Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary (GRNMS) has created a new poster and web site spotlighting the fascinating, tiny creatures that live under the sand of the sanctuary floor. Barely visible to the naked eye, when viewed under a microscope these creatures look like the sea monsters of old legends - hence the poster's name, "Sea Monsters in the Sand." The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) manages Gray's Reef Sanctuary.

From Dana Epp's ramblings at the Sanctuary: Since most of you read my blog via RSS, using RSS feeds is probably not new to you. However today I had the distinct pleasure of presenting the powers of RSS and weblogging as it relates to information gathering techniques for the infosec professional to my peers at the CIPS Security SIG. It was nice to see a majority of the people there open to the opportunities of RSS, and the very fact that most have stated that they are going to try it...

Buddhist Hell Theme Park in Vietnam

Buddhist Hell Theme Park in Vietnam 05/02/2004 11:06 AM
Following up on this earlier post, BoingBoing reader Hostile17 says,

"Another example of an Asian site featuring the torments of hell. It's not in a museum though, it's in a theme park in [Vietnam]. I mean, three words: Buddhist Theme Park! I was a little baffled by the concept myself but it was a lot of fun. Rides and stuff, plus this animatronic display of the [twelve] torments of hell for people who'd committed particular crimes. It was a little like Pirates of the Carribean, only incredibly lame, tech-wise. There was one specific punishment for gamblers, one for adulterers, another for drug-takers. It was kind of amusing how different members of the family I was with laughed nervously at different exhibits. If you're ever in Saigon, you have to visit, it's truly strange."

The park has a website where you can watch short MPEG movies of attractions, including the Hell exhibit. The whole park is surreal -- check out the wicked cool photos these gigantic swimming pools with faux-stone monuments of gods watching over. This one -- an old man with a waterfall beard -- is my favorite.

It's certainly mental

It's certainly mental 05/09/2004 11:35 AM

Not a banana, Anna.

A terrifc time sink that is just a notch above completely pointless to make you think that the time might not be completely wasted is the mental_floss quiz and factoid library. It's surprising the amount of useless information you can recall on demand but have trouble remembering what you had for lunch yesterday. mental_floss magazine would appear to be the USA Today of trivia magazines and part of the growing fad of publishing bound collections of trivia like Schott 's Original Miscellany. The Freudian Slippers they sell on their site are pretty cute and unusual though. :)

Zen and Mental Wedgies

Zen and Mental Wedgies 09/12/2004 11:43 PM

A nice quote s on Zen via Marc,

"before studying Zen - man is man and mountains are mountains - yet things are confused."

"while studying Zen - man is no longer man and mountains are no longer mountains."

"after studying Zen - man is man and mountains are moutains - yet things are no longer confused."

My take on Zen is even more down to earth.  To me, Zen is just a tool to remove mental wedgies.  Just as brushing your teeth regularly keeps your teeth healthy and smelling fresh, practicing zazen regularly removes mental debris stuck in your mind before they could infest and grow into something more menacing.

Zen doesn't deliver truth or meaning of life, just a more comfortable perspective, a product created out of necessity by those who suffered enough to shave their heads over thousands of years ago.  It won't help you if you are crazy though just as you can't brush your teeth if you can't hold a toothbrush.  That's what shrinks are for.  It will help you if your mind is tangled into a ball of mess by your own doing.

Thank goodness Zen masters don't charge like doctors do.

Tales from the Mental Hospital

Tales from the Mental Hospital 06/09/2004 01:22 AM
Tales from the Mental Hospital. "I fought them the best I could, but it was no use at all. I was rather quickly overpowered and dragged inside. A smart person would have just given up at that point, but at the time I was by no means a smart person. I started pulling and struggling to get these guys off me. This only made the situation worse, as I was forced down onto the floor of the wing so the nurse could come and administer the ever popular needle of Ativan into my ass cheek. I continued to try and fight, until a rather large fellow named Abdullah decided the best way to keep me down would to be to use his knee to pin my head to the rug."

Mental card games without a referee

Mental card games without a referee 12/07/2003 06:05 AM
Is it possible to play card games without a deck of cards and without a referee? The question has profound implications for cryptography, in which the need to nominate and monitor a trusted third party (the referee in a cryptographic transaction) is a major pain in the ass -- this is the basis for the assertion that Trusted Computing systems will enable P2P games and distributed computation projects to proceed without cheating. This paper demonstrates some of the ways that we can dispense with a referee and rely on math to keep everyone honest.
Mental card games are played without a trusted party and without cards. It is well known that the problem of mental card games can be solved in principle. But the schemes known so far are too messy to be used in practice. Only for the mental poker game a suitable solution is known [Cr'ep 87] that achieves security against player coalition and complete confidentiality of a player's strategy. Here, we present a general-purpose scheme that may be used as basic toolbox for straight-forward implementations of card games. We present a data structure for cards and decks that is secure against player coalitions and enables standard operations like picking up a card, opening it, and (re-)mixing stacks. Futhermore, we introduce tools for special operations like inserting a card into the deck, splitting the deck, parting the game. The correctness of all operations is testified by zeroknowledge proofs.
