Microsoft Throwing Its Weight Around

Microsoft Throwing Its Weight Around 12/19/2004 02:57 PM

Yeah, I know. What's new about that?

MS lawyers jumped all over the administrators of digital.forest demanding that they immediately shut down the MacSlash site because someone posted what appeared to be a valid Longhorn serial number in a comment to a post there. (Story here.) From the logs, the MacSlash guys figured that that comment was accessed exactly once in the eight months it was there. By MSN's own search bot.

Chuck Goolsbee, head geek at digital.forest, responded to the hounds:

A short lesson in human nature... Try asking nicely. I realize that owners of intellectual property feel the need to enter into discussions with lawyers blazing, but I know from long experience that attack begets defence, whereas courtesy begets respect. If you look at this situation objectively, I'm sure you will realize that the site owners have not acted in any malicious way. The content in question was posted to the bulletin board by some anonymous user. So, rather than using terms like "Demand for Immediate Take-Down" why don't you try something like "Please remove copyright infringing content".

You will likely be amazed at how much better it works.

(I've always liked that Chuck!)

Of course, Ben from MacSlash edited the serial number out of the comment as soon as he realized it was there. The funny thing is that now that it's gone from MacSlash, it can still be seen in Google's cach e of the page. I wonder how many people have seen it now.

I've started trying to exercise more regularly for the past couple weeks, going for a 12 mile, hilly bike ride 3 times a week. Today I did my ride with a decent average speed and finished it in the shortest time yet. The loop I ride has a couple 10% grades in it and I do about 250ft of climbing through it. I was walking around the house today feeling pretty cocky about my progress when I sat down to watch one of my current favorite shows, The Lance Chronicles.

On tonight's episode they followed Lance Armstrong through his european training. One of his regular rides was a 4 1/2 hour, 30 mile climb from the flats high into the mountains, going straight up. It turns out he climbs over 13,000ft in that single ride. When I was in marathon shape, I did a few hikes where I would gain about 6,000ft in a single day from basecamp to summit, and Lance is doing more than twice that. As a training ride.

I'm thinking he's a shoe-in for this year's Tour.

Want to help fight terrorism? Want to be able to stop and detain suspicious characters? Or do you just want to ride your horse on ten miles of trails normally closed to the public? Then you might want to join the George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) Airport Rangers program. That's right. Just fill out a form and undergo a background check, and you too can become a front-line fighter as Houston's airport tries to keep our nation safe and secure. No experience necessary. You don't even have to be a US citizen.

Videobl0gging Week Day 6

Videobl0gging Week Day 6 06/25/2004 05:10 PM

Lucas from Webjay told us that users are using it to do videoblogging as well. Here's an example. Today, I filmed myself checking out that example. I only took 1 simple video, otpimized and uploaded it. No editing, not even selecting. Overall under 10 minutes. Size is less than 300K, my kind of videosize. Videoblo gging week rocks.

Videobl0gging week Day 3 06/22/2004 10:17 PM

I was going to do this as a SMIL presentation that plays the different movies in sequence, mixed with some text, but no time. It's going to take a day or so for me to figure this SMIL stuff out... I'll have to do it when I find some time. So here's today entry for videoblogging week. Filmed during my commute home in small bits. I put together a bunch of the scenes I filmed (no editing). It's my longest film so far, it's 2.25 Megs, too large to upload through the browser upload of my MT installation so I had to FTP it.

Because it's so large, it's inside this entry. Yes I know I should use a "coverpage", but no time to figure that one out today...

Videobl0gging "Moments" 05/03/2004 09:39 AM

Jay is videoblogging what he calls "moments": very short videos, empathically not telling a story but showing a moment. Jay used to work for CNN, then quit and went to public access TV, and now is starting this videoblogging thing. One to look out for if you're interested in the evolving language of videoblogging.

Nude phonecam pix put cops in a fix

Nude phonecam pix put cops in a fix 03/31/2005 03:00 PM
Xeni Jardin: A police officer is accused of downloading naked photos of a suspect from her own cell phone after a DWI arrest, according to a report. The officer has been "reassigned" pending the outcome of an internal investigation, as has his partner on the force -- while the department looks into reports that he phoned the suspect's home to ask her out on a date.

Snip from a Houston Chronicle story, via Declan McCullagh's politech:

During the arrest, they discovered that the woman had stored sexually explicit photos of herself in her cell phone, and Green downloaded the images onto his personal digital assistant, according to the search request.
Here's a PDF of the warrant to search the officer's PDA: Link. Politech reader Scott H. says:
[This] sure seems beyond the pale of unreasonable search and seizure (small pun). Hypothetically, what if the phone had a picture of the woman in question standing over a dead person in back of her home? Is this a warrantless search and if they find the body in her home is this fruit from a poisoned tree? Do the police have a right to search through all the "data" a person has in thier possession at the time of arrest? What about a USB flash drive? Encrypt, encrypt, encrypt.
Link< /a> to EWeek story, and Declan recommends FileVault and PGPdisk as handy encryption utilities. Here are more.

Update: Looks like my blog-mate Mark Frauenfelder covered this item over at The Feature -- Link.
