Mobile and I
"A new generation of mobile users are becoming so emotionally
attached to their phones that they cannot live without them.
This is one of the key findings of a study into how people use
their mobile phones entitled Me, My Mobile and I.
The annual study from research firm Teleconomy reveals that 10 to
14-year-olds - dubbed M-Agers - are rapidly becoming the most
sophisticated users of phones.
Even toddlers are able to tell the difference between incoming
phone calls and text messages said Professor Michael Hulme, chairman
of Teleconomy....
'They are growing up ready to take on these services,' said Prof
Hulme....
Phones are rapidly replacing address books, diaries, watches and
alarm clocks as people turn increasingly to their handsets to help
manage their lives." [BBC News,
via textuall
y.org]
An admittedly small study group, but the findings are well
supported elsewhere. The two killer statistics, though - and the ones
to which libraries need to pay particular attention - are that
"32% see phone as tool rather than intimate object"
and "85% of children had personalised phones."
It's not like these things are going away, you know.

Edmonton today; Yellowknife tomorrow
Edmonton today; Yellowknife tomorrow
06/22/2005 02:22 AMQuick trip update for friends and family... The trip to
Edmonton was uneventful except for some strong headwinds in flight
(almost 40 knots) and gusty surface winds (20 knots gusting 25 was
typical for most of the landings from Winnipeg and onward). Jeff
Foster, the Cirrus authorized service guy here in Edmonton, turned out
to be quite the craftsman like a lot of aviation mechanics. The
plane seems to be holding up very nicely after 60 hours on the
clock.
The weather forecast for the next couple of days is pretty good so
Alex and I should be able to make it to Yellowknife and Inuvik as
planned. I booked the last dog-friendly room in Yellowknife a
few hours ago and if we can't find one in Inuvik we'll just pitch the
tent next to the airplane and eat granola bars (if living out of one's
car is a badge of honorable poverty among singer/songwriters what can
one say about living out of an airplane?).
Nearly everyone in Canada has asked about Alex. Aside from
the dog-curiosity the main difference between a Canadian city and a
U.S. city seems to be that the Canadians have groups of working-age
men hanging around downtown. Unlike the U.S. the Canadians have
a welfare system for men of working age and furthermore that
welfare system has no time limits. So a lot of guys choose to
let others pick up the slack while they hang with their buddies and
drink beer.
Aviation here is fairly similar to the U.S. but slightly less
formal and much less busy. One can listen to an MP3 track all
the way through on a Center frequency before being interrupted by a
radio call from an airliner checking in. At the aviation
museum here in Edmonton one of the guides talked about how crazy busy
the Edmonton airport was during WWII when they were doing training
here and also ferrying 8000 planes over to the Russians. "We had
850 operations [takeoffs and landings] one day during the peak!" he
noted. For comparison Logan airport in Boston has 2000
operations per day and Teterboro, NJ, a NYC-area airport for private
planes, has nearly 600 per day.
I will be spending the rest of the night spraying permethrin into
my clothing to repel the mosquitoes and other nasty bugs up there in
the NWT.

Tough on Terror, or Tough on Liberty?
Tough on Terror, or Tough on Liberty?
12/12/2003 10:06 PMReports, including this one from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, on
a study on the prevalence of terror-related crime hit the wire
services several days ago but have received relatively little
attention in broad circles. The new study, done by the TRAC research
center at Syracuse University, shows that federal investigators have
recommended the prosecution of an estimated 6,400 people on terrorism
charges since September 11, 2001. Out of 6,400 cases, just 879 have
been convicted. Of these, 184 have been convicted of "international
terrorism" and the remainder for related charges. Overall, only 123
received significant sentences (over one year in prison) and only 23
were sentenced to five years or more. Also, convictions for
"international terrorism" had a median duration of just 14 days,
indicating that the vast majority of these convictions were for very
minor crimes. The linked story quotes Charles Pena, director of a
libertarian group. "It bothers me that we would round up whole
bunches of people without an idea about whether they really are a
terrorist . . . It certainly is valid to ask whether the whole war on
terror is successful."

Good, VCs Get Tough
Times Were Bad, VCs Get Tough; Times Are
Good, VCs Get Tough
05/20/2004 01:05 PMAfter the bubble popped, many VCs practically stopped all investing.
In the cases where they did invest, they often put in
incre
dibly onerous terms that gave the VCs a lot more power than they
might have deserved (though, some VCs will disagree with this). Of
course, now that times are getting better, people are saying that
VCs are
tightening terms again - so as not to get burned. What
this really means is that many VCs are looking for any reason to make
the terms more in their favor. Times are bad? Terms need to be
tighter. Times are good? Terms need to be tighter to make sure they
don't go bad again. The obvious response, of course, is that it
is the VC's job to get good terms - but if those terms cause
more problems, it's a strategic mistake. If entrepreneurs feel that
their VCs are ripping them off, it defeats much of the purpose of
getting that VC money in the first place. Besides, as the startup
market picks up again (as it's doing) this becomes less of an issue.
Already, we hear stories about VCs offering ridiculous valuations to
companies because they're in a "hot" space. When competition for the
hot startups increases, VCs are suddenly willing to make the terms a
bit more reasonable.

Weak Defense...But Getting Better
Weak Defense...But Getting Better
12/18/2003 03:40 PMWorried about your wireless network's default security? You should be.
Wireless networks send their data in the clear through walls and
ceilings, and can be picked up with sensitive antennas -- much more
sensitive than the ones your equipment uses -- miles away. With this
kind of transparency, you need to protect the data on your network,
even if you're a casual home user. The only tool for consumers and
small businesses until mid-2003 was the built-in WEP (Wired Equivalent
Privacy) encryption that's required as part of the Wi-Fi certification
program. But security experts have shown numerous flaws in WEP that
prevent it from providing even a minimal reliable level of security
for serious applications. Businesses had a strapped-together system
they could use called 802.1X/EAP, but standardization for securing it
(a separate problem), missing clients in older machines, back-end
server requirements, and its reliance on WEP all prevented widespread
adoption. Fortunately, in November 2002, the Wi-Fi Alliance, a group
trade that certifies 802.11a, b, and g devices as interoperable,
released an interim replacement for WEP and other aspects of Wi-Fi
security that will change the landscape. This new standard is called
WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access). WEP's Weakness WEP's initial goal was to
provide a level of security that conformed to the difficulty of
tapping Ethernet network traffic. In the case of wired Ethernet, you
would need physical access to a network to sniff packets and intercept
data. WEP's minimal security should have met at least that level of
protection. Unfortunately, WEP failed because of flaws in the
conception and implementation of the protocol. Some of these flaws
were a result of computational limits when the specification was being
developed: the number crunching expected to be available on the Wi-Fi
cards was orders of magnitudes lower than that available even in 1999.
Other flaws had to do with then-current export restrictions on strong
encryption, which limited one flavor of WEP to just 40 bits. Several
articles appeared on Aug. 4, 2001, about an academic paper authored by
notable encryption and security experts which that explained how
insufficient randomness and insufficient key space meant that a
cracker could sniff relatively few packets to crack a WEP key -- just
a few million packets of data at most (or a few tens of thousands at
least) using software that showed up a few days after the paper was
released. The paper and subsequent...
