MSDN turns off full text RSS

MSDN turns off full text RSS 09/09/2004 05:34 AM

I know a lot of you read this site with a RSS aggreator. Heck I read 90% of the sites I review the same way. But I do know that some of you are running aggreators that poll us every hour. I have the spare bandwidth but apparently MSDN did not and those that have not throttled their aggreators where costing them a lot of money.

I only pull data twice a day once in the morning and once at night. So if you havent played with the scheduling of your polling make sure you save those sites with limited bandwidth some bandwidth charges by not pulling data hourly. [Scobleiz er]

Yet Another Plea for Full Text Feeds

Yet Another Plea for Full Text Feeds 08/19/2004 12:08 AM

Simple RSS Customizations

"The default Movable Type installation automatically publishes RSS feeds for your weblog. The most widely used template - RSS 1.0 Index - generates an RDF file, index.rdf. The default setting on this file produces a feed with the entry excerpt. Here are some simple changes you can make to your RSS 1.0 Index template to generate a full entry feed, to create an RSS feed for a specific category or to include comments with your feed...." [Learning Movable Type]

Okay, MT users - it just doesn't get any easier than this. Us RSS bigots would r-e-a-l-l-y appreciate a full text feed from you, so if you're not already providing one because you're not sure how to do it, be confused no more. Here are step-by-step directions, illustrations included.

Also note that you can save the template shown in this tutorial under a different name and provide two feeds, one with excerpts and one with full text. That way, your readers can decide which one works for them.

Full-Text Syndication Is Entirely the
Wrong Answer

Full-Text Syndication Is Entirely the
Wrong Answer
02/05/2005 09:12 PM

In my previous rant on this it seems folks got the wrong idea about what I was talking about. Specifically incorrect were the following statements:

  • Requiring a click-through on every article is frankly pretty obnoxious.
  • If you make your content available in fewer media, you will have fewer readers.

That's not the idea. I specifically said:

So why aggregate the stories since sites are easy to navigate? Aggregate the permalinks instead and then have the reader program display the permalink in a window or pane, like Cocoal.icio.us does.

If you've never used that program, or an RSS reader like the one in FireFox or Pulp Fiction that lets you do what I'm looking for already, then this is confusing, surely, so let's try something more general than just modifying RSS or its readers and make the real claim:

Full-text syndication is wholly the wrong answer to the situations it is being used to patch.

MySQL Full-Text Search Rocks My World

MySQL Full-Text Search Rocks My World 03/11/2003 01:22 AM
People ask me about MySQL's full-text search from time to time, but I've never actually used it. I understand how it works, so I can generally provide ball-park ideas about performance and suitability for a particular purpose. But until today, I had no first hand experience. That all changed today. My initial reaction: Wow! In MySQL 4.0.10 (I haven't bothered to build 4.0.11 yet) it makes my life way easier. Here's the problem I'm trying to solve, stated generally enough...

Amazon launches full-text search of
books' interiors
10/29/2003 12:11 AM

Amazon.com has launched its anticipated full text search service. Users may now search not only bibliographic information about books, but also the text of roughly 120,000 books' content.

The searchable materials consist partly of already digital materials, and of some scanned texts. Results are in images, not text, and therefore harder to copy.
