Apple competes for multi-million dollar
school deal
01/06/2005 03:00 PM
With Hewlett-Packard dropping out of the race, Apple Computer, IBM and Dell are still in the running to obtain a deal with a school district in Georgia to supply more than 63,000 laptop computers. A report by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution says Cobb County School District’s multimillion-dollar laptop computer proposal involves giving laptops to more than 63,000 teachers and middle and high school students at estimated cost of about $69.4 million over four years. Other expenses, including support, training and maintenance would have to be negotiated. The school system expects one-time costs of about $4.5 million to upgrade wireless capabilities in schools, plus additional or upgraded servers and server storage. Cost seems to be the major issue, with Cobb officials making no secret of their desire to pay $275 per machine – the same cost of Michigan's recent laptop contract with Hewlett-Packard. Cobb's undertaking would be one of the largest laptop programs in the United States if approved.
