Vapourised vodka inhalers come to NYC
clubs
08/22/2004 07:30 AM
Cory Doctorow: Alcohol Without Liquid (AWoL) is the trade-name for a vapourised vodka product that's dispensed through a portable booze-bong that has become trendy in London clubs. Now NYC meatpacking district clubs have taken up the craze and are selling booze-inhalers to their customers.
AWoL users pour a shot of their favorite spirit into a diffuser capsule, which is connected to an oxygen pipe.

Oxygen bubbles are pumped through it, absorbing the alcohol and creating a smoky-looking vapor, which is then sucked through a tube and inhaled.

Strange bedfellows, indeed (Metafilter 21918). Whassup? Trotskyite ghosts prowl the the White House amidst a power struggle of historic proportions.

Kalashnikov: US gov't is pirating my
AK-47 design
07/26/2004 07:23 AM
The US government is an enthusiastic supporter of pirate manufacturers of Kalashnikov AK-47 rifles, and Kalashnikov himself is pissed off that he's not receiving royalties from all these American-bought bootleg firearms.
Since the collapses of the Taliban in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein's army in Iraq, the United States has been purchasing or arranging the transfer of thousands of knockoffs of Kalashnikovs commonly referred to as AK-47's, to outfit new military and security forces in Kabul and Baghdad.

These rifles have not been made in Russia, where the arms industry holds patents for the weapon in several nations. Instead they have originated in weapons plants controlled by Eastern European states, each of which was a partner of Moscow's in Soviet days.

Keep tipping those bottles, it still
works

Keep tipping those bottles, it still
works
02/05/2005 09:07 PM
About this time last year, MacMerc worked its way into the soft drink hall of fame... Or Pepsi's hit list, but I really prefer to think of it as the hall of fame. Anyway, we let the world know that instead of buying just any iTunes Pepsi (and hoping for a winning bottle), a simple twist of the wrist and a watchful eye could reveal if a bottle had music in its future. We received many media accolades over the piece, but also buckets of hate mail, which just goes to show how seriously some people take this stuff. So why am I using this space to tell you a year old story? The trick works for the new contest.

Tilt. Win. Repeat.

I was able to find some of the bottles for the new contest today and I'm happy to report that tipping the bottles still works. It appears a little more difficult (though I could just be imagining this, I would need to secure a bottle of year old suds to confirm), but it is indeed possible. Most caps have a little interior ridge, though I don't see how this obscures the view. Overall it seems the caps are shorter. But again, this could be complete poppycock.

You can find photos of both winning and losing caps on Flickr.

Still need the trick? You can check out our original report for full directions and a lengthy commentary--no need to try to piece it together from poor copy cats.

Are reusable water bottles dangerous?

Are reusable water bottles dangerous? 04/05/2005 11:29 AM
David Pescovitz: At The F Blog, former BB guestblogger Jenn Shreve writes about her quest to find an environmentally-reasonable yet non-toxic portable (and potable) water container:
Being the green gal that I am, but not wishing to sacrifice my own health for the planet (sorry, earth, just being honest), I decided just to re-use the flimsy plastic water bottles for as long as I could. I was happy with this solution for quite some time, until I learned the horrible truth: HARMFUL BACTERIA! Yes, with each refreshing sip I was backwashing germs into my water and providing them with a warm, wet place to grow.

So I did what any bacteria-fearing primate would do and bought a nice, reusable Nalgene bottle. Boy oh boy, nothing makes you look or feel more like a tree-hugging, mushroom hunting nature girl than one of those bright, hard plastic bottles! Until it comes out that Nalgene gives you BRAIN DAMAGE! Yes, Bisphenol A, used to make Nalgene bottles and other hard plastic projects, apparently seeps into the body and can, in certain doses, mess with the function of the brain. (I’m paraphrasing/exaggerating and not everybody agrees, so look it up.) I could almost dismiss the fear as environmentalist fear mongering, but it turns out that California legislators take the threat seriously enough to consider banning it in children’s products.

Divers in the English Channel have discovered the 50-year-old wreck of a French cargo ship with 20,000 half-bottles of (slightly flat) champagne in the hold.
Divers from the Folkestone Diving Club and other south-east clubs, who remain tight-lipped about exactly where and when they found the champagne, dug out bottles to bring back to dry land and cracked them open with friends and family at dinner parties.
