Gay marriage compared to box-turtle
marriage in Senate, Daily Show replies
07/19/2004 02:52 AM
In a fit of astonishing lunacy, Texas Senator John Cornyn tried to
explain the need to ban gay marriage in the context of the social harm
that would accrue from allowing men to marry box turtles ("It does not
affect your daily life very much if your neighbor marries a box
turtle, but that does not mean it is right...Now you must raise you
children up in a world where that union of man and box turtle is on
the same legal footing as man and wife"). Jon Stewart's Daily Show
segment on this statement is nothing short of brilliant. Let's hope it
gets enough airplay to cost Cornyn the election (and possibly get him
institutionalized somewhere...).

FCC vs. The fifth amendment
FCC vs. The fifth amendment
07/08/2004 03:41 PM
FCC wants radio, TV to keep tapes of shows.
Presumably this is to make it easier for the FCC's
Enforcement Bureau to levy some of
those
hefty new fines. Now I know the issue of the FCC fines and the FCC
in general has already been discussed
here, here, here, and possibly
here. But it seems
like there's
a
fifth amendment issue here that's new to this debate. Will forcing
broadcasters to keep tapes in effect compel them to give evidence
against themselves?

Dave says,
Reverend Billy [from the Church of
Stop Shopping] leads the faithful in rousing choruses of the First
Amendment. A Quicktime clip shows one chorus and the hallelujahs
leaving St Marks church in the East Village, New York, a center for
organizing this week's demonstrations. (more clips from the street
today will be posted this evening). Rev. Billy has been staging public
readings of the First Amendment in smart mobs at Ground Zero and other
locations, exercising the rights to free assembly and speech.

Howard Stern and the First Amendment
Howard Stern and the First Amendment
04/09/2004 07:55 PMThe odious Clear Channel radio barony's firing of
Howard Stern only puts a period at the end of the sentence. The
people who run that company are contemptible, because their action
combines flagrant politics and cowardice -- quite a combination.
But save your real contempt for the FCC, its cowardly chairman, Michael
Powell, and his craven colleagues. Egged on by a Congress that has
shown frightening disdain for free speech, the FCC has gone on its
only holy war against "indecency." (If any of this bothers you, please
contact the FCC and say
so.)
What's indecent is rankly political and financial motives that spit on
the First Amendment. Stern,
as I've noted, is not my cup of tea. But I'll support advertisers who
support him in the future.
For the best coverage/linkage to the Stern affair, be sure to check in
daily at Jeff Jarvis'
blog.

stop the proposed Anti-Gay-Marriage Amendment. (embedded WMP)
Practice What You Preach believes that the institution of marriage
is under assault in Texas from the twin epidemics of divorce and
domestic violence. We are not a gay-rights group. We are mainstream,
straight Texans who want the legislative leadership to stop making
cheap political points by ignoring real problems. VoIP bill "gutted" by amendment

Colorado's Renewable Energy Amendment

Xeni Jardin:
BoingBoing reader Kenneth says,
This is the site of the pro-amendment 37 campaign in Colorado. The
amendment would require utilities in CO to purchase a percentage of
their electricity from renewable sources, getting to 10 percent by
2015. The utilities are, of course, very opposed to it. It may be that
the only way for non-CO residents to legally contribute to the
campaign is through the cafepress shop they have and buy a t-shirt.
But, IANAL, so I really don't know that.
