U.K. Military Bans iPods
07/13/2004 08:58 AMUK military: iPOD is security risk: Look, do we need
anymore proof that Apple is evil?
The pocket-sized digital music player, which can store thousands of
songs, is one of a series of banned gadgets that the military will no
longer allow into most sections of its headquarters in the UK and
abroad.
Devices with large storage capabilities — most notably those
with a Universal Serial Bus (or USB) plug used to connect to a
computer — have been treated with greater suspicion of late by
government agencies and corporations alike.
This comes on the heels of consulting firm Gartner's recommendation
to ban
iPods in the workplace.

Dumbfuck Gartner report recommends
banning iPods
07/06/2004 11:58 AMSome jackass analyst at Gartner is advising employers to ban iPods and
other personal storage tech from the workplace to prevent leakage of
s33kr1ts from within the corporate hive. Likely successor
recommendation: decapitating all outgoing employees.
"Portable storage products can bypass perimeter defences like
firewalls and antivirus at the mailserver, and introduce malware such
as Trojans or viruses onto company networks."
Devices mentioned include "disk-based MP3 players, such as Apple's
iPod, and digital cameras with smart media cards, memory sticks,
compact flash and other memory media"...
"Businesses must ensure that the right procedures and technologies are
adopted to securely manage the use of portable storage devices like
USB keychain drives. This will help to limit damage from malicious
code, loss of proprietary information or intellectual property, and
consequent lawsuits and loss of reputation," the report stated.

07/06/2004 08:31 AMThe iPod may be popular, but also poses such a major security risk for
businesses, that enterprises should seriously consider banning the
iPod and other portable storage devices, according to a study by
research firm
Gartner Inc. The
devices, using a Universal Serial Bus (USB) or FireWire (IEEE 1394),
present risks to businesses on several fronts: from introducing
malicious code into a corporate network, to being used to steal
corporate data, the Stamford, Conn.-based research company said in its
report "How to Tackle the Threat From Portable Storage Devices,"
published Friday.

class.
""Whoa!" said rising Duke freshman Mollie Tucker of Raleigh when she
learned she'd pocket an iPod. "It sounds like a good idea. It sounds
really cool." When she arrives Aug. 19, her iPod will be loaded with
all kinds of useful information, including orientation schedules,
calendars, campus tours, even the Duke fight song.
"Students also can use them for course content, such as recorded
lectures, music, language lessons and audio books. Throughout the
year, they will be able to download information through a Duke Web
site modeled after Apple's iTunes site..."

Optimistic Gartner Report
Optimistic Gartner Report
02/18/2004 01:17 PMGartner says that the number of hotspot users worldwide will grow to
30 million in 2004, up from 9.3 million in 2003: The firm warns that
companies should take control of how their workers pay for the
service, recommending contracts rather than one day usage fees.
Managed service providers like iPass, FiberLink, and GRIC will be good
solutions for companies. It goes on to say that alliances, mergers,
and acquisitions will be prevalent in the second half of the year.
Most of the recommendations in the report seem to point to the lack of
unity in the market. Today, companies must sign up for service with
multiple operators to get access to the most hotspots. More roaming
and interconnection deals will likely encourage more use by heavy
travelers....

Report: North Korea bans cellphones
06/05/2004 01:00 AMThere are reports today that the government of North Korea has banned
mobile phones. Details are sketchy.
The country banned the use of mobile phones in late May, according to
reports quoting a North Korean official in the country's capital of
Pyongyang. The ban may be due to the deadly train explosion in the
country in April, which North Korean officials have said was triggered
by a mobile phone. Mobile phones have been used to trigger explosions
in other attacks across the world. (...)
By the middle of last year, the country counted 40 base stations and
about 1,000 users. North Korea has a total population of about 22.5
million people. In contrast, South Korea counts 35 million wireless
subscribers and a 75-percent wireless penetration rate (...)

Overblown, overrated, overhyped
Overblown, overrated, overhyped
04/26/2004 01:01 PMToo many open source advocates complain about Microsoft writing
terrible buggy software and think that open source developers do it
better. The truth is Microsoft is innovative, has vision, and
executes well. If open source developers can do as well as Microsoft,
it's a big compliment. Smart people like Miguel de Icaza and Brendan
Eich have known this for a long time. Miguel has a reality check for
these innocent virgins, giving
his
assessment of the potential of XAML and Avalon.
Brendan (one of the Mozilla leads) has a frank assessment of Mozilla too. Not too positive. I talked
about this last
year.
However i think that Miguel and Brendan are just hyping things up.
XAML and Avalon may be great technology but no one is waiting for
Longhorn to implement web based apps - everyone is implementing them
NOW!

introduction to Avalon by Charles Petzold.

Social Tech: Were Webl0gs and RSS
overhyped in Iowa?
01/22/2004 06:47 AMMichael Gartenberg, quoting Scoble, concurs that
weblogs didn't play a big role in influencing the electorate in
Iowa. That is true -- not enough people read weblogs (only 4%
according to Michael) to have it matter in a general
election. However, I am fairly sure that it wasn't supposed to
be a mass communications vehicle at all.
Political parties, from the communist party in the old Soviet Union
to the US's
Republican and Democratic parties are composed of only ~4%
of the voting population. Republicans
and Democrats have about 2 m people each (2% each
of the ~105 m
people that vote. Those are the people that make it
happen. This is much different than registered Republicans and
Democrats. These are party activists. The rest of us are
only here to be influenced.
This is why Trippi and others want to get 2 m people to
contribute (its the 2% that makes a party). By contributing,
they are effectively signing a pledge to vote and work for
the Dean campaign. The idea that it would be possible to get
a significant portion of that funding number via online sources
was and is radical. Even more radical was the idea that this
online group could be formed into a more cohesive and
operationally active "party" that would drive Dean to
victory.
However, these radical ideas haven't played out as scripted due to
the critique I posted below.Social technology is great at building
insurgencies and not grabbing mainstream political power.

Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?
Will Mini iPods Delete Bigger iPods?
01/07/2004 06:38 PMWell, as every other tech site in the world is now telling you, the
not-so-secret rumors that Apple was coming out with a "mini iPod",
cleverly named "iPod mini"
are completely true. The other
big story people are focusing on are that Apple has gotten past their
Henry Ford-style color options, and will offer the iPod mini in
multiple colors. You can read all the details at other sites, but in
looking over the stories about the device, I'm wondering if the iPod
mini will replace the iPod itself as the popular music device of
choice. Personally, I don't own an iPod or any portable digital music
player (I barely have any digital music - so buying such a device
would only mean I need to rip all my CDs, which is a project I'm still
not ready to bother with). Still, the iPod mini seems to make a lot
more sense to me than many other portable music devices. The early
MP3 players had way too little memory, but once you get up into the 4
gigabyte range, I wonder how much more some people need.
Historically, of course, that's a dangerous viewpoint to take - since
we've
always figured out ways to fill up empty storage space.
With Apple even advertising games, calendars and other iPod apps - you
can imagine that the memory will go. However, if I were in the market
for such a device, I'd definitely go with the mini iPod version right
now: it's a better size for carrying around and it's "good enough" in
terms of storage space - not to mention that it's cheaper. Thus,
while I'm sure there are some people who simply
need to have
more storage space, I'm wondering if this mini iPod will steal
marketshare away from its big brother.
