Gay marriage compared to box-turtle
marriage in Senate, Daily Show replies
07/19/2004 02:52 AM
In a fit of astonishing lunacy, Texas Senator John Cornyn tried to
explain the need to ban gay marriage in the context of the social harm
that would accrue from allowing men to marry box turtles ("It does not
affect your daily life very much if your neighbor marries a box
turtle, but that does not mean it is right...Now you must raise you
children up in a world where that union of man and box turtle is on
the same legal footing as man and wife"). Jon Stewart's Daily Show
segment on this statement is nothing short of brilliant. Let's hope it
gets enough airplay to cost Cornyn the election (and possibly get him
institutionalized somewhere...).

Abe wants to revise Constitution to use SDF in hostage crisis
Monday, April 12, 2004 at 06:47 JST
TOKYO — Shinzo Abe, secretary general of the ruling Liberal
Democratic Party, called Sunday for amending the Constitution to
enable the government to mobilize the Self-Defense Forces in such
eventualities as the current hostage crisis in
Iraq.
Obviously the US doesn't have a monopoly on using
tragedies and fear to push their political agenda. I personally am not
against revising the constitution and I can see how it makes
"political sense" to do it now, but it still bugs me. People make such
stupid laws when they're emotional.

show the 490 B.C. battle occurred not on the long accepted date of
September 12, but a full month earlier, researchers
said….According [to]the Greek historian Herodotus, Plutarch and

Distributed computing helps revise
climate change models...
02/01/2005 08:53 PMClimate change is still a contentious issue in some parts of the
world. Despite widespread acceptance in the scientific community and
by the general public in most of the industrialized world, it remains
a divisive topic in the United States, rejected by conservative
politicians armed with studies from industry-funded think-tanks and a
healthy dose of congnitive dissonance.
This week's Science.Ars looks at the results of a distributed
computing project focused on climate change modeling. In addition,
we've got news of the sex life of the Hawaiian Cricket, stem cell
contamination, and more.

FCC vs. The fifth amendment
FCC vs. The fifth amendment
07/08/2004 03:41 PM
FCC wants radio, TV to keep tapes of shows.
Presumably this is to make it easier for the FCC's
Enforcement Bureau to levy some of
those
hefty new fines. Now I know the issue of the FCC fines and the FCC
in general has already been discussed
here, here, here, and possibly
here. But it seems
like there's
a
fifth amendment issue here that's new to this debate. Will forcing
broadcasters to keep tapes in effect compel them to give evidence
against themselves?
