Samsung Digimax A402: No Optical Zoom

Samsung Digimax A402: No Optical Zoom 04/18/2005 08:22 AM

samsung_digimax_a402.jpgSamsung has announced the Digimax A402, a 4.2-megapixel camera with a 5x digital zoom—no optical zoom to be had. That means, effectively, that I can't imagine any reason whatsoever to buy one, except that it might be sort of cheap. Still, releasing a digital camera these days without optical zoom—when even cameraphones are starting to get optical lenses—is sort of dumb. I'm sure now that I've said that they'll sell millions.

Samsung Digimax i50 MP3

Samsung Digimax i50 MP3 06/24/2005 04:01 PM

samsung_didigmaxmafs.jpgThe nearly-flat camera is the hottest new form factor, for certain (think FujiFilm Z1, Sony DSC-T7, Casio Whatever), and Samsung is not staying out of the game, this time upgrading their older model to produce the i50 MP3. As you can guess, this five-megapixel sidearm is not only a pocket-ready camera, but also will support MP3 playback from SD and MMC cards—sounds great to me. Details are scant at the moment, but LetsGoDigital has some inital info (and really, until someone gets a hands-on, there's not that much more you really need to know).

Samsung Digimax U-CA3 Reviewed

Samsung Digimax U-CA3 Reviewed 06/30/2004 09:23 AM

samsung_uca3.jpg imageIt's always dangerous when a manufacturer, let along a reviewer, calls a camera (or whatever) "fun." Oh gee, just what I wanted on my 3.2-megapixel camera, "rainbow-colored blinking "disco" lights," "animated 3D avatar start-up screen," and "desaturated colors!" (I'm unsure that was meant as a "fun" feature). So basically, the Samsung Digimax U-CA3 is a kids camera, which is fine -- I support giving children the crappiest of all options in consumer electronics if it means keeping the good equipment for myself -- but for $229 I'd hope for something a little less "fun" and a little more "actually worth buying."

Samsung Digimax V700

Samsung Digimax V700 02/01/2005 09:09 PM

digimaxv700.jpg imageSamsung won't be satisfied until they've dipped a toe in every gadget pond, it seems. Their new Digimax V700 aims at this year's consumer camera target with a 7-megapixel sensor and 3x optical zoom for less than $500 (and probably far less than that soon after launch). Available in three colors, the V700 should be out as soon as 'now' (although I'd wait for a proper review before picking one up. Consumer cameras in this class can vary wildly in quality).

Creative MuVo Slim Vs. Samsung Yepp
YP-T5 Review
06/16/2004 08:34 AM

toms_slim_yepp.jpg imageTom's Hardware has an at-first off putting comparison review of the Creative MuVo Slim and Samsung's Yepp YP-T5 where they attempt to contrast the two oddly-shaped flash memory players, but mostly just end up with two separate reviews. Of the two, I definitely prefer the MuVo Slim. It may be twice as heavy and oddly shaped, but you have to admit there is a certain appeal to having 256MB of music stored in a form-factor that shares both the size and shape of a cassette tape. The fact that it uses USB 2.0 just takes it over the top.

At first look, the two megapixel camera with expandable memory definitely looks nice, but the expandable memory is in the unusual Transflash format. This phone does have a large 320x240 LCD display and most of the standard dosh that comes along with with a nice cellie including flash, Bluetooth, not to mention a flip out keypad.

AAC... hmmm... it's almost as if someone out there really likes iTunes. Maybe they'll add CONNECT and WMA support eventually, but probably not.
