Congrats Ramu et al. OK Judith - here's your next task. Who cares if there are 300 or 3,000 YASNSs. But we DO care when some of them reach 1M members! So who else is part of the 1M club? And BTW I'm not talking about dating sites. I'm talking about sites who have over 1M end-users inter-connected together through degrees of relationship. Wi-Fi Hits MariettaWi-Fi Hits Marietta 02/11/2004 10:56 AM Another story in the ongoing saga of Wi-Fi expansion in public spaces: When Wi-Fi starts to hit a town -- in this case, Marietta, Georgia -- it's like electricity or phone service first getting turned on. But more so: people now know the context for what public space Wi-Fi could mean, and many individuals and businesses in every community are already using Wi-Fi for their local networks. The anticipation and expectation is quite high. Eventually, it will be just another technology, but it's still fresh and sparkling in many parts of the U.S. and the rest of the world.... PHP 5 Hits The StreetPHP 5 Hits The Street 07/14/2004 10:09 AM PHP version 5.0.0 has now officially been released, bringing a large number of long-overdue changes to PHP.
The biggest improvements are the chan ges to Zend, the core of PHP, that makes PHP a full-fledged OO language now. Features like private, static, abstract, and final methods, as well as the option to (somewhat) strongly type variables, mean that PHP can now be used to build serious object models. When using OO techniques in PHP 4, I tended to run into the barriers caused by these missing features, and it always felt like the language was trying to push me into writing spaghetti code. Sadly, still no schema support. Click here to comment on this entry Red Hat hits the desktopRed Hat hits the desktop 05/04/2004 09:21 AM 'bout time too, say analysts... Greatest hitsGreatest hits 03/19/2003 10:44 PM Now and again, when I have time, I like to write little funny stories. I don’t actually have time to write one right now, but I figured I’d point to a few of them, in case you’re relatively new to my weblog and may have missed them. Here’s one, probably the most popular, on doing bong hits with Bill Gates. My personal favorite is on how it’s so hard to teach squirrels to play baseball. Here’s my BBEdit song. Here’s one on the inherent evil of that Three Dog Night song Joy to the World. Then there’s my list of top ten really mean put-downs. Though it’s not terrifically funny, I like it as a rant: how I don’t want wearable computers. Here’s a post on how I like to say inappropriate things. I compare a part of my anatomy to a roll of duct tape. Another personal favorite is Frank, a fable. Wayport Hits 6,300 LocationsWayport Hits 6,300 Locations 01/04/2005 02:27 AM Wayport has 6,300 locations equipped; 5 million sessions in 2004: Wayport announced that they have exceeded 6,300 hotspots between locations with which they have directly contracted and those that they operate as a managed service, primarily for SBC Communications's FreedomLink network. The company also said that they had 5 million connections in 2004, with 600,000 in October alone. Wayport had about 1,000 location at the end of 2003, and a significant subset included in-room wired broadband hotels with Wi-Fi just in lobbies. Virtually all new locations are Wi-Fi only in retail establishments. Dan Lowden, vice president of marketing at Wayport, said in an interview on Monday that Wayport believes they are now the biggest Wi-Fi network in the U.S., having exceeded T-Mobile's count, which is just under 5,300 according to T-Mobile's location finder. (This doesn't include T-Mobile's fee-based roaming partners.) "We're very very excited about it; it's a big milestone for us. We're excited to be the biggest in the United States," Lowden said. Lowden said that Wayport is adding about 150 locations per week. They expect to exceed 6,000 McDonald's restaurants by third quarter of 2005, pushing their total over 10,000 locations. Because certain large footprints have already been tied up, such as many coffee chains, and because of Wayport's exclusive deal for fast-food restaurants with McDonald's, Wayport is pushing into different kinds of spaces and services. For instance, their deal with Hertz gives them an alternate presence at airports. And Wayport will work with venues that may not need public Wi-Fi at all, or it's an adjunct to the real purpose: private services like cashless transactions (which they're doing with McDonald's) and security. Lowden also noted that even with the hotel market so widely built out with high-speed services, there's still a lot of room to grow or rebuild. "We continue to see opportunities where folks have had three or four service providers over the last three or four years," he said. Wayport's now an established firm with major partners making it easy for them to bat clean up in cases such as these. The company has grown fairly rapidly in the last year to handle the new contracts with over 330 employees now, with 150 hired in the last year....
