Ken Brown's Motivation, Release 1.2
Ken Brown's Motivation, Release 1.2
05/21/2004 05:24 PMOn 20 May 2004, I posted a statement refuting the claim of Ken Brown,
President of the Alexis de Tocqueville Institution, that Linus
Torvalds didn't write Linux. My statement was mentioned on Slashdot,
Groklaw, and many other Internet news sites. This attention resulted
in over 150,000 requests to our server in less than a day, which is
still standing despite yesterday being a national holiday with no one
there to stand next to it saying "You can do it. You can do it." Kudos
to Sun Microsystems and the folks who built Apache. My statement was
mirrored all over the Internet, so the number of true hits to it is
probably a substantial multiple of that. There were also quite a few
comments at Slashdot, Groklaw, and other sites, many of them about me.
I had never engaged in remote multishrink psychoanalysis on this scale
before, so it was a fascinating experience.

05/25/2004 10:29 AMKen Brown's forthcoming book, published by the Alexis de Tocqueville
Institution, is embarrassingly mistitled Samizdat: And Other Issues
Regarding the 'Source' Of Open Source Code. No doubt you've heard of
it by now, although more than likely you've only heard Andy Tanenbaum
and others respond to it more than anything else. It's basically the
world's largest troll, seasoned with more than a hint of flamebait. In
the history of publishing there has never been a less scrupulous work
than this book. It's a stinging insult to real books and genuine
authors everywhere, harming the credibility of all of us who write for
a living.
Critique of Ken Brown's response
Critique of Ken Brown's response
06/06/2004 09:29 AMI hereby present a critique to K5 of Ken Brown's response to critics
of his book, Samizdat. The following quote gives a good introduction
to the sort of response it is: Linux is a leprosy; and is having a
deleterious effect on the U.S. IT industry because it is steadily
depreciating the value of the software industry sector. Software is
also embedded in hardware, chips, printers and even consumer
electronics. Should embedded software become 'free' too, it would be
natural to conclude the value of hardware will spiral downward as
well. Does this remind anyone of the stance that Microsoft took that
the GPL is "viral"? Note: in the interests of attribution (which Ken
Brown likes to talk about a lot), I cited all articles linked to on
June 5th (Sydney, Australia for those across international date
lines). I am unable to prevent any changes made to this website.

Security Concerns
Security Concerns
05/25/2004 08:40 AMMac OS X users have been hit by a barrage of security concerns and
exploits over the last week. Most of these issues stem from the
discovery last week of the
URI Handler Arbitrary Code
Execution vulnerability.
To close this hole you should at least download and install
Apple’s Security Update 2004-05-24 (for
Jaguar &
Panther). Software Update will also pick up the
correct version for your system. Further protection can be taken by
using
RCDefaultApp
to disable the follow protocols :
While you’re using
RCDefaultApp
, it’s probably wise to change the default handler for the
ftp protocol from the Finder to an FTP application (eg.
Transmit or Interarchy etc.).
For complete and thorough analysis on how and why this can happen,
read these posts on Daring Fireball :

VertiGo and Cablebuddy Review
04/06/2005 02:46 PMWaterfield Bags launched a SleeveCase designed specifically for the
Mac Mini within weeks of the official Apple announcement. In its
default configuration as I received it, the SleeveCase is merely what
it claims to be, a case into which a Mac Mini will fit. However,
Waterfield offers a configuration with a detachable shoulder strap.

Power of Privacy Concerns
Power of Privacy Concerns
05/15/2004 09:38 PM
I used to think that privacy concerns in America was strong enough
to thwart ideas
like single-signin and Gmail from being realized. My study of
the social networking
phenomenon have gradually changed my opinion to a point where I now
think the power
of privacy concerns can be dispelled with the right strategy.
Obviously, this
can't be done by just anyone and serious commitments must be made
in terms of time
and resources, but I now believe it can be done.
I have come to realize that concerns are temporal in nature and
requires constant
reinforcements to maintain them. A primary source of that
reinforcement is social
pressures. If people around you are concerned, you become
concerned. If
they seem unconcerned, level of your concern diminishes.
People who do not conform
to the group's level of concerns are pushed to the fringe and
eventually casted out,
either by the group or by their own choice.

Chinese Wi-Fi Security Concerns
Chinese Wi-Fi Security Concerns
12/14/2003 12:04 AMReuters offers more insight into Chinese WAPI standard, to which only
11 Chinese companies have access: The Chinese government started
requiring new Wi-Fi equipment to fully support the WAPI standard Dec.
1, with a grace period for existing devices and contracts until June,
even though the standard is entirely confidential and only 11 Chinese
companies are permitted to incorporate it. This is definitely a
protectionist move to make sure that Chinese firms have a role in the
growing Wi-Fi market. And, of course, the standard almost certainly
has a backdoor of some kind to allow government monitoring of Wi-Fi
traffic; otherwise, why go to these lengths to essentially ban or
disallow WPA?...
