FCC Allows Add-on Antennas But Read the
Fine Print
07/23/2004 11:39 AMFCC rule allows end-users to change out antennas on their Wi-Fi and
other gear legally if the manufacturer has performed the right tests
and the antennas conform to certain guidelines: Jim Thompson alerted
me to FCC rule 04-165 issued July 12, 2004, which has some substantial
changes for devices that use unlicensed spectrum, most significantly
Wi-Fi. The rules affect devices that operate under Part 2 and Part 15
rules, and we're most concerned with Part 15, which governs 900 MHz,
2.4 GHz, and several bands in 5 GHz. The most notable general
applicable of this rule change is in section 2, which starts with
point 18: "Replacement Antennas for Unlicensed Devices." Until now,
the FCC has required that any antenna to be used with a device
operating under Part 15 rules had to be tested and certified as part
of a system. There was no mix and match proviso. Further, the FCC
required unique connectors for each manufacturer, and required new
connectors to be designed as the existing ones became commonplace.
"Wait," you may ask--"I can go to HyperLink Technologies or other
companies and buy antennas with the right connectors and attach them
to my Wi-Fi gateway. If it's illegal, how can I buy this gear?"
Simple. It's legal to sell antennas; it's illegal to use them. It's
the same logic that guides the sale of bongs and switchblade kits.
It's opposite to the logic that underlies the Digital Millennium
Copyright Act. The antenna/switchblade law essentially says that the
seller isn't responsible for all the uses to which a purchaser may put
a product. The purchaser is obliged to know local and federal rules
and conform to them. Thus, attach the antenna, and you're a pirate.
Assemble the switchblade, and you're a criminal. Forget that there
have been approximately zero prosecutions for the use of these
antennas on home or business systems. But no one wants to be in de
facto violation of a law, especially businesses that may considering
building out Wi-Fi as part of their operations. The lawyers might look
askance, and the companies might have to pay enormously higher fees to
purchase legal antennas--if they're available. Those fees help cover
the companies' cost in certifying the antennas as part of a system,
but also represent their lock-in market for legal use. The FCC rule
doesn't suddenly make all antennas legal for all systems. Instead,
they have chosen...

Jabra BT800 Bluetooth Headset Reviewed
(Verdict: Lots of Features, Lots of
Bulk)
04/05/2005 09:18 AM
For
the life of me, I can't figure out how to configure my phone to pair
with my Bluetooth headset and still ring, which means I miss a
lot of calls if I'm not paying attention. The (relatively) new Jabra
BT800 headset has a built-in vibrate mode that would alleviate that
problem, while giving me another: embarrassment. While the BT800 does
feature an integrated LCD Caller ID read-out, it's also sort of huge,
which makes my likelihood of wearing it anywhere outside of a tech
convention pretty slim. If you don't mind the bulkiness, though,
Mobileburn gives it high marks, with good battery life, excellent
noise-cancelling features, and decent sound quality.

Alvarion Says Pre-WiMax Means WiMax
Commitment
06/18/2004 03:58 PMAlvarion VP says that the company's new platform is ready for WiMax,
backed by their promise to upgrade it: A few weeks ago, I wrote about
Alvarion's BreezeMax platform and took the company to task for not
spelling out precisely what they were promising customers when saying
that BreezeMax was their WiMax platform. WiMax hasn't reached a final
certification stage yet for equipment that complies to IEEE 802.16a:
broadband wireless point-to-point service in the 2 GHz to 11 GHz range
for licensed and unlicensed bands. That certification standard might
not be ready until 2005; likewise, chips designed for it could be that
far ahead, too. I wrote in May that Alvarion should have said We're
not selling WiMax equipment, but something we believe we be so close
to it that only firmware upgrades are required. I also wrote,
Interestingly, while they say futureproofed on one page, they don't
mention whether purchasers would receive free hardware upgrades if the
WiMax standard as deployed is too different to allow firmware changes
to this equipment. Alvarion wanted to clarify what they meant, and I
spoke today with Carlton O'Neal, the vice president of marketing for
the company. I asked O'Neal if Alvarion is guaranteeing its
customers--as a few other firms have apparently done in a limited
way--that BreezeMax would be a zero-cost WiMax upgrade when the final
standard was available. He said it would. O'Neal said that the company
had built the platform to allow software upgrades, firmware upgrades,
and hardware upgrades. They believe that with the current state of the
WiMax standard they can entirely rely on software and firmware to
handle full WiMax certification: "Our hope, our plan, is that it's
software and firmware," he said. Their last resort would be hardware,
but "we're prepared to do that." Alvarion has been developing the
BreezeMax system for three years, and decided that given the state of
WiMax and their own readiness, they needed to bring the carrier-grade
equipment into the marketplace with a commitment to make this their
flagship WiMax platform even though the standard is still under
development. What they deploy today works, and some of their customers
may choose to stick with it far past when interoperable WiMax hardware
and their own upgrades are available. Alvarion will eventually rely on
chips built by Intel to power their WiMax gear, and Intel's circuits
aren't due until 2005 at this point. But...

Sapir/Whorf raises its head again in study of the Piraha tribe.
I can't stop thinking about this
article which appeared in the Globe
and Mail Friday.
A study appearing today in the journal Science reports that the
hunter-gatherers seem to be the only group of humans known to have no
concept of numbering and counting.
Not only that, but adult Piraha apparently can't learn to count or
understand the concept of numbers or numerals, even when they asked
anthropologists to teach them and have been given basic math lessons
for months at a time ... the Piraha are the only people known to have
no distinct words for colours.
They have no written language, and no collective memory going back
more than two generations. They don't sleep for more than two hours at
a time during the night or day.
Even when food is available, they frequently starve themselves and
their children, Prof. Everett reports.
They communicate almost as much by singing, whistling and humming as
by normal speech.
They frequently change their names, because they believe spirits
regularly take them over and intrinsically change who they are.
They have no creation myths, tell no fictional stories and have no
art.
Can any of our anthropologists or linguists comment? I had thought
that narrative was the common link in all human cultures....

Lots Of Passion, Not So Much Profit
03/08/2004 11:04 PMI was having a discussion recently with someone about the challenge of
selling "TiVo-like" products - by which we didn't mean other PVRs, but
products where (a) the product's benefits are difficult to describe
but (b) the early adopters who sign on can't imagine living without
it. It's a challenge a lot of companies face, and no one seems to
have a very good answer. Some people think you just focus in on one
differentiating aspect of the technology and pitch it relentlessly.
Others try to build up word-of-mouth buzz. Still others try to get as
many "trial" users as possible. It really depends on the actual
product, but venture capitalist Kevin Laws is
look
ing at these types of companies and wondering what it takes to jump
that hurdle. Is it just a question of letting the companies grow
slowly, instead of pushing for the mass acceptance right away, or is
there something else to it? It seems to me, that the examples he
cites of companies that have made it over that hurdle were less
revolutionary than those that haven't. That is, while the iPod and
the Treo 600 have done things right, both were actually smart updates
on previously failed products in that space. The examples he mentions
of companies that have struggled (TiVo, PayTrust) are companies that
have spent more time trying to invent and define the space themselves.
The real question, then, is whether or not companies that create a
space can successfully hang on and remain relevant until the market
actually takes off. In many cases, I wonder if those companies have
trouble because they're so focused on their own product and defining
the market that they miss out on the one big feature that catapults a
competitor into market dominance.
