Thirty seven feet and two inches 07/13/2004 01:39 AM

Hungry? How about a 37'2" hotdog? Vienna Beef was proud to feature this record breaker at Taste of Chicago earlier this month. More info over at MeatNews. Can't get enough hot dog action? Surely you saw Kobayashi< /a> chow down on ESPN 2. Still hungry? This ought to fill you up. (Note: Some of these links have gross pictures)

Turning thirty

Turning thirty 07/25/2004 07:45 AM
Kolibri has had a sudden anxiety attack over turning thirty. I, having passed that mark long ago, realized that there is very little I can say.

At some point you start to think of your life, and generally feel bad or good about it.

Thirty is as good as age as any.

Our society attaches certain labels to certain ages, and thirty is one of the ones where you are supposed to finally turn into a responsible adult (in case you hadn't done it before). I don't believe the exact age matters, but I think it is necessary for people to pause at some point and reflect. It's even inevitable. It's a part of growing up. So one should not feel too bad about it; in fact, one should welcome these moments of self-reflection. They are good.

My life changed at 27, and realized I am not who I thought I was. It took me a few years to get to grips with the fact that I am still, even at 34, at a complete loss as how to I should lead my life. It's like the more I learn, the less I know. And I guess that's how it should be. People who are older than me, feel free to correct me.

All I can do is to rely on some things that I think I know now. But I'm still "waddling through the swamp with leaking boots, in the dark with no light, and having no clue where to go; just trying to find firm ground; and not to drown."

"Sixteen Candles" Adds 20 More to the Cake

"Alas, convergent friends, we are aging. That seminal movie of the 1980s, "Sixteen Candles," is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. To honor the John Hughes classic, AMC is airing it at 8 tonight, followed by an episode of its behind-the-scenes series, "Backstory" in which they'll talk with stars Molly Ringwald and Anthony Michael Hall. Truly, for those of us in and around the high school class of 1986, this is as TiVo-worthy as it gets." [Lost Remote]

I happened to catch part of the movie tonight (wish I'd known about the special afterwords - damn my late reading of my aggregator!), and I laughed pretty hard when one of Farmer Ted's geek friends says, "I'll bet you a dozen floppy disks you don't even get a kiss." Which, of course, is followed up for a request for a video as proof, which Anthony Michael Hall rejects because it would get duped "like a hundred times" and show up everywhere. Ah, the days before P2P and the internet....

Thirty Years and 35 Broken Bones Later

Thirty Years and 35 Broken Bones Later 09/08/2004 02:10 PM

Thirty years ago today, Evel Knievel attempted to jump the Snake River in Idaho. I have vague memories of going to the pay-per-view to watch this historic event and I still have the tickets to the show to prove I was a pack rat even at the age of six. He didn't have great success that day and within a couple of years, Evel was headed to retirement at the age of 38.

A commentator at the time said that after his jump he would either be "an American hero or a dead screwball." I'll go with something in between. How about American Screwball? It's truly a miracle that he's still alive thirty years later. I think every American boy raised in the 70's idolized this guy. He was truly an original.

Raleigh paralyzed by 0.7 inches of snow

Raleigh paralyzed by 0.7 inches of snow 02/01/2005 10:02 PM

We were hit by an unexpected winter storm today. It dusted the area with less than an inch of snow and paralyzed the city. Hundreds of kids are still stuck at school and many will spend the night there. We've got a couple of extra kids staying with us too. Folks are trapped in gridlock all over the area right now at 11PM, still not able to get home from work even though they left halfway through the afternoon. Folks are complaining about the school system's poor planning, the county's inadequate response, and the horrible gridlock. How do I know? They're snowblogging it on the WRAL site.
