PIMP Watch Redux: Star Performer

PIMP Watch Redux: Star Performer 07/13/2004 10:05 AM

PIM003_L1.jpg imageWho would have thought that the original PIMP watch would inspire a sequel? The new PIMP Star Performer has a new display design set inside a stainless steel case. It even has a built-in martini glass that lights up when it's time to get your drink on. Tokyo Flash is selling them, old-school computer font and all, for around 150 bucks.

There's a new DVD on GG Allin. Born Jesus Christ Allin he was a front-man of the still-touring Murder Junkies. An overdose in 1993 did him in. A profile, Hated:GG Allin and The Murder Junkies, was made just before his death and features a portion of his strange funeral. Needless to say, his lyrics and well, his life are NSFW.

"...That audience is there for me. I'm not a performance artist or any of that, I'm not out to please anyone. Just me. Rock'n'roll has to be destroyed and rebuilt in my name if it's ever gonna accomplish anything. It's not about being in some clique, it's for people who don't fit in with any thing....I believe I am the highest power, absolutely. I am in control at all times. 07/22/2004 08:11 AM

wjdcm19l.jpg imageWIRELESS WATCH 2004 is going on in Japan until Friday, and there are plenty of new product demonstrations as well as those currently in development on display. This year's hot sheet includes NTT DoCoMo's "UbiButton," a device similar in form factor to a wristwatch. By detecting the shock waves in the arm created by a simple snapping of the fingers, a switch is flipped that can, for example, turn a light on and off. In other words, DoCoMo has glorified The Clapper to now be called The Snapper. Actually, I know a couple people that can't snap their fingers...what the hell are they supposed to do? [Uhm, clap? - ed] Other highlights from the convention included a working model of a Bluetooth pen, and DDI Pocket's "Jacketphone," a SD card sized PHS module. TechJapan has full Day 1 coverage, with pretty pictures.

Speedtech Weather Station Watch

Speedtech Weather Station Watch 06/15/2004 06:54 AM

weatherwatch.jpg imageIt's about as stylish as wearing a banana on your wrist (as I am required to, by law), but the the Weather Watch Pro from Speedtech needs a little room to stretch out if it's going to provide all this functionality. Check windspeed, barometric pressure (with 9 hour history), altitude, time, temperature, windchill and more, made especially accurate by its built-in Swiss-made impeller (well, windspeed, at least -- I doubt the magnetized impeller helps much with altitude, for instance). For $150, the looks can be forgiven, especially since it's most useful in nautical settings, where even the classiest piece of hardware is either encrusted in salt or clad in three tons of brass.

thanko_mp3_watch.jpg imageWhile running a cord from my wrist sounds like a good way to constantly rip my headphones out of my ears, I have to admit a certain admiration for these new MP3 SuperDisk Watches from Thanko. Not because they're good looking -- they're not -- but because despite cramming up to 256MB of flash memory and MP3 decoding hardware inside, they've still managed to make a watch that looks, for all intents and purposes, normal. It does use a separate cord which would have to be carried around if you want to add or remove data, which could be a hassle, but the watch face is even analog, and waterproof besides. Pick one up at your local Japanese gray market electronics store for only around $150.

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash

Newer, Smaller Flash Cards: C-Flash 03/14/2005 06:03 PM

c_flash_dime_bit.jpgPretec Electronics Corporation, apparently unaware that more than eight competing formats already exist in this market, has developed a new flash memory card called the C-Flash. Smaller than a dime, Pretec seems to be gambling on the "hope your customers lose your product and don't learn from their mistakes" business model. Cards with capacities up to 1GB will be available by June, and they're sampling them in mobile phones, which is just about the only place I'd want to see one. Honestly, though, there comes a point (perhaps when you require magnification equipment) when it's just too small. A note to these companies with the perpetual smaller-is-better mentalities: Just because I might one day be able to carry all of my media collection as well as the Library of Congress on a card the size of an eyelash doesn't mean I'll want to, dig?

While on the topic of Flash Memory formats, now seems like a good time to mention LIVEdigitally's Flash Card roundup, wherein they break down the Flash Jungle into small, manageable pieces.

A Nifty Trick

A Nifty Trick 10/28/2003 11:08 PM

I have a nifty trick I wanted to share, since I think Web designers might find it useful when making reductions of bugs to send to browser developers. Basically I had this bug I was working on where content would sometimes shift too far to the right in Safari (don't worry, this bug isn't in 1.0). The bug was timing-related, and it only occurred intermittently when you reloaded the page.

The bug would only happen if layout occurred at a particular time, and usually this happened when a script was stalled loading long enough for the browser to decide it needed to show the user what it had so far.

If a script stalls, it's blocking the parsing of the rest of the content, so if a layout does occur, you're basically guaranteed that you're going to lay out the content of the page exactly up to the opening script tag and no more.

The bug in question would only happen if Safari had to do a layout before the script had loaded. Maciej (the JS guru on our team) came up with a clever idea: instead of pointing the script at an external resource, just make the script do something that would force a synchronous layout. Then you could basically construct test cases that made layout happen at precise chokepoints that you set up yourself! How cool is that?

A trick that works with both Safari and Mozilla is to try to access a property like offsetHeight, so here's an example:

<script>var v = document.body.offsetHeight;</script>

The layout engine basically has to lay out in order to give you a decent answer, so the handy little snippet above can be inserted anywhere in a document to force the layout of a page up to that point!

Armed with this trick I was able to easily fix the bug, since I now had a test case that demonstrated the problem 100% of the time. Thanks, Maciej!
