04/16/2005 08:03 AMI've found
a good use for my iPod - I listen to podcasts on the way to
work. Yesterday, I found this gem:
The keynote
of SXSW conference by Malcolm Gladwell. (MP3 download and stream
available.)
He talks about snap judgements, and how good we are convincing
ourselves that we are making a rational decision, even when we're not.
I've always believed that intuition is a skill that can be trained -
but I didn't know humans were that dependent on it...
Highly, highly recommended.

I enjoy work. Like the narrator of
"Three Men in a Boat," I can sit and watch it for hours.
Whenever I have something that needs to be done, I work hard to find a
way to put it off. Nothing, I have found, facilitates this job like
fixing photos. It's easy and rewarding. It helps me to procrastinate
for hours.

The deep thought for the day came to me in the grocery where I
noticed a new kind of cereal: Are Multigrain Rice
Krispies© still Rice Krispies©? Shouldn't they be Multigrain
Krispies© or something Krispies© instead? What about Rice,
Oat and Maize Krispies©? Maybe Pro-Biotic Krispies© for the
middle-aged yuppies? When they started with Corn Chex©, they
franchised into multiple flavours but never Multigrain Corn
Chex©, rather Multigrain Chex©. I am perplexed. I did notice
that the same cereal is being marketed in the UK as Rice
Krispies© Muddles which come with a pro- and pre-biotic bio-bonus
payload! Sounds more like a biology lab experiment than a breakfast
cereal served in sugar with a little milk.
I am also frightened by the disturbing rumour that Oliver Stone is
thinking about making an epic fanfic movie that will make every
Thatcherite pre-order the DVD for enjoying it in private with a jar of
vaseline and tissues. He is supposedly thinking about Meryl Streep for
the lead probably because every other self-respecting actress in the
UK would laugh at the very idea of it.
And, Scene from My
Life, nee A Day in the Life, has finally returned after a long
hiatus with a photographer in Paris whose photoblog I follow
regularly.
Seven more days until we get the puppy. :)

04/28/2004 01:14 PMSo a friend of mine who I completely love is - well - he's not
really at the cutting-edge of what's happening online. He normally
chucks me links that have been around the web a couple of times in the
previous few weeks. I'm not particularly well connected these days, to
be honest, so sometimes they're a discovery for me too. Today,
however, he has excelled himself by sending me an awed link to (wait
for it) All
your base are belong to us! I'm trying not to mock him, but it's
so so very hard to resist. Nnngh. Nngh! Must resist
temptation!
I hear what you're thinking and yes yes - I too was startled by his
hideous lapse into the clunky humour of 2001, but I guess we should be
more forgiving - he works in the film/tv industry after all and it's
not like they're particualrly down with the kids. Also they probably
have way more important things to do during the day than look at funny
flash movies and bitch about Microsoft products. Still, as a result of
this discussion I have decided that the world needs a new scale upon
which to measure how quickly an individual hears about big memes. We
need a Beaufort/Richter scale for memetic clue. I am calling it the
RHINE system (based directly on the river in
Europe) and using the clunky old metaphor of the memestream (that
also probably reached its height in the musty nostalgia of 2001).
Essentially, the longer it takes you to hear about rilly cool things
on the interweb, the further downstream you are considered to be -
with all the commensurate anxieties about who has peed in your
drinking water that involves. The novel factor in the scale is that
your relative position can be identified with key cities along the
Rhine! What fun! Which means, dear old close friend (Kerry), that if
the memestream were the Rhine you would live in bloody Rotterdam. I'm
more of a Cologne man, myself...
Panasonic D-Snap SV-AS30, SV-AS3
Panasonic D-Snap SV-AS30, SV-AS3
09/21/2004 10:38 AM
Panasonic has two new cameras out in their D-Snap
line, the SV-AS30 [left] and the SV-AS3. Both are thin-profile
3.2-megapixel cameras that can not only record MPEG4 video, but can
also play it back from SD cards, as well as MP3s or WMAs (maybe only
the SV-AS3 can do the music playback, I'm not positive). In addition,
the cameras have a 16:9 image mode for shooting photos that will later
be viewed on HDTV screens (1920 x 1080).
The upright form factor is probably my least favorite camera design
there is, but they do look nice an pocketable, so there's that.
