07/21/2004 04:20 PMSome of us have had the misfortune of a hard-drive failure. It will
happen to everyone eventually, and hopefully it will not be a painful
death. I have been lucky as I have a aggressive backup plan in place
others have been devastated by total loss of years of information. So
it is not surprising that the hunt for technology to replace
hard-drives are heating up. But I will bet that the ever popular
hard-drive will be around for a very long time. [ZDNet]

also told attendees that the "productivity area is probably the most

Even better is the Action Film

HTTP and HTML: Obsolete or Timeless?
HTTP and HTML: Obsolete or Timeless?
12/24/2004 12:57 PMForgive me for stating the obvious, but I got to thinking today
about the major protocol and language that drive the Web — HTTP
and HTML — and I reflected on the fact that this pair is
essentially frozen in time.
There hasn't been a major update to either of these specs in five
years. The recommendation for HTML 4.01 was released on December 24, 1999. HTTP 1.1 is
even older — it's been a standard since 1997. On the W3C's HTTP page, the last
entry in "News, Updates, and Events" is from 1998.
HTML has had the benefit of CSS since then, and that's really where
all the progress is. CSS 2.1 is a recommendation as of February 25, 2004, and CSS3 is in working
draft mode. Still, very little has happened on the core HTML language.
XHTML 1.0 is
even four years old now.
HTTP has had WebDav since
1999, but there hasn't even been an RFC with "http" in the title for
over two years (RFC 3310).
So, my question is: is this lack of activity evidence of (1) an
obsolete protocol and language that is hampering the utility of the
Internet, or (2) a rock-solid protocol and language that has been
robust enough to get us where we are now with few changes?
I have no answer, just the question.

04/07/2005 01:25 PMI always feel a bit stupid when I purchase a movie on DVD. With
networks getting faster and hard drives & flash memory prices
dropping, it's only a matter of time until a gigantic catalog of
movies is available online or on USB keys sent back and forth in the
mail like Netflix rentals. Things are moving in this direction
already: Sony wants to create an online movie service like the iTunes
Music Store and a huge amount of movies are already available online
on Usenet, BitTorrent, and various P2P networks. The upshot is that
all those movies I have -- because the technology companies and the
media companies are making it so I can't make copies of my movies to
move them from the DVDs to whatever the hell device I'm going to play
my movies on in the future -- I'm going to end up purchasing them all
again (or worse, renting them each time I want to watch them...movie
and music ownership may soon be a thing of the past if the media
companies have anything to say about it). Which is great if you're a
big media company but makes me, like I said before, feel a bit stupid
when buying DVDs.

Is The New York Times The Paper Of An
Obsolete Record?
Is The New York Times The Paper Of An
Obsolete Record?
07/14/2004 06:35 AMWe've discussed many times how newspapers simply don't get the
internet, and Adam Penenberg is suggesting that there may be no
greater example than the NY Times. The Times, of course, was one of
the first online newspapers to require online registration and set up
a paid archive for articles after a short period of free time online.
However, because of that, the
New York
Times results barely appear at all in Google. If they're striving
to be "the paper of record" then they need to be where people are
looking -- and these days, people are looking in Google. Penenberg
notes that despite the fact that the Times makes very little money off
of those archives, they won't open them, because it might endanger
their $20 million per year deal with Lexis-Nexis. Talk about getting
hung up by legacy systems. Either way, it's a good point that the
folks at the NY Times (and other newspapers) need to realize. Being
online means being accessible. If you're not, then today's surfers
aren't going to care. You may believe you can hang onto a small group
and sell their demographic data to advertisers, but the
data is
dirty and the times are changing. People don't want to jump
through hoops when there's a lot of other content out there, and if
the command line of the internet is a search engine, these sites that
block themselves off are simply making themselves obsolete.

Inc., an international distributor of printer products. The system
allows users of many inkjet printers to convert their printers, in
about five minutes, to a system that connects the ink cartridges to
ink bottles that sit outside the printer. The user just keeps the ink
bottles filled and never again needs to replace an ink cartridge.
