for making ricin
04/19/2004 04:23 PM
Ken Olson, a former employee of Agilent in Spokane Washington, was sentenced to 13 years for making ricin, a highly toxic chemical derived from castor beans. It's very easy to make ricin and castor beans are legal to possess and are readily available. Prosecutors say Olson was plotting to kill his wife and take up with his mistress. Olson's wife and mistress have teamed up to defend him.
The trouble began Aug. 21, 2001, when a co-worker at Agilent found an 80-page document on how to make a bomb. The co-worker took the document to supervisors, who traced it to Olsen's computer. Company investigators examined his Internet logs and discovered Olsen had spent more than a year researching explosives and poisons. They found books in his cubicle on how to kill people without leaving a trace and a piece of paper with calculations of dosages for a 150-pound person — the approximate weight of his wife.

Status Inertia: The Speed Imperative in the Attainment of Community Status by Daniel Stewart
http://opensource .mit.edu/papers/stewart2.pdf

Abstract:
This paper examines the role of tenure in establishing social status within an online community of free software developers. As tenure increases, an actor's status becomes increasingly taken-for-granted, thus making it difficult for actors to generate mobility outside of their current social strata. The results of empirical analyses suggest that the broader community plays a major role in deciding one's social position-a judgment that can be made fairly quickly and decisively. Therefore, members of the community who desire high status should work quickly to establish a positive reputation or else run the risk of being cast into an inert low status social position.

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek
problems

Replay Radio geek solutions to geek
problems
09/21/2004 06:38 AM

The building I work in does not receive Radio receptions real good. The guys and I in the office like to listen to a particular radio show and we knocked our heads together for a while trying to figure out how to improve the reception. Fixing the reception problem proved to be impossible but we did find a geeks way to fix the problem.

I purchased Replay Radio and set it up at home to record the network stream of the program. It saves the recorded stream in MP3 format every 30 minutes and dumps it in a directory that I have mapped to a FTP server. I have a standard FTP client running on my desktop that downloads the MP3 to my laptop which is connected to the network and we load the MP3 up and listen to the program time delay.

My work does not allow for streaming audio. So to avoid confusion I asked permission to do this via our IT department and promised to keep the file sizes under control. They thought it was cool and gave the thumbs up. It worked out so well that several departments do the same thing and we have 2-3 national talk radio programs to listen to each day. Albeit time delay but it works. [Replay Radio]

" Replay Radio is an incredibly easy way to record radio broadcasts. It's like a "TiVo™ DVR" for the radio. Just pick your favorite radio show, or select a station and a time range, and Replay Radio records it for you. Hundreds of shows and stations are pre-programmed, making recording as easy as point and click."

Rafat Ali calls it "the craziest story he's ever heard" - I agree.

But I also call it the smartest business model - ever. It's all about the content and that's why Rafat's blog is taking off - as he's talking about talking about the content.

Next best thing to Rafat's model - is Arianna Huffington's model. Just get enough names (or apparent names - condoned by the name) to spout off - on anything.

I'd advertise. It's gonna go viral. For sure.

I can hear Jason Calacanis right now - scurrying around calling up Schwarzenegger and Brad Pitt.

And the fact that they got Jason Kottke as their guru! No wonder Jason retired from whatever else he was doing.

He's being annointed the Blogger nerd God. I can just imagine Larry David, Gwynth Paltrow or Barry Diller - calling up Jason at 4 AM - from the site of some movie being shot in Tangiers....

"Hello Jason, it's me - Gwynth."

"What's a trackback - again? I still don't get it?"

The Return Of Celebrity VCs

The Return Of Celebrity VCs 06/15/2004 06:24 PM
During the boom years, when venture capitalists were the new rockstars of the dot com era, we began to see the rise of "celebrity VCs." It was especially popular for former sports stars to jump into the venture investing business - even if they had no real business background or knowledge. Most of these VC firms didn't get very far, especially once the bubble popped. Now, however, as business seems to be picking up again, it looks like the celebrity VC may be back. The latest to throw his hat into the venture investing ring is U2 frontman Bono, who is joining the newly created Elevation Partners to invest in media and entertainment businesses. The other partners in the firm (Roger McNamee, John Riccitiello, Fred Anderson and others) all have a bit more experience, so you have to wonder if the Bono move is just to get them some more attention as they launch - or if Bono will really be taking meetings up on Sandhill Road with startups begging for money. It's a little unclear from the wording of the article exactly what Bono's role will be. Either way, it appears that Elevation isn't starting small. The rumor mill suggests they're looking for their initial fund to be a billion dollar fund.

Celebrity Scientologists 08/02/2004 03:02 AM
This is a frequently updated, exhaustively documented list of celebrity Scientologists:
Name: Sonny Bono

Profession: singer, actor, republican rep., pizza delivery man in congress member of the House Subcommittee on Copyrights and Intellectual Property

Status: introduced by Mimi Rogers; took some courses, says he's a roman catholic, not a scientologist (LA Times), but probably still in (used the word "enturbulate" in public around 26.4.1997)

He says in Esquire: "I openly studied scientology to the degree that they did some courses on ethics, and then said thank you and left. (...) The scientology - there was no cult thing there."

From drogers@huey.csun.edu (David D. Rogers): According to Corydon's book, he was quoted as saying: "My only sorrow is that L. Ron Hubbard left before I could thank him for my new life," in a full-page ad featured in several newspapers after Elron's death. died 6.1.1998

His widow, Mary Bono, has also done scientology courses

Achievement: Congressman (R), Palm Springs Mayor, Cher's ex-husband. Cher: "A politician is usually a null, so the job fits him". "The Progressive": (first mentioned to me in october 1995) "#8 on the list of 'The Ten Dimmest Bulbs in Congress' "Bono's mental shortcomings have long made him a subject of scorn among California politicians."

Getting Treos Into Celebrity Hands

Getting Treos Into Celebrity Hands 02/16/2004 02:51 PM
RIM started this with their Blackberry marketing program that tried to get the devices into the hands of specific people who would influence others, and Danger followed up doing the same thing with their Hiptop. Now, it appears that PalmOne/Handspring are going all out in making sure the rich, famous and (most importantly) well connected are carrying Treo 600s wherever they go. Maybe this explains why almost everyone is completely sold out of the devices - they're all going to people who are better connected than you or I. The article paints an interesting picture of the process of getting free stuff if you're rich and famous. Basically, you see one of your rich and famous friends with some cool gadget, and then you call up the company requesting your own. Even though you've got more money than you could ever know what to do with, the company then sends you a free one (or more, if you want...) so that you'll be sure to show it to your friends, and all those piddly little normal people will drool over it and have to go out and spend their hard-earned money on one themselves.
