T-Online Buying AOL?

T-Online Buying AOL? 11/13/2003 01:36 PM
The Register is reporting that T-Online, the ISP part of Deutsche Telekom, is talking to Time Warner about buying AOL, though they also get a T-Online person to deny the rumor. Time Warner has repeatedly said that they have no plans to sell AOL, but there certainly are executives there who would love to see it go. Of course, a more likely discussion would be more informal discussions to see if T-Online would want to buy AOL's German (or European) operations, and not the whole thing. However, the article doesn't suggest that at all, and seems to indicate they're looking at the whole thing.

Sun contemplates buying Novell 08/02/2004 04:29 AM
AN INTERVIEW with Sun's president Jonathan Schwartz in today's Wall Street Journal quotes him as saying his firm could buy Novell and other firms to position itself against IBM in the marketplace. In fact, according to the article, Sun discusses takeovers every day, Schwartz tells the Journal and is in a position to do so because of its vast cash reserves.

He told the newspaper that a Novell acquisition would wrong foot IBM and Red Hat, but he also said that Sun hadn't formally opened acquisition talks with the Utah based company. Novell may not want to be seduced by Sun Microsystems.

Buying the Disability Lobby, and More

Buying the Disability Lobby, and More 06/11/2004 07:05 PM

  • NY Times: The Disability Lobby and Voting. ome supporters of voter-verifiable paper trails question whether disability-rights groups have gotten too close to voting machine manufacturers. Besides the donation by Diebold to the National Federation of the Blind, there have been other gifts. According to Mr. Dickson, the American Association of People with Disabilities has received $26,000 from voting machine companies this year. The real issue, though, is that disability-rights groups have been clouding the voting machine debate by suggesting that the nation must choose between accessible voting and verifiable voting.
  • The voting-machine scandal just grows and grows. When the National Federation of the Blind accepts $1 million from Diebold, maker of the scandalously lousy machines that California recently banned, you have to shake your head in amazement at how putrid this entire situation is getting. The League of Women Voters' support of unverifiable voting machines is another astounding situation. Barbara Simons, a California woman who's an expert in computer technology, is running for president (AP) of the organization in a protest vote. I hope she wins and, with others who can't fathom the league's refusal to recognize reality, gets the organization to change its odd stance. The fact remains simple. There is no way anyone should trust to verify the validity of votes cast with some of these electronic voting machines unless we create a voter-verifiable paper trail and have frequent, random audits of precincts. Disabled people deserve a way to cast a fair vote, honestly counted. Some of the groups representing them -- taking money from the voting machine lobby -- would rather risk entire elections than make sure we do this right. It's a shame.

  • Washington Post: The Bush Money Machine: Building War Chest With Few Restraints. As Bush "Pioneers" who had raised at least $100,000 each for the president's reelection campaign, or "Rangers" who had raised $200,000 each, the men and women who shot skeet with Cheney, played golf with pros Ben Crenshaw and Fuzzy Zoeller and laughed at the jokes of comedian Dennis Miller are the heart of the most successful political money operation in the nation's history. Since 1998, Bush has raised a record $296.3 million in campaign funds, giving him an overwhelming advantage in running against Vice President Al Gore and now Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.). At least a third of the total -- many sources believe more than half -- was raised by 631 people.
  • It's actually a tiny amount of money when you consider the return on investment -- notably the hundreds of billions in tax breaks for the wealthiest Americas while moving the tax burden to those who actually work for a living, not to mention the undermining of environmental and worker-safety programs.

What Did I Drink Before Buying That

    05/10/2004 04:31 AM
It's almost comical just how many consumer products brands are getting themselves involved with downloadable music, whether by offering their own branded download system or by partnering with a more well known download store to offer free tracks. The latest of the bunch appears to be Heineken who is offering a similar deal to the Pepsi/iTunes free song downloads promotion - except that the Heineken one doesn't use iTunes. Instead it's using some other service, meaning that the free songs you get from Heineken won't work with the free songs that you get from Pepsi, and your entire music collection is going to be segregated by what beverage you happened to drink before downloading it. This is progress?

Why I won't be buying any Muller
    products...
    07/10/2004 05:41 PM

I sent this letter to consumers@muller.co.uk today because I finally had enough of the stupid bloody adverts in which mincing gay men flounce around the place looking at straight men's cocks. I'm sorry to be crass, but it pisses me off...

    Dear Sir / Madam,

I am writing to complain about the Muller adverts which include a highly camp and stereotypical gay air steward mincing through a hotel (or on a plane) staring suggestively at the crotches of vulnerable and anxious-looking straight men. I was horrified when this advert was on a few years ago, but had assumed that it had been withdrawn because it was so crass. Now I see that it has returned to our screens I've decided I should complain.

As a gay man I find this representation both insulting and dangerous. When I was growing up gay I was under the misapprehension that gay people were dirty and sickening and pathetic because of adverts like this. When I became an adult I realised that these stereotypes were only used by small-minded, petty, vindictive and scared little people - people desperate to 'belong' and unable to handle anything even vaguely different from themselves. Unfortunately other gay teenagers didn't have the luxury of coming to terms with these images as easily as I did. While working with the Bristol University Gay and Lesbian society, I met and tried to counsel an enormous number of young gay men who were coming out and who had experienced considerable abuse - including harrassment at school, on the street and even - in one occasion - being stabbed by their own father for being a 'disgusting sissy'. Your advert is prolonging precisely the stereotypes that cause children to be harrassed in this way - and contributing to the culture that results in twice as many attempted suicides and successful suicides among gay teenagers than straight, as well as an enormous over-representation of gay teenagers among the homeless.

I will not be buying any more of your products until I am reassured that this advert has been withdrawn and I will be doing my best to encourage other people to boycott your products as well. I have also written a complaint to Ofcom.

    Yours,

    Tom Coates
