For a while now we've spoken about how video gaming was appro aching a level similar to professional sports, with companies starting to do sponsorship deals and certain gaming contests showing up on television, complete with commentators and fans. Well, it appears that one place where the idea has really taken off is South Korea where profe ssional video gamers can earn more than $100,000 per year. Of course, the article explains that it's not all fun and (well...) games for the players. They are forced to live in "barracks" of the companies that sponsor them and are required to spend 12 hours a day banging away at their console games practicing for major contests (which are televised). Then, the pressure to win (especially when competing against amateurs) is almost unbearable for some. Seems a bit hard-core, but that's what you'd expect in just about any competitive situation. If the players can't take the pressure, then they probably shouldn't have gotten into the competition.

Yes, this may be off topic. Regardless, it needs to be said. Apparently there has been another quake that hit the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sumatra. It had a force of 8.7 and there are come really valid concerns about another tsunami being something that could be in their near future. Thankfully the U.S. Geological Survey has the technology to measure and hopefully ‘predict’ whether there could be more to be concerned about….

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has pledged $3 million and Amazon.com has raised more than $3.5 million in online donations to provide aid to South Asian countries devastated by an earthquake and tsunamis. Many in the Seattle area have come forward to help as millions of U.S. dollars flow to relief agencies around the world to supply food, water, shelter and health care to the region. Thousands have been displaced by the quake and subsequent tsunamis that struck a dozen countries from Thailand to Somalia. Microsoft's company offices in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and India are working with relief organizations, a spokeswoman told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
