Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie

Chinese Movie Industry Recognizes Movie
Watching Is A Social Experience
03/22/2005 05:03 PM
Yesterday we noted that the MPAA and movie theater owners were whini ng about how much people coming in an taping movies was hurting their business. The obvious response, we pointed out, is to recognize that going to the movies is a social experience. It's not just about the content (though, that is important), but the overall experience. If they improved that, then people would want to go -- even if they could score the same movie off the internet or a cheap DVD bought off the street. While the folks in Hollywood refuse to entertain this idea, someone (anonymously) in the comments to that story pointed to an article in China noting that this is exactly what Chinese movie theaters have done. After years of declining attendance, they finally shaped up and made going to the movies cool again. They improved the overall experience, putting in better equipment and more comfortable seats. They improved the sound and the lighting as well. It sounds like they also made some theaters to be more like bars, to help attract young adults away from traditional bars. Yet the supposedly "creative" movie people in Hollywood insist "nothing can be done" to get people into the theater.

Madness In Gotham

Madness In Gotham 01/27/2004 10:18 AM
Since its earliest years, the stories of the Batman comics have been intensely psychological. Over the years plotlines have explored the motivations, drives and significant experiences of Batman, as well as the major criminal characters who variously populate the halls of Arkham Asylum and the streets of Gotham City. Batman is one of the most successful and enduring of modern myths, read and watched by millions. As a genre with the concept of mental illness at its core, it is perhaps one of our most popular and enduring representations of madness.

Rental madness

Rental madness 08/15/2004 12:01 AM

There was an ad on TV for a bridal fair just a moment ago. It occurred to me that the bride spends thousands of dollars on a dress she’ll never wear again but the groom rents his tuxedo, which is something he’ll have many chances to wear again. That seems backward to me.

Dell Madness

Dell Madness 08/28/2004 01:03 AM

Dell is driving me nuts.

I ordered Dell's 8400 desktop a week ago and it's schedule to be shipped on 27th of this month.  I didn't want to spend that much so I got a moderate CPU (3.2GHz P4), so so storage (250G), non-gamer's video card (ATI X300SE), and 2G of speedy memory.  X300SE was intended to be just a placeholder for a better graphics card later.  Audio card?  Whatever came with the motherboard.

Just now I checked the price and found that I could get faster CPU (3.4GHz), moderate gamer's graphics card (ATI X800 SE), and top of the line audio card (Audigy2?) for the same price!  I have bought countless computers before and I have learned to live with price drops.  But seeing such drastic price drops even before the box ships is too much to bear.

So I cancelled the order and came over to my blog to vent some frustration.  At this rate, I'll keep on cancelling my orders until there is a severe component shortage.  If there are more people like me, I think companies like Dell will have to offer price adjustements at the time of shipment.  Heck, it's not the money.  It's the ol' feeling of getting shafted loyally in real time.

Update:

I went ahead with the new order and got free 2nd shipping as well which means it will arrive about the same time as my previous order would have arrived.  Nice.

I am starting to understand a little more of how my wife feels when she hounds local mall clerks into making up differences whenever there is a sale.  I couldn't believe it when I first heard of it.  She buys something for X and, if store lowers the price to Y sometime later, then she somehow talk them into coughing up X-Y.  What I don't understand is why US economy doesn't collapse with shoppers like her around.

Update 2:

Aha!  I found the culprit behind the sudden price drop.  In tel cut the price of its CPUs by as much as 35% on August 23rd.Since Dell had a fairly large number of customers waiting to receive 8400 desktops, I think many of them will cancel their orders to take advantage of the price drop.

Midnight Madness At Best Buy

Midnight Madness At Best Buy 09/21/2004 02:24 PM
How many people would you expect to show up on a cool evening at Best Buy for the first release of the trilogy on DVD? Over two hundred and fifty fans, braved the autumn-tinged air of White Marsh, Maryland to attend the Best Buy Midnight Madness event. Joined by local radio station 98Rock and the 501st Squadron, fans were treated to music, free Battlefront T-shirts (for the first 50 in line) and prizes. The biggest prize was the shared interest in the Star Wars Trilogy and the opportunity to own one of the first copies when the clock struck 12:01am on Sept. 21.

I can't fault Chechnyans fighting for their independence but I don't understand how they could justify killing of innocent children.  Even if they somehow succeeded, what would they say to their own children about how they gained their independence?  I used to have some sympathy for Chechnya, but their mindless guerrilla warfare tactics have eroded them away over the years.

As You Slowly Slip Into Madness 08/05/2004 12:30 PM
I don't have any kids myself. But I do have six nieces and nephews under the age of four. How that happened was all my bothers and sisters decided pretty much at the same time to move back to Texas and start breeding. Kind of like salmon. It made Christmas last year very interesting. There were babies everywhere -- on the rug, in the cupboards, swinging from the chandelier. Being the unmarried crazy uncle sitting in the corner, I got to watch all this happen. I discovered a few things about kids that I didn't know before.

PSA: Flash Drive Madness

PSA: Flash Drive Madness 09/27/2004 09:04 AM

pluggies.jpg imageOkay, it would seem we have a serious problem. I love flash drives as much as the next guy (I use them when I need to, sure, but only when necessary), but when one of our nation's most precious resources - college football players - start shoplifting from Wal-Marts just to feed their portable data addition, well... something has to be done.

According to Durham County court records, he is accused of stealing "an assortment of jump drives" -- portable data storage units that plug into PCs -- Sept. 12 at Wal-Mart at New Hope Commons in Durham. The computer equipment was valued at $374.49.

We need college football, and if these "jump drives" (known on the street as 'flash,' 'hotplug,' and 'taking the D train') are going to affect our young mens' ability to play ball, I say we ban them as soon as possible before we wake up to a society plagued by thousands of "pluggies."

Also, isn't calling this kid a punter a little over the top? He has a disease; show a little respect. (Thanks, Joe!)

Midnight Why Am I Up? Notes

Midnight Why Am I Up? Notes 08/21/2004 03:48 AM

Every night on this trip I wake up at approx 2AM. I have no idea why. I get up for a couple of hours, do some writing, or programming, then go back to sleep. I can't recall this happening before. Maybe it's because I'm drinking more coffee than usual? Not sure. Anyway, I'm up, and writing.

I heard a report on NPR yesterday as I was leaving Harrisonburg about the seige in Najaf in Iraq, and how it's a lot more serious than most reports indicate. They interviewed a Washington Post reporter who was embedded with the US troops there. Defying Sean Hannity and his flock who think I should turn my mind off (no I'm not a liberal), this makes sense.

The Imam Ali shrine at Najaf is one of the most meaningful places in Islam. We don't have anything remotely like it in the US, because our culture is so young. This place is like Yankee Stadium to a Yankees fan, or Disneyland to a Disney fanatic. And this doesn't begin to explain the value to Muslims. It's like one of the historic Jewish or Christian places in Israel.

In science fiction, even very bad science fiction, they teach you how to take what you know about one set of circumstances and apply it to another. To see why this is such a mess, all you have to do is apply the sci fi mindset. How would you feel if there was an Islamic army driving down every main street in every town in America? I wouldn't like it, and I bet you wouldn't either.
