IBM Bundling Content With Laptops For

IBM Bundling Content With Laptops For
Schools
04/27/2004 04:11 PMFollowing on the success stories coming out of places like Maine with
their program to give every student a laptop, IBM is working to
bundle
electronic content with their school laptops, so that they arrive
complete with textbooks and over 2,000 works of literature. On top of
that, all those books are searchable, meaning (in some ways) they have
more features than traditional textbooks. Still, what I find odd
about the article is that they repeatedly compare the costs of
textbooks to the costs of computers - which isn't exactly a fair
comparison, unless the cost of the content is free on the laptop. I
doubt that the textbook publishing companies are letting IBM put their
books on the machines for free. So, while price per actual book may
be cheaper, the overall price, including the hardware is always going
to be noticeably higher.
T-Mobile UK Discovers Bundling,
Flat-Rates
T-Mobile UK Discovers Bundling,
Flat-Rates
07/19/2004 06:34 PMCould the wireless carriers in the UK finally be understanding pricing
and competitive issues? It would be a shock if it were true, but
there's more evidence coming out every day. Last week we noted that
Vodafone was basically
giving
away a 3G datacard to anyone who wanted to subscribe to their 3G
wireless service. Today comes the news that T-Mobile in the UK
(stealing thunder from Orange UK's 3G announcement) announced their
own 3G offering that not only is cheaper than competitors but also
provides
unlimited data and unlimited use of T-Mobile WiFi hotspots.
In other words, they're realizing that they don't need to nickel and
dime people, especially when encouraging them to sign up for a new
service where the benefits may not be clear to everyone who doesn't
work at a mobile carrier. Instead, they're offering additional
services and no annoying (and hard to monitor) limitations. It's
still quite possible they'll muck this one up, and T-Mobile still does
seem to believe that for-free WiFi has a place, but it's certainly a
good start.

iTunes And Windows XP SP 2
iTunes And Windows XP SP 2
08/12/2004 09:21 AMConspir
acy theory from a MacDailyNews reader: Microsoft is starting an
online music service. Microsoft releases an update to Windows. Their
largest competitor's software no longer works. Raise your hand if this
is a shock to you.
iTunes didn't "no longer works." What happened
is that the firewall in Windows is warning the user that, hey, iTunes
is sending out and receiving data into your computer. If you
trust iTunes and Apple, then just press this "OK" button to allow the
network traffic.
Which is precisely the correct behavior of a
firewall. If Microsoft's firewall didn't do this, I'd say that
Microsoft has failed in SP2.
One have to remember that there are
quite a bit of network traffic for iTunes: Rendezvous. (This is what
iTunes is using to share music, and find other users that are sharing
music.)
Sorry, but if you are going to post in a forum accusing
Microsoft (or any other companies) of doing illegal things, firstly,
get your facts straight.
iTunes 4 Windows
iTunes 4 Windows
10/28/2003 11:08 PMHell has indeed frozen over - Apple have made
iTunes 4.1 available to Windows users.
It's building up to an interesting time in the music sharing sphere
(?!). As competition to the iTunes Music Store,
Dell and
Napster are also rolling out their own music sharing
services within the next few weeks.
It'll be interesting to see how iTunes is received within the Wintel
crowd. I'm confident that the product speaks for itself - the only
problem might be making enough Window's users aware of it.
There may also be a negative effect simply resulting from it being an
Apple product, though the reverse of this argument doesn't hold when
you take into account the popularity of Microsoft software on the Mac
(Outlook, Word, Excel etc.).

European Ruling May Limit Microsoft's
Bundling Options
01/04/2005 11:03 AMA judge's ruling that Microsoft Corp. must comply with sanctions
imposed by the European Commission while pursuing an appeal of them
may affect the company's ability to bundle new technology into its
operating system, according to analysts.
In a decision issued Dec. 22, Bo Vesterdorf, president of the European
Union's Court of First Instance, rejected Microsoft's request that the
antitrust sanctions be suspended until its appeal is considered -- a
process that is expected to take as long as five years.
Vesterdorf, who presides over Europe's second-highest court, said
Microsoft must offer a version of Windows without its Media Player
software and publish application programming interfaces that should
make it easier for rivals to integrate their products with Windows.

The Many Faces Of iTunes For Windows
12/22/2004 01:13 AMMicrosoft Windows have a philosophy, it seems, to offer one
thousand and one UI choices to do any single thing. This may not be
the best UI implementation, but, hey, it's interesting that Apple's
iTunes is taking this philosphy to heart.
On the Mac, you can
show iTunes as a full-fledge window, as a mini-window, or hide the
iTunes window.
On Windows, here's what you can do...
1)
Display as a full-fledge window, just like the Macintosh
version.
2) Display as a mini-window, just like the Macintosh
version.
3) Minimize the window, so that it appears as a button
on your task bar.
4) Also show the iTunes icon on the system
tray, so that you can right-click on it to access common iTunes menu
items. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose
"Advanced", and select "Show iTunes icon in system tray." Now,
minimize the iTunes windows.)
5) Show the iTunes icon on the
system tray, but don't show the iTunes button on the task bar. (To
enable this option, open the preference dialog, choose "Advanced", and
select both "Show iTunes icon in the system tray" and "Minimize iTunes
window to system tray." Now, minimize the iTunes windows.)
6)
Don't show the iTunes icon on the system tray and don't show the
iTunes button on the task bar. Instead, show a mini-mini player on the
task bar itself. (To enable this option, open the preference dialog,
choose "Advanced", and unselect "Show iTunes icon in the system tray."
Right click on an empty area of your task bar, select the "Toolbars"
sub-menu, and then select the "iTunes" menu item. Now, minimize the
iTunes window.)

Details are lean at the moment, but T3 has information about
a new desktop audio system from Sony that can stream not only MP3s,
but WMA and AAC as well. If Sony supports the DRM schemes from Apple
and Microsoft, the NAS-CZ1 will be the first device I can recall that
is able to play both types of DRM-locked music. Of course, they could
just be talking about streaming unencumbered media files—we
don't even have a proper list of specifications or price yet.
