iPods And WMDs

iPods And WMDs

iPods And WMDs 07/13/2004 11:48 PM

Countries like Britain and others are beginning to consider iPods and other mass data storage devices to be “Weapons of Mass Destruction.” As silly as this may sound to anyone with a brain bigger than a walnut, I will agree that they certainly could end up being used to transport large amount of stolen data over borders.

Were Iraqi WMDs a kleptocratic con-job?

Were Iraqi WMDs a kleptocratic con-job? 01/26/2004 11:29 AM
Calpundit believes that Saddam's WMDs were ginned up by scamming Iraqi scientists, who get lots of fake weapons programs funded in order to funnel off the money.
An increasingly out-of-touch Saddam makes sense. High-level scientists faking programs in order to get money for their own pet causes makes sense. Saddam's attitude toward the inspections makes sense because he thought there really were active WMD programs in place that would take time to dismantle. And it may be that even some of the exiles were telling the truth when they reported that Iraq still had active large-scale WMD programs. They might have been scammed the same way Saddam was.

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods? 01/07/2004 06:38 PM
Well, as every other tech site in the world is now telling you, the not-so-secret rumors that Apple was coming out with a "mini iPod", cleverly named "iPod mini" are completely true. The other big story people are focusing on are that Apple has gotten past their Henry Ford-style color options, and will offer the iPod mini in multiple colors. You can read all the details at other sites, but in looking over the stories about the device, I'm wondering if the iPod mini will replace the iPod itself as the popular music device of choice. Personally, I don't own an iPod or any portable digital music player (I barely have any digital music - so buying such a device would only mean I need to rip all my CDs, which is a project I'm still not ready to bother with). Still, the iPod mini seems to make a lot more sense to me than many other portable music devices. The early MP3 players had way too little memory, but once you get up into the 4 gigabyte range, I wonder how much more some people need. Historically, of course, that's a dangerous viewpoint to take - since we've always figured out ways to fill up empty storage space. With Apple even advertising games, calendars and other iPod apps - you can imagine that the memory will go. However, if I were in the market for such a device, I'd definitely go with the mini iPod version right now: it's a better size for carrying around and it's "good enough" in terms of storage space - not to mention that it's cheaper. Thus, while I'm sure there are some people who simply need to have more storage space, I'm wondering if this mini iPod will steal marketshare away from its big brother.

Chinese court orders new instances of
WMDs for hacked virtual arms dealer
12/19/2003 02:20 PM
A Chinese court has ordered a online role-playing game host to create new instances of artifacts looted from a player-character's account after it was hacked.
Li Hongchen, 24, had spent two years, and 10,000 yuan ($1,210) on pay-as-you-go cards to play, amassing weapons and victories in the popular online computer game Hongyue, or Red Moon, before his "weapons" were stolen in February, the Xinhua news agency said on Friday...

In the end, Beijing's Chaoyang District People's Court ruled on Thursday that the firm should restore the player's lost items, finding the company liable because of loopholes in the server programs that made it easy for hackers to break in.

(from Robert) New York Times Magazine had an interesting article about Apple and the iPod a few days ago, The Guts of a New Machine. I didn't expect much when I resorted to asking, in so many words, whether he thinks consciously about innovation. ''No,'' [Steve Jobs] said, peevishly. ''We consciously think about making great products. We don't think, 'Let's be innovative!''' He waved his hands for effect. '''Let's take a class! Here are the five rules of innovation,...

Canadians Can't Tax iPods... For Now

Canadians Can't Tax iPods... For Now 12/19/2004 03:47 PM
Almost exactly a year ago, Canada started taxing MP3 players. They had already been taxing things like blank CDs as a sort of "tax to cover unauthorized music copying" and the idea was to extend it to MP3 players... even for those who were using the players for completely legitimate purposes. Now, a Canadian Court has ruled that this tax is illegal. The reasoning is basically that the wording of Canada's Copyright Act clearly doesn't cover things like MP3 players. What this really means is that Canadian politicians are likely to change that law soon. If anything, certain Canadian politicians will probably use this as an opportunity to try to make the law much more entertainment industry friendly.

To the growing frustration and annoyance of Microsoft's management, Apple Computer's iPod is wildly popular among Microsoft's workers.

[...] So concerned is management, owning an iPod at Microsoft is beginning to become impolitic, the manager said. Employees are hiding their iPods by swapping the telltale white headphones for a less conspicuous pair.
