08/28/2004 11:36 AMBea Arthur sparked a security scare at Logan Airport in Boston this
week when she tried to board a Cape Air flight with a pocketknife in
her handbag. The "Golden Girls" star, now 81, was flagged by a
Transportation Security Administration agent, who discovered the knife
- a strict no-no following 9/11. "She started yelling that it
wasn't hers and said 'The terrorists put it there,' " a fellow
passenger said. "She kept yelling about the 'terrorists, the
terrorists, the terrorists.' " After the blade was confiscated,
Arthur took a keyring from her bag and told the agent it belonged to
the "terrorists," before throwing it at them. - via philly.com

Xeni Jardin:
On his website, author and inventor Sir Arthur C. Clarke -- who lives
in Sri Lanka -- says:
Thank you for your concern about my safety in the wake of Sunday’s
devastating tidal wave. I am enormously relieved that my family and
household have escaped the ravages of the sea that suddenly invaded
most parts of coastal Sri Lanka, leaving a trail of destruction.
But many others were not so fortunate. For hundreds of thousands of
Sri Lankans and an unknown number of foreign tourists, the day after
Christmas turned out to be a living nightmare reminiscent of The
Day After Tomorrow.

Disney has launched a $900 kids' PC, called the Disney Dream Desk.
Looks like complete poo. While the mouse-ears on
the
wildly overpriced $300 CRT monitor are vaguely cute, the
system lacks any of the industrial-design whimsy of the old Disney
VCR<
/a> and TV, which geniuinely appeared
to belong in a Disney theme park.
What's more, Disney's Unique Sales Propositions for their PC is that
it comes with censorware that will keep your children from looking at
porn (and about one-third of the sites that deal well with concepts
covered in the common curriculum, oops), and some DRMed-up
make-your-own-Disney-video software. Snore.
Oh and it comes with a mouse. Hardy har har.

(Thanks, Scotto!)
Update: Benoit sez, "The monitor is actually
a flat panel LCD. It looks like a CRT in that picture you have but
that's actually the computer tower placed behind the LCD."

Dave Winer noted some
23 new
feeds from ABC news. What is particularly interesting
about these feeds is that they are marked as RSS 0.93, complete
with a DTD copyright Walt Disney Internet Group. The DOCTYPE
also indicates this ownership. The version number is repeated
in the URL itself.
The channel on these feeds don't have a description (despite
being required by the DTD). Pubdates seem to be in a
compressed form of the
ISO 8601
format. Links are expressed as CDATA (which is OK), but
some of the links have an extraneous double quote character at the
end of the URL (which is not).

Walt Disney's FBI files
12/04/2003 07:19 PM
Walt Disney's FBI files are a hoot -- all 450 pages worth. Mostly,
they consist of various Feebs (all the way up to Hoover, whom field
agents call "The Boss") fretting that Disney's farce comedies like
That Darn Cat (which was based on a
novel written by a retired Agent who was a constant thorn in
the Bureau's side) would cast a disparaging light on the Bureau and
speculating about how to convince Walt to change the FBI agents to a
different species of Fed cop -- SS, Park Ranger, anything but the
G-Men. Also noteworthy: trying to figure out if Walt is a Commie,
debating whether they should let Walt film the crime-lab as part of a
Mickey Mouse Club "future careers" spot.
