The New Werblog

The New Werbl0g

The New Werbl0g 07/14/2004 11:33 AM

I've been managing the various incarnations of my personal Weblog with Userland's Manila and Radio tools for five years. Hard to believe it has been that long. (The original "Weblog 1.0" is long gone, but preserved at the Internet archive.) Werblog dates to early 2002, as I was preparing to leave EDventure Holdings and strike out on my own.

I still like many things about Radio, but for various reasons I've decided to switch over to Movable Type. In the process, I've also given the blog a slight facelift. All the old Werblog posts have been imported. There probably are loose ends that will take a bit of time to clean up; please bear with me.

I've remapped the domain name so that the blog appears in the same place as before. The new RSS feed is at http://werblog.com/index.xml

Previously I’ve posted graphs of the market shares among the browsers visiting ongoing, but I’ll skip the graphics this time because there’s no discernible movement. So far in 2004, the averages are 53% IE, 32% Mozilla family, 12.5% Safari, 2% Opera, they move up and down around that but not in any persistent direction. Go figure.

An early look at Windows XP Tablet PC
Edition 2004, codename "Lonestar"
11/18/2003 04:27 PM
When Lonestar comes out sometime next year - as announced - it will be a free download. A relatively small download too (about, say 10 MB for the core part, not including any updated recognizers that could be released by then). It is user installable. It installs quickly, similar to any other Windows XP update. You can even uninstall it, should you choose to do so. Existing tablet hardware will be able to run it without major problems. Case in point - I am running it on my underpowered Crusoe-cursed first-generation Compaq TC1000, and I can't notice any performance hit.

You ever say, "I'm gonna go to bed early." But you never do, then you say, "I didn't go to bed early yesterday, so I am today." Yet you still fail to go to bed early. Soon this turns into a week, then a month, then 4 months, and your still tired.

Changes, Changes: Amazon Stops Printing
Pages, MIT Shuts Down TV Music
10/31/2003 08:30 PM
Two followups to popular stories this week. First there was the suppose d legal "loophole" that was going to let students at MIT broadcast MP3s over their TVs. I still don't see how this is any different than something like a Live365 broadcast, but what do I know? Anyway, despite all the news articles saying how brilliant this was for side-stepping legal issues, it appears that not everyone agrees. The students who built the system claimed they had a license from the Harry Fox Agency to use the music, but the Harry Fox Agency said that was news to them. So, now, MIT has shut down the system while the legal issues get sorted out. Meanwhile, as the Authors Guild continued to worry about Amazon's full text search feature, Amazon has possibly modified the system to no longer permit printing of pages. I just went and checked, and I could print out a page, so maybe I'm missing something here - or maybe it's only for certain books. Of course, even if they did implement this, I imagine that the easy work around for this is to take a screen shot of the page, and print the image, but I've probably violated the DMCA suggesting that.
