How can Google grow?
06/15/2004 07:30 PMGoogle is supposed to be going public soon at some sort of
fantastically high valuation. A friend asked "How can they
possibly grow into that? What can they do besides search?"
If Google is to reach and sustain a Microsoft-style valuation
perhaps the best way for them to do this is by providing alternatives
to what Microsoft provides. Microsoft is the kind of desktop
applications. You buy software from a store and install it on
your machine. If a new version comes out you figure out how to
buy and install an upgrade. If you get a new computer you spend
several days reinstalling all of your applications, probably
buying new copies of the ones whose installation CD-ROMs you can't
find anymore. If you're traveling and need to edit a document or
spreadsheet, tough luck. All of your data is trapped on your
home or office computer.
In the Internet enthusiasm of the 1990s various people predicted
that desktop applications would be replaced by Web-based
applications For most users this has come true in the case of
email. If you're a Hotmail or Google Mail user you can read
email from any Internet-connected computer in the world. There
are a fair number of Internet-based photo sharing and database
services. What is then left on one's PC? Word processing,
spreadsheet, and PowerPoint documents. If Google were to offer a
private database service and a suite of reasonably powerful
application programs usable from a Web browser, this might be a
serious competitor to Microsoft Office.
So that's my prediction: while Microsoft is trying to replace
Google with MSN Search, Google will be trying to replace Microsoft
Office with Google Web-based Office.

with the robotics industry by recollecting his experiences with a
recent robotics trade show. Sadly, a lot of his points are completely
correct. The robotics industry appears to be mired in myopic, over-
schooled robotic geeks making piddly wall-detection robots that no one
wants nor can they sell. His solution? Simplify your robot and run a
cost-benefit analysis to see if it will sell. He says the Roomba
meets that cost-benefit criterion. Check out the article to find out
more about Lance's interesting observations.

Do you ever watch Inside the Actor's Studio with James Lipton on

they're actually better if they're rushed through.
I doubt I'll ever get a chance to have Mr. Lipton pose those questions

Enterprise Wi-Fi Market Set to Grow
11/14/2003 01:48 PM The Wi-Fi gear market grew 9 percent in the third quarter this year,
according to research from the Dell'Oro Group: The author of this
report concludes that the market is at a turning point where we may be
just about to see significant growth in the enterprise sector. The
market for access points for enterprise networks grew 25 percent in
the quarter. Until now, the small and home office market has primarily
driven growth, he said. I'm not sure we're quite on the cusp of seeing
major uptake in the large enterprise sector yet because I still see a
lot of confusion, given the wide variety of startups and products
available to address enterprise needs. That confusion will clear up
with market consolidation but that may not happen for a while. The
press release with some more details is here....

of students. Because Dartmouth has been on the leading edge of Wi-Fi,
it'll be interesting to watch the university as WiMax products begin
hitting the market. Stringing 1,500 APs sounds like a major pain while
WiMax would require far fewer base stations....

Farmers Grow Backsides with Wi-Fi
06/18/2004 03:58 PMWi-Fi networks on farms should allow farmers to control and monitor
more of their operations remotely: Trial projects attempt to show that
with farm-wide Wi-Fi coverage, that irrigation, packing, and other
parts of a farm's business could be handled through remote control.
Eventually, tractors and other devices might be run by wire (or by
wireless, as it were). Anthropomorphism abounds: runaway tractors are
a risk, but crazy runaway tractors? "What we're really scared of is
killing someone if it goes nuts," Pocknee said of the robotic
tractors. Likewise, this strange statement needs some explanation:
Pocknee can sit in his office and see the position of a 600-foot
irrigation system in a nearby field on his computer screen. The system
is equipped with a global positioning system to provide its location.
A wireless video camera shows how it is operating. Why first thought
is "why would an irrigation system move?" and then I realized these
are irrigation systems that are rolled over fields. Of course, this
kind of automation helps big agribusiness more than small farmers who
may be unable to afford the technology investment upfront on a scale
where it makes sense. Labor can be less expensive than technology, as
certain countries have taught us. I'd like to also see projects in
which open-source-flashed Linksys gateways are hooked together for a
few hundred dollars on a 100-acre farm than ever more multi-million
dollar research investments that let farms be run from hundreds of
miles away. [link via Robert Moskowitz]...

Tumors grow just like animals
Tumors grow just like animals
11/17/2003 05:46 AMThe same equations used to model animal growth also describe the
growth of tumors:
As an animal's mass increases, so does the number of cells within it.
But the blood supply that feeds those cells grows more slowly. As a
result, an increasing proportion of the available nutrients go towards
maintaining existing cells rather than the growth of new ones, so the
rate of growth slows and ultimately comes to a halt...
When they compared their predictions to the growth of 13 rodent or
human tumours, they found the tumours' growth closely followed the
same universal law.

04/06/2005 09:22 PMMan - today is turning into a day when I can connect many dots
together.
I just got to conote capitalism in it's pure state - with fascism.
The underlying notion of exploiting workers and resources to create
profit - is just sick to me. So when Jason Calacanis accused ME of
improperly gaming the system - the only thing I could think of was
"cause it's hurting you - you mean?"
Any money going directly into blogger's pockets is NOT going into
YOUR pocket. It's as almost as if he EXPECTS to make money - that it's
his right.
That just pisses me off to no ends.
Now I am going to answer Arnaudquestions about "why do I like structured
blogging" and "whether OPML can be adapted to support Any type
on MicroContent".
Well dude- the second question is teh easiest and funnest. We
did!
We used our OPML editor - weboutliner to
craete an editor for a birthday party activity. Pure situated
software.
It's a perfect paradigm. More on that later.
Next - I LOVE PubSub's
structured blogging effort cause it's just that - it's an effort.
When Seb Paquet first used the phrase - it blew my mind. I
knew right away that that was exactly what micro-content needed - was
a way to describe the controlled, form based kind of publishing that
will move us down the pyrimid and effect 80% of the population within
a few years.
Blogging is just the FIRST kind of micro-content and we're watching
lots of others get established - right in front of our eyes.
So structured blogging is the start of something I've been hoping
for - for a while now - a way to give normal end-users the power to
contribute, express themselves and share - little chunks of knowledge
- that are heavily "typed".
Kudos to Bob Wyman and the team at PubSub.
Arnaud admits that he doesn't write much about the format of the
published micro-content - but only a wholistic approach - which
combines open:
- APIs
- Schemas
- data format
- even user interfaces
......will get us to micro-content nirvana.
When I think about this stuff - I see EVDB, RVW supported in
blogware, an OpenListings format coming, OpenTopics and Technorati
tags - for all, FOAF, ourmedia, Media RSS - everywhere I go - I see
this stuff happening.
Just Yahoo buying Flickr, doing Media RSS and saying what they've
been saying and THEN having Google come back with THEIR video hosting
scenario. Man oh man.
It's all happening.

06/24/2005 07:35 PMDirecting queries through Internet search engines has become one of
the most popular online activities.
Statistics released from a new survey conducted by Harris Interactive
show that users accessed search engines more often than they used the
Net for entertainment, e-commerce or IM/chat. Over half of the
respondents (53%) said they used search engines most or every time
they went online, and only 4% said they had never used a search
engine. Only two activities were more popular than search: sending or
receiving e-mail (87%) and general Web surfing (55%).
How the respondents used search engines was also interesting. The top
reasons were for researching specific topics (88%), getting directions
or maps (75%), looking for news (64%) and shopping (51%). Internet
search engines also seem to be replacing the telephone for some tasks,
with a total of 54% reporting having used a search engine instead of
using a phone.
Different search engines seem to be better for searching for different
topics. For example, MSN and Ask Jeeves users were more apt to search
for medical and health information. Ask Jeeves users were also more
likely to look for maps and directions. Google users tended to search
more for news, perhaps a result of the Google News search page.
According to data from Nielsen//NetRatings, Google is by far the most
popular search engine in the US, with a 48% market share. Yahoo! is
next with 21%, followed by MSN with 12%, AOL with 5% and Ask Jeeves
with 2%. Google users are also the most loyal. Thirteen percent of US
adults who use Google use it exclusively, compared to 11% for AOL, 10%
for MSN, 7% for Yahoo!/Overture and 2.4% for Ask Jeeves.
