I lust for a Roomba
I lust for a Roomba
02/10/2004 01:28 PMI'm just listening to Helen Greiner's presentation of
Roomba.
She actually has one that she is running on the table, and the #etech
-channel is filled with geeks declaring their instant love at the tiny
little home robot.
Can't say I'm much different.
I seriously, seriously want one. Like now.
Update: Joi snapped a photo of me, relaxing outside :-)
Update2: I'm now a bit less enthusiastic. IRobot does in addition
build the PackBot, which is a military bot.
We were shown a cool video in which the PackBot? is
thrown in through a window to a building, drives off the roof, and
drives directly into a river; surviving all this stuff. It was
apparently used during the Afghan war as well. It's just a matter of
time before they strap it with guns.

Roomba Discovery
07/12/2004 07:39 AM
Oh hey, new Roomba! The Roomba Discovery is being
pre-sold "exclusively [to] current Roomba owners" at the moment, but
includes some much-needed improvements, like a self-charging Home Base
which the Roomba will head to, automatically, when done cleaning
(finally!), an "intense cleaning" feature (presumably detecting areas
that need multiple passes, and a dust bin that's 3 times larger.
Sounds like an all-around improvement, so good on them. The Discovery
is currently being sold on the iRobot Store site for $250.

"For higher level control, we've attached a Virgin
Webplayer. The Webplayer was sold as a loss leader for Virgin's
internet service in the late 90s, and thus can be found on ebay for
under $100. It has two serial ports, a 200MHz Geode processor, 64M
ram, and a miniPCI port. Thus, we can give it an 802.11b card, a
webcam, and a usb-serial adapter."

Foreign companies
Vorwerk and Infineon are furthering the process of making Americans
even more lazy. Research into the popular robot vacuum,
Roomba, has shown the inefficiency of being able to cover all parts of
the carpet. These foreigners are developing a robotic vacuum that
interacts with RFID chips imbedded into the carpet. The robot uses the
RFID transmission information to decipher whether or not it has
actually covered all areas of the carpet.

Back-door your Roomba
05/07/2004 03:35 AMPT sez, "This week's "how to" article from Engadget shows how to put
the Roomba Robot Vacuum in hardware check mode. This is a useful mode
for Roomba hackers (and anyone else) to test the functions of the unit
as well as see how the unit works, test the 'virtual walls,' clean
specific parts and have some fun."
Pressing the L button for the 5th time (you'll hear 5 beeps) will put
the Roomba in "bulldozer" mode, in other words it'll just roll forward
no matter what, the sensors and bumpers and picking it up will not
stop it. Be careful, don't let the Roomba damage you or itself.

Circuits section review of the new Roomba Discovery a passing
grade, if only because author William Grimes (oh ho ho) talks about
torturing robots. It's good to know that when robots rise up against
their fleshy masters, we'll all be able to blame Circuits. The
new Discovery does well enough -- it's clearly an improvement over the
previous generations -- but its still, ultimately, an expensive
distraction to getting real cleaning done. And that's why I love
it.

Ever wonder why the
Trilobite 2.0 robotic vacuum is about $1,800 when you can get a good
ol' American Roomba for as low as $160? Turns out, it's because the
Roomba is, as robots are judged, pretty dumb. One of I4U's readers
with a degree in human computer interaction and artificial
intelligence wrote a nice piece about some of the major differences
between the two robot vacuums, which he compares to the difference
between a "Trabant versus a Rolls." Unfortunately, without one of them
fancy AI degrees, the Roomba is the one I can afford.

CNET
News.com gets freaked out when we link to their stories and use their
pictures, so thank god iRobot has a picture of their new Roomba
Scheduler on their site already. The Schedular is pretty similar to
the Discovery, except it includes a timer function that can be set to
activate the robot on a schedule (hence...). It's sort of an obvious,
if welcome, upgrade, so the additional news that iRobot will be
encouraging tinkerers to hack in additional features into this model
is great. A Roomba with a camera is cool, but I think it's time
somebody figured out how to make a Roomba that's smart enough to not
eat cords.

Star Wars III. I
think that if you spliced episodes I, II and III together, you might
get a pretty decent movie. Just take the last half an hour from this
one - because no other bit in it deserves saving. The first third of
the movie is mostly boring - I yawned at the attempts to create
sense-of-wonder (you know guys, there's a thing called "too
much").
The middle part of the movie I mostly giggled through, much to the
annoyance of my fellow moviegoers, I'm sure.
The final third had a bit of the same feeling as the old saga, and
I had nearly a tear in my eye at one point. But still.
Star Wars III is kinda like going to a bad hamburger place: It's
crap food, and then you laugh at a poor waiter who drops a tray and
makes a mess, but their ice cream leaves a decent aftertaste.
Next time, I'll just have the ice cream, thanks.

Neuroscience of revenge
Neuroscience of revenge
08/31/2004 01:55 PM
David Pescovitz:
Researchers at the University of Zurich have shown that revenge is,
well, sweet. Their experiment, described in Scientific American, was
based on a game where one player was given the opportunity to punish
another player for financially screwing him. PET scans revealed that
when a player contemplated revenge, his striatum, a "reward center" in
the brain, became energized.
This sort of causal relationship may explain why people
are willing to discipline a stranger even when there is no immediate
gain in it for them. "Emotions play a proactive as well as reactive
role," remarks Brian Knutson of Stanford University who penned an
accompanying commentary (to a paper about the study in the journal
Science). He notes that "passionate" forces may need to be included in
economic models because, as this research shows, “people show
systematic deviations from rationality."

Reflections on 9-11 and the candidate of
revenge
Reflections on 9-11 and the candidate of
revenge
09/13/2004 02:55 AMThis weblog used to be devoted largely to political essays about the
criminal modus operandi of the Bush Administration, and to pointing
out under-reported news items, like the Bush Administration's
unilateral and unconstitutional suspension of the writ of habeas
corpus by creating a new and fictitious legal category, enemy
combatant, and detaining U.S. citizens like Jose Padilla. In the 2
years after 9-11, when the media decided that the salvation of the
country required pinning wings on the pig who had stolen the election
and pretending it could fly, I spent a lot of time writing about the
follies and crimes of the Bush Administration. At times I felt like a
lone dog baying at the moon. However, in the last year, I've slowly
written fewer and fewer political essays, and spent less time pointing
at news stories. In part this was because my changed life
circumstances left me less time to write, in part it was because I
decided to spend some of that energy actually trying to effect change
instead of just writing about it, and in part it was because around
the first anniversary of the start of Bush's unilateral War on Iraq,
some parts of the media woke up to Bush's lies and started reporting
again. So, except for incidents like Abu Ghraib, where I got so
outraged at the signals from on high that America now condones
torture, I have pretty much ceased to write at length about political
matters. I assumed that as Bush's lies became more widely known, and
the utter cynicism of his exploitation of the national tragedy of 9-11
for political gain became clearer, his support among the American
people would drop precipitously. I trust the long-term judgement of
the American people -- you can only fool them so long, although when
you have most of the media in your pocket it is a lot easier to keep
them fooled for longer. But I have been wrong about Bush' support, or
at least misjudged how much it would drop. About half the country,
plus or minus 5%, still plans on voting for him on November 2. I have
racked my brains trying to understand the American people's support
for Bush. The 5% up or down can be explained by the media frenzy of
the week about Swift boats or National Guard service or similar
garbage (while the media continues to ignore...

09/16/2004 05:29 PMWhile I loathe "I'm busy, will post later" weblog posts, I feel
this is necessary after looking at this site and realizing how
neglected it appears.
In gearing up for this concert in NYC, I've been crazy mad busy with a
million loose ends to tie up before that day, and recently I started
playing with this new beta feature of del.icio.us to post my
daily distributed bookmarks here. I sorta helped coax Joshua to code
the feature, so that I could basically do what Jeff Veen
does on his site, but without all the perl/MT frippery. What I
didn't realize is that once I could post links interesting to me in a
very low threshold way, it would totally satisfy whatever craving I
had to post anything of substance to this site.
So yeah, expect the trickle of daily links for the next week or two
as I descend back into the bitmines to crank stuff out. Oh, if you're
in NYC next week, and you're attending the concert, be sure to look
for me and say hi.

Why does my Apple laptop beep at me?
Why does my Apple laptop beep at me?
04/09/2004 03:54 PMOk. It's driving me so mad that I'm forced in the end to appeal to
the general public. My laptop appears to be beeping at me. Every so
often - no more than once a day, for some reason which appears to be
hardware-related (I'm not even sure it's coming through the
Powerbook's speakers) it beeps at me. Two sets of two beeps in the
form: beep-beep beep-beep, always the same tones. There doesn't appear
to be any particular rationale for when it beeps, except that it could
be related to whether it's on my lap or not (I've never heard it
happen at work) and/or whether it's being charged (I don't think I've
ever heard it beep when it wasn't being charged). It's really worrying
me as I don't know what's causing it to protest. It could even be a
bloody alarm clock for all I know (except that it doesn't seem to beep
at any particular time of day). It's driving me insane - does anyone
know what the hell is going on?
