Iomega begins shipping new FireWire REV
drives
08/02/2004 12:23 PMIomega has begun shipping its FireWire REV drives. These drives
offer up to 90GB of storage. Along with being eight times faster than
tape drives it costs less (somewhere around half the price of average
tape drives).
Data storage leader Iomega has begun shipment of its brand new
FireWire version of its Iomega REV drive. The new product, the REV
35GB 1394/Firewire drive, allows Mac users a supposedly powerful,
high-performance way to back-up there machines or for large, portable
file storage. The REV drive was originally launched back in April, and
available in USB 2.0 and ATAPI models. The device got praise from the
computer industry and press, and was presented with the "Best of
CeBIT America" award. SCSI and Serial ATA models are expected to
arrive later in the year.
This new FireWire drive comes in a two-tone design – white and light
grey, in order to coordinate with the Mac's other products. That ought
to keep fashion-conscious computer-yuppies happy, at least. Each REV
FireWire drive will come with a Mac-formatted REV disk, so you can get
to work straight out of the box. The disk can apparently be
"easily reformatted" for PC users.

On shipping software
On shipping software
12/20/2003 07:16 PMI learned at an early age the importance of shipping
software.
My first software award
It was 1982, I was
barely a teenager, and I was at a computer fair where young geeks from
all over Delaware were competing in a programming contest.
We were paired up at random with other geeks. (Early extreme
programming?) Our mission: to write a BASIC program that sorted an
array of strings.
Each pair had a computer to work on—we were in a room full of
Apple II Plus's (or perhaps Apple IIe's). We had a time
limit, something like two hours.
I discovered quickly that my co-geek didn’t actually know much
about programming, so I just kind of talked to him as I wrote the
program.
We faced a big decision right at the start. Should we use the slower,
but easier to implement, bubble sort algorithm? My comrade just kind
of shrugged and agreed. I laid it on the line: if we do it this way, I
said, we won’t win, because it’s too simple. It
won’t impress the judges. But at least we won’t be
embarrassed: we’ll have a working program.
So I wrote a little program that wasn’t fast but that actually
worked to sort an array of strings. After we were finished, I told my
Dad I wanted to go home, since there was no way we were going to win.
So we left.
But—you can see it coming—we did win. Someone else from my
school accepted the award on my behalf. I still have it.
Lesson? Shipping is important.
Showing up
It’s kind of like what Woody Allen said, “90% of life is
just showing up.” Software is the same: it has to “show
up” first. If it doesn’t ship, it doesn’t exist.
I bring this up because I hear from people and read on weblogs about
software that’s pretty cool but that never gets done. It
doesn’t make it out into the world. And I often wish I could
transfer some kind of magical shipping-energy over to the
developer.
I don’t know why these projects, some of them in quite advanced
stages, don’t ship. I know what I do: I myself don’t even
conceive of not shipping. Once I have committed to a piece of
software, I just keep going.
The brick wall of shipping
I actually picture in my head a weird little scene. I see a big field
of grass with a line drawn in it, like a line on a football field. And
then I picture a giant brick wall moving forward slowly but steadily
toward that line. The line is the shipping mark, and the brick wall is
the software. Nothing can stop that wall.
Part of shipping is attention to detail. It can get boring, tracking
down and finding all the million little things. (Unless you’re a
software developer, you may have no idea how much of software
development is just about all the little details. It’s
housekeeping. It can be overwhelming if you’re not used to
it.)
Another part of shipping is making hard decisions. When do you stop?
How do you know if a feature can wait until a later release? How do
you know which bugs you can live with and which are deal-stoppers?
And another part of shipping is anxiety. What if there’s a
terrible bug that doesn’t appear, despite all the testing, until
right after it’s released? What if you made the wrong decisions
about bug x and feature y?
What you do is just do the best you can—and when you make
mistakes, you deal with them the best you can. You get better at
shipping software every time you do it. Experience is your
teacher.
Trust
Going back to my experience at that computer fair in 1982... I learned
another important lesson. It’s not just that shipping is
important—I also learned that I could trust myself to look at my
resources and the amount of time available and the goal and make a
good call. I learned I could trust my judgment. That doesn’t
mean I don’t make mistakes—I have and I will. But I think
this self-trust is important to shipping software.
(An important point though is that self-trust doesn’t mean
don’t listen to other people. The opposite is true. You want as
much feedback as possible. The buck stops with you, though.)

InDesign CS2
04/04/2005 02:25 AMAdobe announced today the latest version of its layout and design
program,
Adobe InDesign CS2. This new version improves the
speed and efficiency of designers in a variety of workflows from
text-intensive book, magazine, and newspaper production to high-end
XML-based cross-media workflows. Designers can increase productivity
and create more consistent designs by saving graphic, text, and
frame-level attributes as Object Styles, which are easy to apply and
globally update. Exporting objects with the new InDesign snippets
features enables users to easily share or repurpose live InDesign
content and layouts from part of a page.

Macworld review: Adobe InDesign CS
Macworld review: Adobe InDesign CS
01/22/2004 02:13 AMInDesign CS is a subtle yet very powerful update to Adobe's publishing
flagship. The previous version, InDesign 2.0, introduced most of the
key features that made the young program a publishing powerhouse: the
word-processor–like table editor, the Photoshop-level transparency
features, and highly sophisticated typographic control. This version
brings enhancements to many of these features, and it has several
sensational new ones, such as nested styles and a much more efficient
console for accessing text and object attributes. Although InDesign's
interface is still somewhat complex, this is a more capable and more
functional InDesign; in due time, this program will easily claim the
publishing crown.

Bush versus Reagan (Iraqi versus
American)
Bush versus Reagan (Iraqi versus
American)
07/17/2004 11:22 AMA friend was complaining about Ronald Reagan yesterday, not
completely mollified by his death. What had Reagan done to
bother her, I asked? She was upset by Reagan's appointments to
the Supreme Court, by his inaction on AIDS, and a variety of
other domestic issues. How could she hate Reagan more than Bush?
"Bush is out there messing up foreign countries instead of our
own."
Despite not having voted for either man, I discovered a strong
personal preference for Reagan over Bush II. Reagan was an
American working on American problems. Maybe he didn't do as
good a job as we would have liked, but at least he was trying.
Bush, on the other hand, projects an image of spending all of his time
and energy thinking about Iraq and Iraqis. The only explanation
that makes sense is that Bush is actually an Iraqi. Who other
than an Iraqi would be so interested in Iraq? When W. is not
talking about Iraq he is often talking about Jesus so probably he is
an Assyrian Christian, one of the groups that lived in Iraq before the
Arab invasion (background<
/A>).
Perhaps Kerry and Edwards have a chance after all because they are
running against a foreigner.
[Note: there is some chance that Bush is Kuwaiti or Saudi
rather than Iraqi. The owners of Kuwait and Saudi Arabia were
badly inconvenienced by Saddam. There was a New York Times
article right after the 1991 Gulf War where they talked about how the
Emir of Kuwait would marry a 13- or 14-year-old girl every Friday
night and then divorce her on Saturday and that this was the kind of
lifestyle that American troops were supporting by giving Kuwait back
to the Emir--you could understand why the Emir, even with $billions
in foreign bank accounts, was so anxious to have his country
back. Still, there were never too many Christians in Kuwait or
Saudi Arabia so evidence points back to W. being an Iraqi]
