spam case
02/05/2005 10:10 PMA 24-year-old former American Online software engineer pleaded guilty
to stealing 92 million screen names and e-mail addresses and selling
them to spammers, setting off an avalanche of up to seven billion
unsolicited e-mails.
Associated Press reports that the stolen list of 92 million AOL
addresses included multiple addresses used by each of AOL's estimated
30 million customers. It is believed to be still circulating among
spammers.
Jason Smathers of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, entered the guilty
plea to conspiracy charges in U.S. District Court in Manhattan today.
He is likely to face from 18 months to two years in prison following a
May 20 sentencing. He also faces mandatory restitution of between
$200,000 and $400,000, the amount the government estimates AOL spent
as a result of the e-mails.
Smathers, who was fired by AOL last June, used another employee's
access code to steal the list of AOL customers in 2003 from its
headquarters in Dulles, Va. He allegedly sold the list for $28,000 to
Sean Dunaway, of Las Vegas, who used it to send unwanted gambling
advertisements to subscribers of AOL, the world's largest Internet
provider. Charges are pending against Dunaway.

Do Not Spam Site A Spam Scam
Do Not Spam Site A Spam Scam
02/12/2004 07:39 PMThe FTC is warning (once again) of a scam site that looks like the "Do
Not Call" site run by the FTC, but promises to
put
you on a do not spam list. The site is, of course, a scam for
spammers to pick up more email addresses. This isn't the first time
this has happened. The site is conveniently using the .us domain to
make it look more legit. Amusingly, if you click on the site's
"privacy" link, you get a 403 Permission Forbidden.

Comment Spam Attack
Comment Spam Attack
02/05/2005 09:12 PMSo, apparently I'm not
the only one that was hit by some bleepity-bleep-bleep spammer
trying to post 400+ comment spams to my blogs. MT-B blocked about 300
of them, moderated 80, and let 4 through. That's pretty decent. The
other 80 all had the same base domain so future attacks will fail for
that one domain. There are also regular expressions in place now that
should moderate the more ... interesting ones.
Your comments may get moderated if you include any terms relating
to animal sex or incest. If so, I'll notice when I check my mail next
and approve/reject it, so don't worry. A little delay is all. Keep
those illegal-in-Alabama discussions going! Woo!
That said, I'm wondering if going TypeKey-only is the way to go.
Yes, it makes you make an account (boo-hoo) but it keeps things a
little more sane on the management end. If I get two more of these
full-on assaults I'll do it, but not until then. It will alienate the
more lazy amongst you.

Web site virus attack blunted--for now
06/25/2004 11:31 PM“Netizens are no longer playing Russian Roulette each time they
visit a Web site, security researchers say, now that a far-reaching
Internet attack has been defanged. The attack, which had turned some
Web sites into points of digital infection was nipped in the bud on
Friday, when Internet engineers managed to shut down a Russian server
that had been the source of malicious code for the attack. Compromised
Web sites are still attempting to infect Web surfers’ PCs by
referring them to the server in Russia, but that computer can no
longer be reached. Still, Web surfers should still take care, as this
type of attack is increasingly being used by the Internet underground
as a way to get by network defenses and infect officer workers’
and home users’ computers. “
