Will Longhorn become a Microsoft Linux
Distro?
01/02/2004 12:03 PM
New Year's prediction: Longhorn will never ship, but Microsoft Linux will. Even if I'm wrong, it's clear that software development is headed for a new place, and the end game that most observers saw even five years ago -- that MS would win it all -- doesn't seem as likely on the eve of 2004. That said, Microsoft isn't going to go away, in this author's opinion.

Building a distro

Building a distro 01/03/2005 06:17 AM
You download a CD or maybe a diskette image, transfer it to the appropriate media, boot your computer with it, and voilą, you're running Linux. It sounds so simple -- but a great deal of work goes into creating that software. Beginning about two years ago, I spent a year and a half building a desktop-oriented GNU/Linux distribution named MfxLinux, designed to be tightly integrated with Crowell Systems' Medformix medical office management system. Along the way, as with any project a lot of design and implementation decisions had to be made -- some of which worked out better than others.

Linspire (formerly known as LindowsOS) has consistently made an attractive, easy-to-install and easy-to-use GNU/Linux distribution. With the 2.6.10 Linux kernel and a recent build of X.org, Linspire has fixed some of the video driver problems I had with the 4.0 and 4.5 versions. As in previous releases, Linspire includes many proprietary add-ons "mainstream" desktop users enjoy, but in return it comes with proprietary strings attached.

Using a Linux server with a Mac

Using a Linux server with a Mac 08/27/2004 02:00 PM
Until recently, I was using a Blue & White G3/350 as my file server. When the drive died suddenly, I decided to replace it with a Linux box, since the G3 can't handle drives larger than 120G and the IDE performance is poor by today's standards. With some trial and error, I found an optimal setup for using Linux as a file server for Macs.

Ubuntu has been shipping free cd's of its distro for some time now - actually, sets containing a live (Knoppix-like - just boot, no install) CD and a 'regular' CD, for Intel, Apple, and AMD64 architectures. They're in fact shipping *loads* of such cd's - for free - if you go to their shipping page, the default number to order is 10. Probably not a bad way to introduce acquaintances to Linux.
