Survey Says, US Net Surfers Bored Of
Taking Online Surveys
04/05/2005 04:42 AM
According to a study released by Nielsen/Netratings, Americans spent 2% less time online in March than they did a year ago. Is there reason to be alarmed? Not really. In order for this data to be truly useful, we need see the amounts of time spent online broken down by tasks and have comparative metrics for their offline counterparts. Something like: taking online surveys (down 2%), reading email (up 9%), deleting spam (down 11%), surfing the web (up 13%), surfing the ocean (down 3%), working at the office (down 10%), spending time with kids (up 17%), and making sure you're up on the latest pointless statistics (up 13%). It's not that statistics aren't important, it's just that 50% of all statistics are made up anyway.

New Online Scam Poses As Paid Web Ad

New Online Scam Poses As Paid Web Ad 04/07/2005 10:29 PM
Shape-shifting internet scammers have done it again. The goal: lure unsuspecting users into submitting credit card and/or other personal information under false pretenses, aka phishing. Nothing new there -- anyone who has read their email in the past couple years has probably received at least one fake eBay or Washington Mutual notice requesting that you update your account. Perhaps one too many of us caught on to these fraudulent emails (not having an eBay, WaMu, etc. account is usually the first sign of suspicious activity). The latest spin on this (internet)-age-old chicanery: paid web ads for cheap airline tickets. Who woulda thunk it? Tapping our innate desire for discount airfare while exploiting our inherent trust of online advertisers is a pretty devious combination. People also trust those who carry the ads to weed out bogus come-ons, not realizing how difficult that is. This means, it's probably only a matter of time until Google or Yahoo get sued by someone who fell for the fake ad. The scammers compound the theft with a double-whammy, displaying an error message after receiving your details and requesting the fee by money order. Ouch. No word on a victim count yet, but then again, cyber-fraud of this nature seems to flourish even without a high success ratio.

LA Times online unclenches from

LA Times online unclenches from
paid-subscriber-only silliness
07/30/2004 02:11 PM
In recent months, the Los Angeles Times has taken a hell of a lot of heat from bloggers, media critics, and even some of its own writers over a constipated web content management policy that locked up all "Calendar" section listings to paid subscribers only. They've finally reversed that policy. This is groovy, because links just want to be free, man. Link

Update: A number of BB readers who are non-LAT-subscribers have written in to say that the "unclenched" content is "re-clenched," and that they can't access without paid subscription. Others have written in to say that registration, but not paid subscription, is still required. This could be a temporary tech glitch, but I'm still confused, and so are the rest of the LAT's online readers, so AFAIK it's still broken. Why do some publications insist on getting in the way of readers who just want to read basic content like this? I'll be looking for that new Koreatown barbecue/karaoke hotspot on their mercifully reg- and sub-free competitor LA.com.

How Bad Is Paid Search?

How Bad Is Paid Search? 11/18/2003 11:30 AM
For well over a year folks at the FTC have been "concer ned" about the rise of "paid search" results, where results that are paid for are included without any indication to he end-user that these are sponsored results. Search Engine Guide takes a look at a few different search engines and de monstrates just how deceptive this is - as plenty of search engines are almost entirely made up of paid for results without indicating the monetary relationship. Of course, if the paid search results are that bad, you would think people would go elsewhere - and, there's plenty of evidence to suggest they do. Studies show that the majority of folks still use Google - who is very clear on separating paid results from straight search results.

The Dot Com Freebie That Paid Off... For
The Few Who Remembered
06/02/2004 10:10 AM
In 1998 you couldn't open a browser window without finding some sort of ridiculous "free" dot com promotion - and one of the most ridiculous was a company named TravelZoo that picked up on the fact that everyone was drooling over stock options in companies, and decided to offer "free stock" in the company to anyone who signed up to use their service. It got them a ton of hype, and for about everyone was talking about them. Then, most people forgot about them - even many who signed up to get that free stock. It turns out that maybe they should have paid more attention. That free TravelZoo stock is now actually worth something - but it's too late to redeem your shares if you didn't already re-register the stock when the company moved their shares to the Nasdaq (something most people didn't do). Of course, you have to wonder why the company only seems to be so vocal about this after the date is now passed.

MPAA Gets New Top Paid Shill

MPAA Gets New Top Paid Shill 07/01/2004 03:41 PM
Well, it's not surprising (and it might barely be worth noting), but the MPAA has officially named Dan Glickman to replace Jack Valenti as their new top paid shill. Glickman, of course, says his number one goal is to "fight piracy," rather than, say, figuring out a way to embrace new technologies to help increase the movie industry's market. Not that something like that would ever happen. While the news reports note the fact that Glickman, the former USDA secretary, is a politician more than a Hollywood insider, that's not really that newsworthy. His job is to lobby, so of course they want a political insider. Besides, he isn't completely unknown in Hollywood. In the past he's lobbied for Disney and his son is a successful movie producer. Either way, it is, as everyone expected, more of the same.

So I'm sitting here on a wet Sunday morning and watching a video by Justin Hall. He's gone back to school - and is having a great time in LaLa.

Excerpt from a Justin poem.....

I pause during my second ginger ale and sit on a couch and wait for my date: soon after i'm surrounded by red velvet ropes and told i'll be asked to leave when the reserved party arrives

what is sincere - the hunger

these are mostly willing, witting participants in identity drama for fun and profit
and maybe its their blustering confidence, their embrace of insincerity that is so defying
what do they know?
how did they choose?
what was their opening move?

this kind of analysis ignores the individuals involved

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. A company named AdNoodle is letting you waive your rights under the Do Not Call list in exchange for cold hard cash. You decide how much it's worth to you - 50 cents, $1, $2 per minute - to have a friendly chat with your local telemarketing concern and answer a "listening comprehension" quiz afterwards. What's your conventional wisdom on this one: Are we bargaining ourselves into a win-win situation? Or are we becoming low-priced callgirls for the bottom-feeders of corporate America? We report, you decide. (via Fark< /a>)

Four years later the company was so battered that in February it became a meal for Cingular, a competitor that didn't even exist back then.
