FIX: Windows Media Player 9 Series quits
unexpectedly while you are playing
online content
07/13/2004 12:25 AM

When you are playing content from a network source, Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series may quit unexpectedly (crash) if Windows Media Player briefly loses the network connection and then tries to reconnect. If you are using Windows Media Player together with a host application such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, and Windows Media Player is embedded in the host application, the host application may quit unexpectedly if the network connection is lost.

When a content owner creates an audio or video stream, they can add script commands (such as URL script commands and custom script commands) to be encoded in the stream. When the stream is played back, the script commands can trigger events in an embedded player program, or they can open your browser and then navigate to a Web page. This behavior is by design

After applying the Update for Windows Media Player Script Commands (KB828026), some URL script commands do not fire even though they would be expected to do so. In addition to the URL script command issues, this package addresses an issue with the installer that would cause 100% CPU utilization in certain scenarios.

Media Player-less Windows 03/28/2005 03:55 PM

In my opinion, forcing Microsoft to ship media player-less Windows won't have any effect on Microsoft's media format dominance.  Instead, Microsoft should have been forced to place media player IP and code in the public domain as well as bundle several competitive media players.  Of course, the monopolist side of me still think anti-monopoly whiners are just wimps but I'll change my tune when I have a lucrative reason to.

The WMP-free versions of Windows XP Home and Professional will tentatively go by the moniker "Reduced Media Edition," BetaNews has learned.

Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 09/03/2004 08:18 AM
The most striking change to Microsoft Windows Media Player 10, the much-awaited upgrade to the player/jukebox that ships on most new PCs, is its dramatic cosmetic overhaul. Windows Media Player (WMP) no longer feels like a freebie utility thrown in with the OS (think Notepad), but is an application you'll actually want to use. By giving you easy access to all of your multimedia files (music, photos, and video) and helping you accomplish the tasks you're likely to want to do with them, WMP 10 at least equals — and in our estimation surpasses — the current leader in the field, MusicMatch Jukebox 9.

Removing Windows Media Player

Removing Windows Media Player 07/02/2004 01:22 AM
Microsoft apparently requires “greater clarification” on which specific files need to be removed so that it can comply with the EU’s court ruling. Microsoft has been ordered to remove it’s Media Player from Windows immediately, but apparently this has caused some confusion. Now if someone asks me to remove a program from my computer, I know that I am competent enough to understand what “files need to removed”. I believe this is just another Microsoft stall tactic and should be looked upon as such.

wmp10_ss.jpg imageCNet, among other places, is reporting that Microsoft is releasing a beta version of Windows Media Player 10 for public testing. Although leaked copies of the software have been available for the last week or so, the official release will allow everyone a chance to play with the new features, such as enhanced synchronization methods that keep some of the newer, more full-featured media players full of not only audio, but video and pictures, as well. And from this screenshot, it appears that Microsoft is adopting the Rip and Burn terminology that pretty much everyone else does. I've resisted upgrading even to 9, so far, and will probably refrain from 10, as well. I only use it to play movies, and I'm finding myself using Media Player Classic more and more.
