Opinion Laundering Thrives

Opinion Laundering Thrives 06/23/2004 10:39 AM

  • Tim Lambert: W hen Think Tanks Attack. Why are all these think tanks so down on Open Source? Well, the Small Business Survival Committee is concerned that using open source will expose small business to the risk of lawsuits. Citizens Against Government Waste is concerned that the Government might waste money on Open Source. Defenders of Property Rights is concerned that Open Source might be a threat to intellectual property rights. However, I was able to detect a common theme to all their criticism. They all seem to be funded by Microsoft.
  • This piece isn't absolute proof, but it's another layer of circumstantial evidence that Microsoft is continuing its campaign of what I've called "opinion laundering" to make a case against LInux and other free software. (See previous looks at this subject here, here and here, for example.) Microsoft is hardly alone in this activity, of course. Lambert's article looks into the tobacco archives and shows how major think tanks were paid by tobacco companies and took positions congruent with the tobacco interests' own views. The bigger problem is that we often don't know who is funding which think tank, and many won't tell us. Even the ones that do say they're getting some money from companies like Microsoft won't say how much. If the "contribution" is .001 percent of annual funding, that's trivial. If it's 50 percent, that's not trivial. But we are never told this relevant information. None of this is illegal, but it's definitely sleazy. We need laws, not that this Congress or administration will every touch the topic, to force think tanks to reveal the sources and amounts of their funding in amounts over, say, $500. That would let individuals continue to contribute in privacy, but would shine a needed light on the opinion laundering that is now so prevalent. In the meantime, when a think tank takes any position on just about anything, your first instinct should be to ask, "Did someone pay for that opinion?"

Oracle, Hypocrisy and Opinion Laundering 05/09/2004 12:57 PM
On April 27, a Washington lobbying organization, the Association for Competitive Technology, or ACT, announced it had signed up two new members from Silicon Valley. One was VeriSign. The other was Oracle. Companies work with trade and lobbying organizations all the time. But this announcement, by a group best known for backing Microsoft in its antitrust battles, was surprising. Only four years ago, Oracle had done its best to discredit the organization it was now joining.

Tom's Networking, through which we found this link, shows a version of the branding with more attractive colors. In a related story, the group is also readying testing programs for IEEE 802.11i's final form, which they will label WPA2, and for 802.11e's Wireless Multimedia Extensions (WME) to improve streaming media over Wi-Fi networks, which they will call WSM for Wireless Scheduled Media. The group is also considering certifying EAP types....

    12/17/2003 02:24 PM
French President Suggests Banning Religious Symbols From the Washington Post: "French President Jacques Chirac asked parliament on Wednesday for a law banning Islamic head scarves and other religious insignia in public schools ... 'Secularism is one of the great successes of the Republic,' Chirac said in an address to the nation. 'It is a crucial element of social peace and national cohesion. We cannot let it weaken.' Chirac said he would push for a law to be enacted in time for the school year that begins next autumn. Islamic head scarves, Jewish skullcaps and large crucifixes would fall under the ban.

    Photoshop rips heavy cultural symbols
    out of artists' phrasebook
    01/08/2004 07:49 PM
Photoshop CS automatically detects images of US currency and prevents the manipulation, copying and pasting of same. When my grandfather was in hospital with Alzheimer's, one of his major causes of anxiety was money, but we could soothe him by giving him $20 "bills" we ran off an inkjet (fakes easily detected by anyone not suffering from senile dementia). The images on the US dollar, being a product of the US government, are not copyrightable.

The images on US currency are among the most ubiquitous in our society. They are freighted with heavy symbolism, and have constituted part of the artistic vocabulary of visual artists for generations. Thanks to Adobe's decision to exercise prior restraint over its customers -- to punish the innocent to get at the guilty -- currency images have been ripped out of the photoshopper's artistic phrasebook.

If we ever needed an example of the idea that "architecture is politics" and that "code is law," here it is.

And as if that wasn't enough, the scanning of all images for content reportedly creates a massive performance hit in Photoshop, as your CPU's cycles are hijacked to police your lawful activity. Link (via MeFi)
