In the GNU General Public License (GPL), Richard Stallman was working toward a noble purpose. Software should be free-as-in-freedom, and every user should be able to obtain the source code for the software they use. Unfortunately, that isn't the way things have turned out. The GPL has come to resemble digital rights management (DRM) more than it resembles freedom. Does that sound a little extreme? I'll explain.

About a month ago, Microsoft posted some of its source code to SourceForge. SourceForge is a, if not the, major distribution point for open source software. Microsoft's code was put there under the terms of the Common Public License, which allows modification, addition, redistribution - in short, it allows most of the rights and privileges that we associate with open source software.

Here is the scene: Several of us programmers at a small custom software business have been advocating that we open source our code. We advocate it gently and consistently, and have done so for years. The owner of the company is finally friendly to the idea, but would never seriously entertain the notion because he wants profit and no matter how many times it is described to him, cannot fathom how money can be made with something that you're giving away for free.

Recently, I found a small personal project that incrementally blossomed into quite a large project (for a single programmer). Early on, since I was defining the terms of the project, I requested from the customer that it be made open source. He said "sure," since it made no difference to him.

Last week, I approached the owner at my day job, and told him I was working on another project evenings and weekends. His initial response was not positive, and he said he would think about it. During the weekend, while I was working on the project, he stopped by the office. As he was leaving, the following conversation took place:

I’ve been trying to think of something intelligent and new to say about Microsoft’s recent Office source code maneuver, but Simon Phipps took care of it. Anyhow, when it comes to Office software, I’m less interested in its code (source or object) which should be disposable and replaceable, than I am in its output. Some call them “office documents”; I prefer “intellectual heritage”, “racial memory”, “crystallized thought”, “priceless treasure”, that kind of thing. They need to be taken care of better than they are, I think, and others agree.

Pangea Software on Monday announced that the source code for its PangeaVR plug-in, which was released last Friday, is now available on its Web site. PangeaVR is a free Web browser plug-in that enables viewing QuickTime VR panoramas at frame rates of 150 to 350 fps (frames per second). It's compatible with Safari, Netscape and Mozilla, but it requires that Web pages include HTML code written specifically for its use. Pangea notes that it doesn't override QuickTime as the default viewer for .mov files. The developer is looking for others who can port PangeaVR to Windows and Linux.
