Windows XP Starter Edition a No Starter

Windows XP Starter Edition a No Starter 06/23/2004 07:13 PM
Breaking News | BetaNews has confirmation that despite published reports, Microsoft is not preparing a major release of an entry level version of Windows dubbed Windows XP Starter Edition. Windows enthusiasts speculated that Windows XP Starter Edition was a realignment of the software giant's Office and Windows releases with Office 2003 Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Service Pack 2 that would effectively re-launch both products; however, Windows XP Starter Edition is merely the formal name given to a no-thrills version of the operating system that will be distributed solely in Thailand and Malaysia.

Windows XP Starter Edition

Windows XP Starter Edition 07/29/2004 08:41 PM

Direct and Related Links for 'Windows XP Starter Edition'

In an effort to fight Linux with the most effective line of defense they can think of, Microsoft is working to distribute a cheaper version of Windows called Windows XP Starter Edition. This is the beginning of a trend that indicates Microsoft is not going to lay down quietly as Linux use continues to spread worldwide. Man, remember when they used to say the Windows had no real viable competition? Looks like that is beginning…

Don't be startled if you hear talk of a "Windows XP Starter Edition." It's simply a new name for the cut-rate, stripped-down version of Windows that Microsoft began offering in Thailand last summer.

Windows XP Starter Edition for all?

Windows XP Starter Edition for all? 08/15/2004 09:32 AM
Microsoft have confirmed that Windows XP Starter Edition will be released in October and targetted at the Asian market. At the moment Starter Edition is a crippled version of Windows which lacks functionality for the average user. Users who will buy Starter Edition won't be able to use more than 3 windows at the same time, some keyboard functionality is restricted, no file-sharing, no print sharing and no support for local area networks.

The whole idea around Starter Edition is to market a cheap version of Windows that end users will buy and then to convince the user to upgrade to the full version of Windows. It's not clear just how cheap Microsoft are planning to make Starter Edition at present.

Could Microsoft eventually start using this tactic worldwide? If all goes well in India then this pilot scheme would eventually make its way into the United States and Europe. Industry analysts like Gartner are labelling Microsoft's Starter Edition as a "steer away" product. Time will only tell.

RFID Home Starter Kit

RFID Home Starter Kit 03/23/2005 06:50 AM

rfid_kit_large_1_.jpgiAutomate is selling their RFID Starter kit, a $480 package that includes a long range RFID reader, their RFID software plugin (for your existing home-automation setup) and the required cables. Attaching a $30-$60 RFID tag to your household assets will let you track their movements, control security features based on personal presence, receive notification when people arrive or leave the house and even "get reminders to take out the trash if the garbage can is still detected at the house on garbage night." The system really showcases what the future with RFID will enable but at a cost that might prove daunting for those of us who haven't already splurged on a home automation system.

Microsoft has released screenshots and photos of their soon to be released Windows XP starter edition.

SE is a cut down version of Windows XP, with less features and restrictions placed on its use. Microsoft hopes that a low price, cut down version, will help in countries where piracy is a major issue; East-Asia is one of the main places that Microsoft hopes the product will help.

Windows XP SE will be launched in October later this year.

Windows XP Starter Edition Revealed

Windows XP Starter Edition Revealed 06/23/2004 03:41 PM
Microsoft is currently planning a new edition to the Windows XP family of operating systems, namely "Starter Edition". Starter Edition is the name of a previously announced effort to deliver a tailored and localized Windows product to Thailand and Malaysia, as part of Microsofts efforts to enable access to technology. Previous rumours suggested that Windows XP Starter Edition would include a set of applications on top of the standard Windows XP installation (including Office 2003). We cannot confirm these reports but are awaiting a statement from Microsoft Press.

Windows Starter Edition Limitations

Windows Starter Edition Limitations 06/05/2005 11:46 PM

Windows XP: The featured article over at Wikipedia today was on Windows XP, and it included this bit explaining what limitations are contained in Windows XP Starter Edition — the Windows version for developing countries (launched in India two days ago).

[...] display resolution can only be up to 800 x 600 pixels, only three applications may be run at the same time, any application may have no more than three windows open, PC-to-PC home networking and printer sharing is not available and only a single user account is allowed.

Um, sounds sucky. But here's the rationale for it.

It is seen as an effort to fight unauthorized copying of Windows XP, and also to counter the spread of the open-source Linux operating system which has been gaining popularity in Asia and South America.
