Big Brother Really Exists, And He's Not Who You Think He Is. While most of those in the privacy realm have been focusing on keeping the government from spying on its citizens, the government has made an end-run: Letting the private sector do it for them. ChoicePoint, an Atlanta-based spinoff from credit agency Equifax, now has more than 200 terrabytes of data on us, and as previously noted, they're not always very good at it. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Sleeping through bad smells

Sleeping through bad smells 05/17/2004 11:56 AM
Humans have an incredibly acute sense of smell, but a new study shows that our perception of odors is dramatically reduced when we're snoozing. Researchers at Brown University published a paper in the journal Sleep showing that individuals slept right through the introduction of intense scents indicative of fires. A moderately loud sound woke people right away though.
“As the saying goes,” said the paper’s co-author Mary A. Carskadon, “we ‘wake up and smell the coffee,’ not the other way around.”
Still, I wonder if this is because we're trained from a young age to respond to buzzing, radio-blaring alarms. It would be fun to have an alarm clock that at a pre-set hour spewed a refreshing blast of peppermint! Link

The sleeping giant

The sleeping giant 02/05/2005 09:50 PM

Man, I didn't know that my little late night blurb written mostly to myself would spark such a reaction. I guess I woke a sleeping giant or something. Dave is annoyed, Tom blames it on tools, and Andre wants more flexibility.

The funniest thing is I kind of called for this to grow last summer, and I never really thought about how it affects end users. I uploaded a gallery of 20 photos or so to flickr a while back and a couple people said the feed was overrun with the shots, so much so that they wanted a way to remove them somehow.

For the last few years, I've had a site filled with stuff that I recently wiped in the hopes of starting over. Ideally, I'd like to get something close to Leonard's site, where all my feeds for separate services can live on one page, but there can still be a place to write longer text pieces like this one that dominate the space. I always envisioned One Feed To Rule Them All containing the parts from every sub-section, but after reading stuff like Dave wrote, maybe I'll default to the text blog feed, with other feeds sepate and one megafeed that you could subscribe to, but that tools wouldn't default to picking up.

The Sleeping Beaty problem

The Sleeping Beaty problem 07/21/2004 05:51 AM
"We plan to put Beauty to sleep by chemical means, and then we’ll flip a fair coin. If the coin lands Heads, we will awaken Beauty on Monday afternoon and interview her. If it lands Tails, we will awaken her Monday afternoon, interview her, put her back to sleep, and then awaken her again on Tuesday afternoon and interview her again. The (each?) interview is to consist of the one question : what is your credence now for the proposition that our coin landed Heads? When awakened (and during the interview) Beauty will not be able to tell which day it is, nor will she remember whether she has been awakened before. She knows about the above details of our experiment. What credence should she state in answer to our question?"

In light of the recent thread on the Monty Hall problem, here's a probability puzzle that's even more mind-bending: the Sleeping Beauty problem. Some people say the answer is 1/2. Some people say the answer is 1/3. Some people say there is no answer. Papers have been written which can't resolve this one.

Sleeping with the president is not a good idea. Bush had no answers to big questions, such as 'what happens on the morning after.' The Daily Telegraph reports that documents show Prime Minister Tony Blair signed up to the U.S. policy of regime change in March 2002, a year before the conflict started... after he was warned that postwar stability would be difficult and the U.S. had few answers. Oh, no problem. This week, Bush said he is 'pleased with the progress' in Iraq.'

Now that I'm accumulating my inbound feeds as XHTML, in order to database and search them, I find myself in the aggregator business, where I never planned to be. The tools I'm using to XHTML-ize my feeds are Mark Pilgrim's incredibly useful ultra-liberal feed parser and the equally useful HTML Tidy, invented by Dave Raggett, and maintained by folks like Charlie Reitzel, one of CMS Watch's Twenty Leaders to Watch in 2004 (along with yours truly). ...

In defense of MP3 bl0gs 05/26/2004 10:20 AM
Check out this rant from an MP3 blog reader -- a blogger who posts tracks that he's digging to get his readers interested -- on the threatened medium:
We're all familiar with blogs (ummm, you're reading one now), but now, we have unashamed folks who are not afraid to provide you with a daily song that has been gracing their ears. Good stuff, big bands, and totally the definition of fair use. The average blog user has 12 readers... so... if I give one song to 12 people a day, that seems entirely fair, when compared to say, WOXY radio that had to shut down because it couldn't afford the licensing and bandwidth of its 50,000 listeners.

So, I love it! It's the best of fair use, with the peer spice. Now all we need, is about 3 kabillion more so that these brave souls aren't overloaded, or targetted otherwise.

Best of all is the long list of MP3 blogs, which are a sampler's paradise. Link (Thanks, Th0m!)

In Defense Of Commoditization

In Defense Of Commoditization 07/13/2004 03:47 AM
A couple months back, there was yet another discussion about Nicholas Carr and his assertion that technology no longer matters, since it's being commoditized and no longer offers any competitive advantage. At the time, I wrote an explanation about why commodit ization is good for innovation, because commodities become inputs towards innovation, and (being commodities, after all) they're cheap. Cheap inputs certainly can lead to greater innovation. It looks like Sun's Jonathan Schwartz agrees. He describes why Sun is so desperately trying to standardize certain products to push along the commoditization process. This is not, as Carr would have you believe, to destroy competitive advantage, but to help build it. Of course, you could make the argument that Sun hasn't done enough to really push for standardization -- and even that their hesitation to go a standardized route has put the company in a very difficult position. Still, Schwartz's thoughts are an interesting read. The ideas make sense, even if the implementation has been problematic.
