Online Betting Routes Around Bookies

Online Betting Routes Around Bookies

Online Betting Routes Around Bookies 11/03/2003 01:28 PM

There used to be a lot of hype about how the internet was going to do away with the need for "middlemen". It turns out that never happened, because there actually are reasons why many middlemen exist. However, if the internet can make things more efficient, or move some of the burden around, then it probably does make sense. That appears to be what's happening in the UK with an online betting site that takes bookies out of the equation and lets people connect directly to one another to make bets on sporting events. Whereas a bookie makes money on the odds they set, this site just takes a commission off of winnings, letting the people making the best set their own odds. In other words, it's a real exchange, modeled on the stock market, with buyers looking for sellers (and vice versa) as opposed to one central bookmaker taking bets based on odds they set.

News: SiK ram din routes iPod to audio,

News: SiK ram din routes iPod to audio,
FireWire
04/12/2005 11:55 AM
SiK Inc. on Tuesday introduced the ram din, a portable line-out and FireWire adapter for Apple's iPod, iPod photo and iPod mini. The device connects to the Dock Connector found on the bottom of these devices and provides two breakout seven inch cables. Line-level audio output is provided through a right angle 1/8-inch (3.5mm) stereo plug, and the other cable terminates in a six-pin female FireWire 400 connector. SiK claims the ram din is useful for iPod users who want to connect their player to an external headphone amplifier or other device with line input, and power the device using FireWire as needed. The ram din is available in black or white and costs US$21.95.

Library Search AIM Bot

"I love perl. I just coded up a AIM bot to search some random library. Took me 20 minutes. I should be doing my ECE100 homework, but at least I got something interesting done. You can check out the code at lib_a im_search.pl or actually use it by messaging easyasy2kbot.

The bot should be up as much as I can for the next few days on my laptop, starting tuesday morning (connection issues right now...).

It was surprisingly easy to code, especially with IPAC systems returning XML. (See the code for specifics)

This was in response to The Shifted Librarian's post on AIM bots a few hours ago, where she wanted AOL to make more than just a 'Who wants to be a millionaire' bot. Well, AOL isn't going to do it, so I thought I would.

This is really just a spin off of code I couldn't find that did what this AIM with Amazon.com O'Reilly hack did (I did it about a year before the book was published)." [PROTOPLASMIC.ORG ]

Too... damn... cool! Who knew this was so easy? Leland Johnson, that's who! He's got this running against the West Nyack Free Library's Horizon catalog, so now I'll have to try this out with my own organization's Innovative one. If it works, Aaron could add the AIMbot to the business cards he's handing out with his Library's AIM screen name!

So all together now, everyone throw a big thank you Leland's way, and wish him luck on his ECE100 homework!

Side note: as of 11:30 pm CST, I'm not getting any results from the AIM bot, but I don't think it's the code's fault because I'm not getting any results returned from within the WNFL catalog either. I'll try again tomorrow.

Back before I left Kinja, Gina and I made a bet about the ads on the Kinja site -- how long before non-text ads appear? Advertising has never been one of my favorite revenue models for a web site, and when we made the decision to go down that road at Kinja, it was with reservation that I agreed. Too often web sites allow the ads to run amok, ruining the experience of the site. But in discussing the ad approach, we agreed that we'd use text ads, and limit their placement. It sounded like a way that ads could work without ruining the experience of Kinja: reading.

But all you have to do is look at Nick's Gawker Media properties (Gawker, Gizmodo, Wonkette, etc.) to see that our view of advertising -- and belief of when advertising has run amok -- are not aligned. And I knew it was simply a matter of time after my departure that gaudier, flashier ads would appear on Kinja. So Gina and I decided to place a wager on exactly how long that would be. Alas, there were no winners, because we couldn't disagree about how long it would take. We both knew it would be fast. And we both bet it would be less than a month. I've been gone two weeks and two days from Kinja, and there's already a giant CNet ad right in the middle of the digests. Blech.
