ISA 2004 Leaves The Gate 07/14/2004 01:44 AM

Tuesday, during their Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft announced general availability of Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server 2004. After many months of development in the skunk works at Redmond, Microsoft has drastically overhauled the server's architecture to circumvent worms and other Internet attacks.

The Last Leaves of 2004

The Last Leaves of 2004 12/17/2004 06:37 PM
Back in September of last year, I wrote: “There’s a visual effect that I’ve only seen here in rainy green B.C. and has so far eluded all my cameras. It works like this: On a grey day, as dusk gathers, something you’d think would be unremarkable, like a fern against old wood, or these autumnpearleaves, can make you look twice or three times, colour reaching deep into your machineries of vision. I think it’s of the mind rather than the eyes, but haven’t abandoned hope for lucky light on a dark day with camera in hand.” This one gets halfway there...

Cryptonomicon Gate

« Cryptonomicon gate on Fredrikinkatu. I called it this after I remembered that I had seen similar symbols in Stepheson's Baroque Cycle which were from John Wilkins' Philosophical Language. »

It was a long, long weekend in spite of not much drinking or partying, but included an unexpected houseguest from the US and I'm still trying to recover. I used to be young and spontaneous and now I'm just old and cranky when the rituals that get me through the day are disturbed. In an attempt to be hostess to the houseguest who travelled 4,000 miles where others failed, I finally managed to see the somewhat legendary expat junk food store in the lower level of Kmp Galleria and I am now convinced that I am, in fact, in the wrong line of work judging by the prices. I should open a shop called "Pimp My Crack" in Hakaniemi filled with crap from the US and the UK or maybe a Krispy Kreme store. The first one is always free...

For Whom the Gate Tolls? How and Why to Free the Refereed Research Literature Online Through Author/Institution Self-Archiving, Now
http://www .ecs.soton.ac.uk/~harnad/Tp/resolution.htm

ABSTRACT:
All refereed journals will soon be available online; most of them already are. This means that anyone will be able to access them from any networked desk-top. The literature will all be interconnected by citation, author, and keyword/subject links, allowing for unheard-of power and ease of access and navigability. Successive drafts of pre-refereeing preprints will be linked to the official refereed draft, as well as to any subsequent corrections, revisions, updates, comments, responses, and underlying empirical databases, all enhancing the self-correctiveness, interactivity and productivity of scholarly and scientific research and communication in remarkable new ways. New scientometric indicators of digital impact are also emerging (http://opcit.eprints.org) to chart the online course of knowledge. But there is still one last frontier to cross before science reaches the optimal and the inevitable: Just as there is no longer any need for research or researchers to be constrained by the access-blocking restrictions of paper distribution, there is no longer any need to be constrained by the impact-blocking financial fire-walls of Subscription/Site-License/Pay-Per-View (S/L/P) tolls for this give-away literature. Its author/researchers have always donated their research reports for free (and its referee/researchers have refereed for free), with the sole goal of maximizing their impact on subsequent research (by accessing the eyes and minds of fellow-researchers, present and future) and hence on society. Generic (OAi-compliant) software is now available free so that institutions can immediately create Eprint Archives in which their authors can self-archive all their refereed papers for free for all forever (http://www.eprints.org/). These interoperable Open Archives (http://www.openarchives.org) will then be harvested into global, jointly searchable "virtual archives" (e.g., http://arc.cs.odu.edu/). "Scholarly Skywriting" in this PostGutenberg Galaxy will be dramatically (and measurably) more interactive and productive, spawning its own new digital metrics of productivity and impact, allowing for an online "embryology of knowledge." This will be added to Academic Resources 2004-05 Internet MiniGuide.

Never trust gate agents...

Never trust gate agents... 01/26/2004 12:43 PM

I remember learning this lesson in the past. NEVER TRUST GATE AGENTS. My Lufthansa flight from Zurich to Munich was over an hour delayed. My transfer was very short and I thought I would miss my flight so I asked them to route me through Frankfurt. They told me all flights out of Munich were late and I would be OK. We arrived in Munich and we walked off the plane and were told to walk up an escalator going the wrong direction. Then at the top of the escalator, the door was locked and we had a pile-up. I heard cussing in a variety of languages. It was funny. We got out and all of the displays for connecting flights were blank.

I went to the gate, and of course the flight had left. I went to the service counter and I got the "are you stupid?" look and was told that I should take the next flight to Frankfurt.

Anyway, I better go board my next flight on my Lufthansa hub-a-thon...

Chicago's Cloud Gate

Chicago's Cloud Gate 08/02/2004 10:33 AM
beanCloud Gate is Anish Kapoor's recently unveiled artwork in Chicago's Millennium Park. The surreal sculpture has caused quite a stir and the media are pissing off Kapoor by nicknaming it "The Bean." Former BB guestblogger Jenn Shreve sent along links to architectural writer Lynn Becker's photo essay of The Bean Cloud Gate under construction, an image gallery of the completed work, and a Webcam site. Jenn says:
"Cloud Gate combines the blobular, organic shapes that have been so prevalent in recent design with the reflective surfaces common to Gehry's architectural work and turns the idea of sculpture  as something to be *looked at* on its ear, transforming the very looking into an experiential, interactive encounter--all within the public sphere. Plus it looks like an alien just layed a mega egg in the middle of the city, which you gotta love."

Open Source For Corporations: Set Up A
$30,000 Gate

Open Source For Corporations: Set Up A
$30,000 Gate
04/12/2004 02:10 PM
While many in the tech industry always seem focused too much on companies that produce technology, there isn't as much interest in how everyday companies use technology to improve their own bottom line. There's a new "co-op" targeted at large companies that use technology as a way to improve their business, but who are sick of spending so much time and money on customized software for their business. Think of it as open source software with a $30,000 gate. Members of the co-op pay $30,000 per year to join, and then can freely share software they've built with others in the co-op. The benefits, in theory, are access to the other software from other companies, and the fact that some others within the co-op will contribute to and improve on software that's been donated. Of course, companies could just open source this software (since it's obviously focused on software that isn't designed to give the companies a competitive advantage). However, it seems like they figure that the $30,000 gate will keep the level of the software included higher and more focused on corporate uses. Also, it's much more likely that companies will be willing to spend their own engineering resources on applications that go into this program than on fully open source projects - since many managers still have a fear of open source. The article suggests that this could be disruptive to companies that design custom applications for corporate users. There is still a question of seeding the field with enough applications, but it sounds like they've already convinced some large companies (like Best Buy) to join and toss some of their corporate software into the pot.

Tsunami account from Burning Man gate

Tsunami account from Burning Man gate
manager
12/30/2004 07:20 PM
Xeni Jardin: More than 115,000 are dead. Pearl, a gate manager for Burning Man, was in Thailand when the tsunami hit -- he survived.
This is Pearl. I am currently in Bangkok waiting for a flight I have cajoled my way onto. I am one of the survivors. With only scratches, briuses and infections I am fine. Everything I own (almost - a small plastic jesus doll made it through!) is gone. My house was wiped out, as were 3000 hotel rooms, around 600 other resident/vacation homes and almost all the business' in the area.

Our house was 150 feet from the beach, that is THE hardest hit beach in Thailand. As water rushed into our house and then ripped open the second story wall, I leapt off our second story roof and swam and swam and swam, riding the wave deep into the jungle, as it destroyed building after building, ripping up trees and spinning diesel trucks into the air. All this with me in the center of it clinging to anything that floats and swimming to avoid the standing buildings or trees that crushed and impaled many others. The wave deposited me, a small swedish girl and a 60 foot poilice cruiser (medium sized steel patrol boat - around 20 tons) 1 kilometer from the beach - in the jungle.

For the next 5 hours i set up a triage center and cared for dead and dying foreigners. Finally we got helicopters in, and I made my way back towards the main town. I found Karin (my girlfriend) and collapsed. We had both assumed each other dead as the destruction was so massive. She had climbed a coconut tree, wrapped her arms and legs and held on. The water kept pullng the tree and her under, but it and she survived. That day I saw around 100 bodies. The next day, another 200, and the day we left there were cattle trucks full of rotting corpses being taken to Phuket.

After days of no news, dwindling food and water - a group of divers virtually kidnapped a driver to take us away. Every few hours someone had created a rumor that another wave was coming, or there was a gas explosion, or the Muslim rebels were attacking. None were true, but it caused massive panic and killed many more people. We were already under massive psychological strain, and this just made it insane. We ran.

My town is gone. There are probably 2% of the original buildings in a recognizable form. I am very lucky to even be making my way home. The U.S. goverment offered me a phone call, a toothbrush, a paperback book and a temporary passport. No hotel, no food, no flight home. I was told that I could take out a loan if I could list three people who would vouch for me at home. The process would only take a few days. I was alone, injured (superficially - but I sure did look bad), no possesions, no money and my government offered my a book.

I don't know who or what to acknowledge for my presence. That will take a lot of soul-searching. I am certainly among the luckiest people in Thailand right now. According to local news it looks like my town had a SURVIVAL rate of 60%. Please think of what you value. Look around, have you given a hug to someone recently? Anyone? If everything you had were taken away, who would you turn too? In the end it is each other, not the things, that make the world spin. I won't ever forget that.
