"Essentials of Windows for UNIX
developers" on-line course goes live!
02/14/2004 09:21 AM
When discussing with CIOs and IT directors the idea of adding Windows to the set of platforms for which they develop custom line-of-business apps, one of the most common questions I hear is this: “I've got a team of 50 (or 150, or...) UNIX developers who've been doing that for ten years, or more. How can I get them up to speed on building apps for Windows?“ A serious problem, since developers are not fungible resources; even if you could replace a UNIX-skilled dev with an equivalent Windows-skilled dev, that new person wouldn't have the unique knowledge of the application and the business that is required to effectively build the right apps in the right way.

Spammer Launches Clothing Line?

Spammer Launches Clothing Line? 04/19/2004 05:45 PM
In what seems like it should be a late April Fool's joke, well known spammer Scott Richter seems to have changed his tune a bit on claiming that his company is in the permission marketing, rather than spamming, business. After getting accused by various companies and the Attorney General of New York of being one of the biggest spammers out there, Richter has decided to launch his own brand of "SpamKing" clothing. Try not to gag as you read about the clothes (targeting "the hip-hop, grunge and skateboarding crowds") will include such catchy phrases as "Just Opt Out!" and "Click it!" Not surprisingly, he plans to spam people like crazy to promote the clothing. In the meantime, the article notes (more seriously) that Richter also plans to file lawsuits against anti-spam groups for stopping his "legitimate" messages. Considering that previous lawsuits like this haven't gone very far, it's likely that any lawsuit he files will also be an annoying waste of time for anti-spam groups (just like spam itself).

Wearing John Malkovich: actor launches
men's clothing line
03/31/2005 05:48 PM
Xeni Jardin: Snip from Theater News item:
John Malkovich, the renowned stage and screen actor, is also the designer of the Uncle Kimono clothing line -- and he will showcase his autumn/winter 2005-2006 men's wear collection at a trunk sale to be held at The Performing Garage (33 Wooster Street) in SoHo on Saturday, April 16, from 10am to 5pm. A percentage of the proceeds will benefit The Wooster Group.

(...) According to Malkovich, "Uncle Kimono is a men's wear collection that resonates with the late 1950s Californian beach boys, some Palm Springs Rat Pack, a touch of lounge lizard, and a recollection of a Swiss banker who's been let go."

A few months ago I was out having sushi with some pals in West Hollywood, and a very dapper Mr. Malkovich sat down at an adjacent table with friends. He was dressed in an extremely funky-fresh outfit, so this news comes as no surprise. He is one stylin' guy. Link to news report, and here is John Malkovich's website. Site also includes some pretty cool t-shirts, like the one shown above, but yow -- they're $70 a pop. (via blogging.la)

Migrating to PowerPC for Robotics

Migrating to PowerPC for Robotics 02/01/2005 10:05 PM
IBM DeveloperWorks recently posted an article titled, "Migrating from x86 to PowerPC: Robots and networked applications". The article compares the PowerPC (or "Power Architecture" as IBM prefers to call it these days) to traditional Intel x86 and ARM processors. Migrating from one of these architectures to another is actually not too difficult if the software is based on Linux which runs well on all three platforms. Ultra-cheap methods of getting started with PowerPCs are mentioned, such as cannibalizing a Nintendo GameCube console or using a Kuro Box. The author, Lewin A. R. W. Edwards, has published a book with more information on the topic, called A Cookbook for Open-Source Robotics and Process Control.
