and More
06/28/2004 01:13 PM

Apple has announced new aluminim displays to match their G5 PowerMacs. Along with the 20-inch ($1299) and the 23-inch ($1999), a new 30-inch mega-display has been announced that will be driven by a customer dual-DVI video card that will cost $600. I'll get you pictures as soon as I can.

The 30-inch display will cost $3299 without the necessary $600 video card and will be available in August. Unconfirmed resolution is 2560 x 1600.

Looks like the video card is from Nvidia, which would explain that announcement earlier today about SLI, I bet.

Mac OSX Tiger (10.4) will ship in the first half of 2005 and will be native 64 bit instead of the hinky 64/32 bit system from before.

Apple is adopting the MPEG4 .h264 Hi-Definition DVD spec in the Quicktime for Tiger.

I don't know why it is, exactly, that people feel they must concoct some convoluted and unlikely story every time they send in pictures of pre-release items. I mean, I'm fairly sure I've seen these shots before, right here on Gizmodo even, so adding that these were sent to you by your bestest friend who works as an engineer in Cupertino doesn't lend any veracity to these pics, which are interesting enough without all the bullshit. Anyway, I'm going to go with my gut and say these are probably the real deal--but bear in mind I have nothing to base that on except my unflagging, infallible tech future intuition.

Michael says, "Here's another petition asking Apple to acknowledge a widespread manufacturing defect. This one concerns the problem with Apple's 17-inch Studio Displays that causes the top or bottom half to go dim, and the power light to blink incessantly. There is an ongoing thread on Apple's Discussion Board that currently has 371 replies, with 172 unique user names reporting the problem. It had 378 on Tuesday, but 8 of them, including one of mine, have since been deleted by Apple. I have spoken to Apple's Customer Relations regarding the issue, and they refuse to acknowledge it as a known problem. A flat-rate out-of-warranty repair is $458.95. A new display is $699." With some affected systems already out of their standard one-year warranty period, Apple on Friday posted details of its 15-inch PowerBook G4 Display Repair Extension Program, which offers a fix for certain Titanium and Aluminum 15-inch PowerBook G4's that show faint white spots on the screen. The worldwide program does not extend the warranty of these PowerBooks, but it covers replacement of LCD panels that show the spots; Apple covers the cost of the repairs and shipping charges, if applicable. Apple will also reimburse PowerBook owners who have already paid for eligible repairs.

01/04/2005 11:12 AM

23gz_xserve.jpg imageWhat would make Apple announce a upgraded Xserve G5 just a week before MacWorld? Could it be that they're so crammed full of new product announcements that they're actually pushing stuff out early? Wishful thinking, perhaps, and idle besides—this 2.3GHz Dual G5 rackmounted machine is a beaut. Why can't all my machines be rackmounted, huh? If I didn't play videogames, I could ditch these goofy square machines forever.

Slightly more plebian, though, is news that Apple has dropped the price of the Cinema Displays, starting with the 20-inch model for $1,000, up to the 30-inch for three large. (Thanks, Lawrence!)

Forget The Electric Guitar, It's Time To
Go For The Digital Guitar

Forget The Electric Guitar, It's Time To
Go For The Digital Guitar
02/18/2004 01:19 PM
Growing up, I always thought the coolest thing my father owned was a beautiful Les Paul Gibson electric guitar. The famous electric guitars really haven't change all that much over the years since they were introduced, but they're finally catching up to the digital age. Gibson is getting ready to start selling a digital version of the guitar. It looks and plays like a regular Les Paul, but the sound is sent out digitally, making it easier to manipulate. Instead of regular audio cables, you'll plug in an ethernet cable (no WiFi?). Of course, some traditionalists are upset, and others point out that people will need all new equipment to use such a digital guitar. Among the features of the guitar will be the ability to upgrade the guitar as the digital offering improves. My first thought on reading this, though, was how soon it would be before someone hacks their guitar. We no longer need amplifiers that can go to 11, because we'll just be able to overclock our guitars.

Smash the Windows

Smash the Windows 11/11/2003 03:37 AM
As our society becomes ever more dependent on information technology, the gulf between those who understand computers and those who don't will get wider and wider. In 50 years, perhaps much less, the ability to read and write code will be as essential for professionals of every stripe as the ability to read and write a human language is today. If your children's children can't speak the language of the machines, they will have to get a manual job - if there are any left -- Dylan Evans.

JamPlug Guitar Amp

JamPlug Guitar Amp 08/16/2004 08:06 AM

7jamplug.jpg imageDVForge's new JamPlug, an in-line (well, I guess most audio equipment is inline, but bear with me) amplifier that is billing itself as the "World's Smallest Guitar Amp," and for once a world's-smallest claim is probably on the money. The $60 piece runs on a single AAA battery and has a pair of strangely-familiar matching white headphones. The thumb wheel controls volume, and it even can be overdriven into some quality of distortion, which probably isn't the best sounding fuzz or crunch or whatever in the world, but if it can free the legion of pimply guitar noodlers from the curse that is the Rockman Metal Ace, then the amateur rock world will surely be a better place.

Won't ship until October, but you can get on the list now to be notified.

The Fernandez-made electric has a built-in speaker and amplifier so you can plug a headphone right in and start writing your ode to ultimate adorability. And while the polka dot version is shown here, there is apparently a matching sparkly pink version the guy selling these can get a hold of. Now we're talking something worth $400.

What acolyte of rock wouldn't be proud to walk through a smokey club with a matching pink gig bag? None I would prefer to rock to, that's for sure.
