

Spam Costing An Hour A Day? 12/29/2003 04:50 AM
After just doing my once every few days scan of my spam filters to make sure nothing legitimate was caught, I realized that spam seems to be increasing at quite a rapid clip lately. However, my filtering system is working well enough that it's not a huge waste of time right now. A new study in the UK, though, has found that workers can spend up to an hour a day cleaning out their in-boxes. As bad a problem as spam is, I'm curious what these people are doing that it takes them so long to deal with their spam. It sounds like this "study", though, is simply asking business owners how much they thought their staff wasted on spam - so the one hour number is probably exaggerated.

Is Craigslist Costing Bay Area
Newspapers $65 Million Per Year?

Is Craigslist Costing Bay Area
Newspapers $65 Million Per Year?
12/27/2004 04:42 AM
A new research report has come out with the eye-catching claim that Craigslist's job listings (the only thing Craigslist actually charges for) is costing San Francisco Bay Area newspapers between $50 and $65 million in revenue. While there's no doubt that Craigslist is making newspapers lose some business, the numbers look a bit questionable. First of all, it appears to assume that every job listing on Craigslist (at $75 a pop) would have gone to a newspaper otherwise (at $700 a pop). This is highly unlikely. Also, it's troublesome whenever a report comes out claiming that some newer, cheaper offering is "costing" legacy players revenue. That suggests the responsibility is with the upstart for "taking away" money from the incumbents -- when the real fault is with the incumbents for not (a) looking for ways to cannibalize their own businesses before some upstart gets the chance and (b) not responding quickly when the challenges appear. Craigslist isn't costing these newspapers anything. The newspapers are simply failing to update their business models to changing market conditions.

In 2003, excess customer churn cost European mobile operators EUR4.5 billion in unnecessary expenses and EUR5.6 billion in lost revenue – equivalent to 8.6% of total mobile revenues. Controlling churn so that rates are lower than competitors’ is an effective mechanism to continue to grow revenues in a saturating market. Analysys warns that mobile operators must pursue cost-effective churn-management strategies that suit their market position, or face significant loss of market share over the coming years.
