Papal elections are more secure than US
elections

Papal elections are more secure than US
elections
04/14/2005 12:47 PM
Cory Doctorow: The process for electing a new Pope is amazingly baroque and weird. Bruce Schneier has posted a long and engrossing security analysis of how the election works and how its simple and ancient procedures (and the small number of participants) make it more secure than modern electronic voting systems:
How hard is this to hack? The first observation is that the system is entirely manual, making it immune to the sorts of technological attacks that make modern voting systems so risky. The second observation is that the small group of voters -- all of whom know each other -- makes it impossible for an outsider to affect the voting in any way. The chapel is cleared and locked before voting. No one is going to dress up as a cardinal and sneak into the Sistine Chapel. In effect, the voter verification process is about as perfect as you're ever going to find.

Eavesdropping on the process is certainly possible, although the rules explicitly state that the chapel is to be checked for recording and transmission devices "with the help of trustworthy individuals of proven technical ability." I read that the Vatican is worried about laser microphones, as there are windows near the chapel's roof.

That leaves us with insider attacks. Can a cardinal influence the election? Certainly the Scrutineers could potentially modify votes, but it's difficult. The counting is conducted in public, and there are multiple people checking every step. It's possible for the first Scrutineer, if he's good at sleight of hand, to swap one ballot paper for another before recording it. Or for the third Scrutineer to swap ballots during the counting process.

Software That Lasts For Years And Years

Software That Lasts For Years And Years 07/14/2004 06:51 PM
We were just talking about the rise of quick and dirty programs as a way for individuals (not necessarily programmers) to solve specific needs. However, as was mentioned at the time, that would be a different "tier" of software programming, and there would still be a need for programmers to do higher level "big" projects. In the past, we've also discussed the problem of data extinction, where old computer systems and formats die out, leaving content and applications virtually useless on ancient media. This is a big problem for many applications, and Dan Bricklin is now suggesting that people need to start designing "Societal Infrastructure Software" that can last for centuries, not just a few years. The idea is that this type of software shouldn't have to worry about new computers or new formats or new anything... but will be able to just keep on working. In order to build this, though, Bricklin believes it will require embracing open source programming, though not necessarily the way people view open source programming today. It's a fascinating concept, but getting people to think long-term is so difficult these days, that you wonder if such ideas will actually catch on.

Is the CIA tampering with Venezuelan
elections?
08/16/2004 12:43 AM
Is the CIA tampering with Venezuelan elections? A Venezuelan news organization reports that an email was sent to the world press this afternoon, claiming to be early election results indicating a defeat for outspoken Bush critic Hugo Chavez. The email in question appears to be a fraud, sent from a location in Virginia. There are also reports coming in of phony election results being broadcast on Venezuelan television, and rigged exit polls organized by the very people who supported an unsuccessful coup against Chavez in 2002 -- an organization fun ded by our government through the National Endowment for Democracy. Your tax dollars at work. Former President Carter reports that the elections are going well, with a huge turnout, but if Chavez wins, will there be an organized effort -- funded by U.S. tax dollars -- to discredit the election anyway?

Korean General Elections

Korean General Elections 04/15/2004 09:09 PM

As expected, pro-government Uri Party got 152 seats out of 299, which gives them the majority.  Han-nara (Grand National) Party lost its majority position but still managed to eek out a respectable showing, thanks to the daughter of a former dictator who took control of the party just weeks before the election.  It's funny how conservatives prefer the nostalgic certainty of iron-clad rule by dictators over euphoric optimism of liberals.  Min-noh (Democratic Labor) Party emerged in the third place, making the ultra-liberal pro-labor party a political force to be reckoned with.

National Assembly seats after ballot counting[As of 1:00 a.m.]

 Party Before Now
Uri Party 49 152
Grand National Party 137 121
Millennium Democratic Party 61 9
Democratic Labor Party 0 10
United Liberal Democrats 10 4
