Tropical Storm Alex caused the delay of NASA’s MESSENGER Mercury satellite today. NASA has announced that they will try again at 2:16 a.m. EDT on Tuesday. By that time NASA expects the storm to have cleared out. It has been nearly 10 years since NASA launched a satellite to Mercury, and I can hardly wait to see what images MESSENGER will be sending back in the future.

NASA has waited three decades for a second look at the planet Mercury, but now will have to wait at least one day longer as stormy weather on Monday kept its MESSENGER Mercury satellite on the launch pad. Tropical Storm Alex dumped torrents of rain on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station throughout the day leading up to the scheduled lift-off, though launch weather officers had predicted the storm would move far enough north to allow the Boeing Co Delta 2 rocket to blast off.

But as the countdown approached lift-off, heavy anvil clouds continued to envelop the Cape and NASA scrubbed the launch for the day. NASA said it would try again to launch MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) at 2:16 a.m. EDT on Tuesday. Weather officers predicted a 70 percent chance of favorable weather. "Tropical Storm Alex should be out of the way tomorrow and improve the situation at least somewhat," said NASA spokesman George Diller.

Atmosphere
03/19/2005 02:23 AM

According to The New Scientist, Saturn’s white moon, Enceladus is surrounded by a thin, watery atmosphere. The moon is so tiny that it would not hold an atmosphere, so scientists think that the atmosphere is being created by more violent means such as volcanos or geysers.

The atmosphere is so thin it is invisible, but Cassini was able to discover it because it bends Saturn's magnetic fields. When the Sun ionises water molecules in Enceladus's atmosphere, the ions begin to be pulled by Saturn's magnetic field lines, which are rotating with the planet at a relative speed of 26 kilometres per second.

The magnetic field near the moon's atmosphere bends to accelerate the ions on Enceladus to that speed, says Christopher Russell, a Cassini team member and geophysicist at the University of California in Los Angeles, US.

"We can calculate how many ions it would take to bend the magnetic field by the amount seen," Russell told New Scientist. He estimates the moon is losing about 125 kilograms of water to space every second. That loss is too great for the atmosphere to be formed simply by the Sun's photons boiling off molecules from the moon's icy surface.

First, researchers at the University of California, San Diego discuss the importance of studying earthquakes on the moon, also known as moonquakes, and the Apollo Lunar Seismic Experiment (1). Users can discover the problems scientists must deal with when collecting the moon's seismic data. The students at Case Western Reserve University created the second website to address three missions the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS) has planned between now and 2010, including a mission to the moon (2). Visitors can learn about the Lunar-A probe that will be used to photograph the surface of the moon, "monitor moonquakes, measure temperature, and study the internal structure." Next, the Planetary Data Service (PDS) at the USGS offers users four datasets that they can use to create an image of a chosen area of the moon (3). Each dataset can be viewed as a basic clickable map; a clickable map where users can specify size, resolution, and projection; or an advanced version where visitors can select areas by center latitude and longitude. The fourth site, produced by Robert Wickman at the University of North Dakota, presents a map of the volcanoes on the moon and compares their characteristics with those on earth (4). Students can learn how the gravitational forces on the Moon affect the lava flows. Next, Professor Jeff Ryan at the University of South Florida at Tampa supplies fantastic images and descriptive text of the lunar rocks obtained by the Apollo missions (5). Visitors can find links to images of meteorites, terrestrial rocks, and Apollo landings as well. At the Science Channel website, students and educators can find a video clip discussing the geologic studies on the moon along with videos about planets (6). Users can learn about how studying moon rocks help scientists better understand the formation of the earth. Next, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum presents its research of "lunar topography, cratering and impacts basins, tectonics, lava flows, and regolith properties" (7). Visitors can find summaries of the characteristics of the moon and the main findings since the 1950s. Lastly, the USGS Astrogeology Research Program provides archived lunar images and data collected between 1965 and 1992 by Apollo, Lunar Orbiter, Galileo, and Zond 8 missions (8). While the data is a little old, students and educators can still find valuable materials about the moon's topography, chemical composition, and geology. Come and get it?
