1,566-server supercomputer from Apple Computer, a real-world cousin to
an academic system that briefly appeared high on a list of the most
powerful machines, reports Stephen Shankland on CNET News.com.

supercomputer to Xserve G5s. “By moving to the thinner servers, the
supercomputer will consume less power and generate less heat, said

of engineering, at Virginia Tech. ‘It cuts the system’s size down by a
factor of three,’ Varadarajan said. ‘The new system will take much

U.S. Army. It will be powered by 1,566 dual-processor Apple Xserve
servers and have a peak performance capability of 25 Teraflops per
second. It is expected to be the second most powerful in the world.
The U.S. Army plans to use it for modelling the aerodynamics of
hypersonic flight and will cost around $5.8mn. They plan to finish it
