DataMax Systems Solutions, a leader in the retail technology industry, recently won a bid to purchase the displaced "Point of Sale" equipment from 1,260 Eckerd's stores. 130 tractor-trailers full of payment terminals, scanners, and printers became available as a result of CVS/pharmacy's acquisition of Eckerd. DataMax's purchase of this perfectly functional POS hardware, and its ability to recondition and customize the equipment to buyer's specs, represents a great opportunity for DataMax's customers. A New Online Community in Hong Kong

    A New Online Community in Hong Kong 12/19/2004 03:18 PM
    As you may know, I teach each fall at the University of Hong Kong's Journalism & Media Studies Centre, helping out with a new media course led by Andrew Lih, a professor there. The student project this year is especially interesting, I think. Here's the text of a release being sent out to various folks.
    Chatter Garden, an online community for news and discussion about Hong Kong regional politics and public affairs, is now live. The English language site was created as a University of Hong Kong student project for the New Media Workshop, part of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre. Visitors are encouraged to engage in online community dialogue, writing weblog entries and moderating stories. The Web site creation was directed by assistant professor Andrew Lih and visiting lecturer Dan Gillmor, author of the book, "We the Media." While Hong Kong has one of the most free media environments in East Asia and China, there are surprisingly few forums for public discourse. Chatter Garden was inspired by other online citizen journalism projects, such as OhmyNews (Korea), Malaysiakini and DailyKOS (US) to engage citizens in discussing regional public affairs. Topics include politics, economy, culture, and "One country, Two systems." Chatter Garden is named after "Chater Garden," the park next to the government Legislative Council building, and a popular gathering place for local political rallies.
    I'm proud of the students' work, and hope you'll check out the site.

    Hong Kong's Threatened Speech

    Hong Kong's Threatened Speech 06/03/2004 12:13 PM

    The Chinese authorities are mocking their promises of "one country, two systems," a promise they made when they got Hong Kong back from the British in 1997. As William Woo notes in this opinion piece today, four prominent talk show hots have gone off the air. Woo writes:

    For the social, economic and political elites of Hong Kong, Albert Cheng's show may not have been required listening. But for them press freedom is important. One by one, the canaries in the coal mine are going silent. On this anniversary of Tiananmen Square, Hong Kong deludes itself if it imagines that it need not be concerned.
    The concern there is real. I recently had an email from a friend I met while teaching in Hong Kong each fall for the past five years. He is a proud citizen of China and Hong Kong, and thought the Beijing government had meant what it said in the handover. He now fears the worst may occur. I hope China's rulers won't be that stupid. They have the power to do this. But they do not have anything like the moral authority. As they loosen their socialist economic grip on the mainland, they inevitably will have to allow genuine self-rule to emerge. Breaking promises but making Hong Kong a non-free city will not help China, but it could wreck Hong Kong, and show the world that Beijing's words are as hollow as its critics have said all along. This is a test for China. Right now, it's failing.

    High Growth Expected for Safety PLCs &
    Safety Bus/Networks
    04/14/2005 04:00 AM
    There are concerns about the reliability and safety in the use of safety buses/networks for machine automatic safeguarding, particularly when safety and non-safety data is handled by the same bus/network. Nevertheless usage is expected to grow significantly over the forecast period, as the use of safety PLCs grows and reliability of operations with safety buses/networks becomes proven. Usage is particularly attractive when machines and controls become more complex (i.e., for example, requiring many emergency stops and/or safety gate switches with multiple actuators). Safety of a different kind

    Safety of a different kind 04/09/2004 05:30 PM

    Speaking of safety, here is a gadget that offers safety of a more enjoyable kind for callous geeks like me looking for a good place to rest our wrists (via Gizmodo) .

    They should offer versions for those who prefer to rest their wrist on a male chest.  I'll provide a mold of my chest for a reasonable fee.  While my chest is not as good looking as Brad Pitts', I think I have more professional looking nipples.  Besides, I am in ternationally respected where Brad is only internationally ogled.

    Design quality-wise, I give the left one a B but the right one gets a C because the gel bumps are not symmetric.  More advanced design could allow a picture to be 'slipped-in' like those promotional mousepads and control buttons to inflate the gel bumps.  BTW, I see no obvious security vulnerabilities in these products.

    I am not sure if this particular long term solution to cross-site scripting (XSS) has been discussed yet, but I thought it is worth a mention since I thought of it.  Yes, I have an ego that wants to be polished daily. :-)

    The idea is to introduce 'safety' attributes to HTML and XHTML that allows web developers to disable dangerous DHTML features like scripting within elements that contains content from users.  For example:

    <div class='.comment' safety='noscript,nostyle'>
    comment entered by visitors
    </div>

    Fine-grained safety settings will allow some scripting features to continue working while disabling others.

    NYC Plans Giant Safety Net 06/18/2004 11:54 PM
    Computerworld reports that New York City will build a wireless network to supports 10,000s of public-safety users at speeds of up 70 mph: Bids are expected next month. They'll start with a three-month pilot project to test with multiple bidders, and then award a five-year contract with the potential for two five-year renewals. The bid's spec apparently calls for two Mbps access and simultaneous streaming for 1,000s of users. The first phase would support about 5,000 fire, police, and emergency medical personnel. The full cost could be $500 million to $1 billion, but the city won't confirm it. Mesh architecture is practically a necessity, the article quotes experts as saying. Tropos says they could deploy such a network with 600 of their access points in the 2.4 GHz band. More would be needed to use the 4.9 GHz public-safety band. Lucent suggests that EvDo running at 2.4 Mbps in the 1.9 GHz band would be an option as well....
