Mac OS X Tiger to Ship on April 29
04/12/2005 10:09 AMApple has announced the date when it's new version of OS X - Tiger,
v10.4 - will go on sale. Friday, April 29, at 6pm is the magic time -
$129 or £89, the price. As Neowin has previously reported, among the
new features will be an updated Mail client and iCal app. Apple also
says it will include the new version 7 of Quicktime, and native 64-bit
application support. Preorders are now being accepted.
Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO, said: "Mac OS X Tiger is the most
innovative and secure desktop operating system ever created. Tiger's
groundbreaking new features like Spotlight and Dashboard will change
the way people use their computers, and drive our competitors nuts
trying to copy them."
Spotlight is Apple's new search system, which it touts as being a
"new, lightning-fast way for users to find virtually anything
stored on their Mac". Dashboard, meanwhile, allows users to put
widgets on their desktop for anything from the weather to tracking
flights. Also new, an updated iChat, Automator - which can make
repetitive tasks easier - and RSS reader support in the Safari
browser.
In other news, the BBC
reports that a group of US newspapers, along with
the AP news agency, are to back bloggers being sued by Apple for
leaking details of the new features. A court had ruled they should be
forced to reveal the sources of the information - Dave Tomlin,
assistant general counsel for AP, said the case had potential
implications journalists of all kinds. "For us, this case is
about whether the First Amendment protects journalists from being
turned into informants for the government, the courts or anybody else
who wants to use them that way," Mr Tomlin said.

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA

IFD-iV Flash Drives Masquerade as ATA
Hard Drives
07/15/2004 08:59 AM
For embedded computing
hackers, mass storage (like hard drives) is often the most frustrating
piece of the puzzle, as the fragile and power-hungry spin of the hard
drive is usually the last non-solid-state part in the whole
deployment. And while most engineers will just use a Compact Flash
card, sometimes the only option is an ATA (hard drive) connection;
that's where the IFD-iV flash memory parts from IO Data Device
Corporation come in. Basically just flash memory drives, the defining
feature of the IFD-iVs (besides fairly rugged operating
specifications) is that they use the standard ATA connection of a hard
drive, meaning they can be deployed in place of hard drives when
necessary. Models up to 2GB in capacity will be available for around
$2,100 -- maybe we'll just deal with the fragile hard drives
instead.

Who Made Your Blank Discs?
03/19/2005 02:22 AMYou may think that you know what manufacturer made you blank CD or
DVD discs, it was Fujifilm, TDK
Electronics, Ritek, Verbatim, Imation, Hewlett-Packard or another
recognizable brand. You would be wrong. In
fact, most of this blank media is manufactured by a short list of
companies: India's Moser Baer, Japan's Ricoh and Taiyo Yuden, and
Taiwan's CMC Magnetics, Prodisc Technology and Optodisc Technology.
The major name brands that actually create their own CD’s
are Sony and Philips.
Of the manufacturers that actually make the media, Taiyo Yuden is
the one recognized as the best, with the highest quality product.
Trying to figure out who makes your media is not easy. The best
website for talking about the brands and the media and what are some
great deals for media online is Digitalfaq.com.
Here is more from the article on Wired… Some media can
burn reliably faster than its rated speed. A DVD+R might be rated at
4X burn speed, yet with certain recorders, it can be burned at 8X. The
factors that contribute to high- or low-quality media are varied.
Several choices are on the market, and which one is used can affect a
disc's reflectivity, and thus its readability. But beyond that, says
Pieper, "if your dye is unevenly spread, or the other materials and
workmanship are shoddy, it doesn't matter what dye is used." Also,
Pieper says if the glue job on the platter is sloppy, "the media
literally falls apart." Taiyo Yuden media
stands as the golden child for blank-media enthusiasts. Popular
opinion swings the other way for manufacturers such as CMC Magnetics
and Princo.

Xbox 2 to Use Proprietary Discs?
12/15/2003 03:16 PMMicrosoft's career page contains a very interesting job advertisement.
The ad says that the Xbox Team "is looking for a strong PM/Engineer to
manage the design and development of the Xbox Game Disc for the next
generation Xbox console." Moreover, the ad stresses the importance of
anti-piracy technology in the development of the new discs for the
next generation console. Although it is possible that MS will simply
try to incorporate sophisticated anti-piracy features in the now
standard DVD medium, it is probably easier for them to develop a
proprietary format. Nintendo did it with their GameCube discs, and
they were quite effective in combating piracy -- so why not Microsoft?

New Sony Cybershots, HP Photosmarts,
Including Sony T3 (Rawr!)
08/30/2004 09:56 AM
Gott im Himmel, ze cameras! There have been like
two dozen new cameras announced in the last few weeks as various
manufacturers start ramping up for Christmas, and Sony and HP are no
exception. Among the new Sonys announced today are two pocket-sized
beauties that I want right now: the T3, an update to the T1 and
Japan-only T11, a 5.1-megapixel camera that is Sony's thinnest at less
than three-quarters of an inch; and the DSC-L1, a candy bar
4.1-megapixel unit that is only 3.75-inches long. Just when I was
ready to buy a new camera Sony has to muck it all up with at least two
that really do it for me. Oh, and there's also the new DSC-V3, a
7-megapixel unit that looks mighty fine, as well.
The HPs, well, they are okay, but I'll be honest, they don't get me
all riled up as much as the two featherweight cameras from Sony do. If
they fixed the middling image quality of the T1 in the T3, that may be
my next sidearm. Living Room has a bunch of the press releases, and
I'll add to this post if any more info comes through during the
day.

While Sony Tries To Become Apple,
Samsung Tries To Become Sony
05/13/2004 03:41 AMHas anyone noticed that it's becoming increasingly difficult to tell
Samsung from Sony? It appears that almost everything Sony does,
Samsung does as well. So, it's really no surprise that a little over
a month after Sony announced plans to
build
out retail stores more for advertising than for sales,
Samsung plans to
do the same thing. Of course, while Sony says they're more
interested in using the stores for advertising, Samsung has gone one
step further. They believe so strongly that this "store" is just for
advertising that
they won't sell you anything at the store.
It's for showcasing products only. Also, a random note in the
article, but the same week that Sony and Nintendo announced their
plans for their next generation handheld gaming devices, this article
also mentions that Samsung is planning for its own N-Gage like
phone/gaming device. Apparently, the dismal failure of the N-Gage
isn't enough to scare them off.

Upgrade to gcc 3.3 and/or 10.3
Upgrade to gcc 3.3 and/or 10.3
10/28/2003 11:07 PM
It is now possible to upgrade Fink to take full advantage of the gcc
3.3
compiler, or to use OS X 10.3 if you have that installed. Binary
packages
corresponding to these upgrades are not yet available, so if you make
extensive use of binary packages you may wish to wait a few days
before
upgrading.
If you wish to perform this upgrade, and you had previously installed
the
June 2003 Developer Tools update from Apple, you will need to install
the August 2003 Developer Tools update BEFORE you upgrade Fink. Under
10.3, be sure to install XCode from the XCode disk before upgrading
Fink.
Running "fink selfupdate" should perform the upgrade for you. The
latest
version of the fink package manager will automatically detect which
version of OS X and which version of gcc you have installed, and will
adjust itself accordingly.
If you wish to do a fresh install of Fink on a 10.3 system, we
recommend
bootstrapping from
source, starting from fink-full-0.6.0.tar.gz available
on fink's sourceforge
download page. You'll need XCode for this as
well.
Also note that once you have Fink version 0.15.0 or higher, you do
not need to install system-xfree86 anymore. Fink is
capable of automatically determining your system-xfree86 version if
you
don't already have any fink x11 packages installed. If you currently
have an old system-xfree86 package of any kind installed, please run
the
following:
sudo dpkg -r --force-all system-xfree86 system-xfree86-42 \

More Reasons Not To Upgrade
More Reasons Not To Upgrade
08/12/2004 10:26 PMOne common wisdom in the Macintosh land is to never install updates
from Apple immediately. Wait a while, and let all the other beta
testers upgrade and report their successs or failture before you do
so. Who knows, maybe Apple will even pull the update so that they can
work on it somemore before
you update?
But now, there is
another reason why you shouldn't update so quickly: find out if the
latest and greatest Apple patch will disable your beloved hack --
whether it is to play Windows Media files through your AirPort
Express, or copy your RealNetwork files to your iPod.
Sometimes,
the computer industry can make one sad.

Thanks to new identification technology built into the
Internet’s root servers, IPv6 allows for a dramatic increase of
numerical addresses. The new capacity will allow for multiple billions
of numbers. In theory, this will allow for an almost infinite number
of computers to be connected to the internet in the future….

05/12/2004 07:01 AMAn upgrade to the RSS parser
An upgrade to the RSS parser
11/18/2002 12:58 PMA while back I read on Dive Into Mark a rant about the sheer volume of
traffic people hitting off of his RSS feed were causing. At the time
I was developing my RSS reader that is in use now at this site. It's
completely written by me, and I'm happy with it. It extracts all of
the descriptions, links, and titles out of RSS feeds in any version
(atleast I haven't experienced otherwise in my browsing) and returns
them in an associative array. Also, it caches the RSS files in
serialized format so that it doesn't have to repeatedly hit the
servers the RSS files reside on, and subsequent requests do not
require reparsing. Instead, it only requests the file if the cached
file was written more than an hour and a half ago.
But, my RSS parser still did not meet the need described in the above
linked Dive into Mark article. Basically, Mark (and others) only want
their RSS feeds being requested if they have been modified recently.
"Recently" is defined by Mark as 3 hours, which is reasonable. I
didn't know how to do this with my RSS parser, so I did some research.
I found some information on various sites about doing conditional GET
statements with PHP, and now my parser will only fetch the file off
the remote server if it has been modified within the last three hours.
I am now using this new version of my parser. The parser is not
perfect, but I really like it. To view the source of it, click here.
An article will follow soon.

More on the Typekey upgrade...
More on the Typekey upgrade...
05/16/2004 12:18 PMSo my installation of Movable Type has never been the simplest of
things. I've had to use cgiwrap to avoid some of the more arcane
problems with pair's process throttling and I've got MT installed in a
completely different directory and domain to my site. For someone with
as little overt server knowledge as myself, this means that every time
something's supposed to be a simple installation or adaptation
process, everything goes completely wrong. This is all by way of me
saying that I've still got lots of problems around the place with
integrating the Typekey
registration system, including but not limited to it randomly not
working, having lots of really nasty preview screens that remain
totally untemplated and generally feeling more than a little rough
around the edges. I'll endeavour to get it all sorted out this evening
so that the Monday morning crowd don't start snarking out at me...
Plus: Lots of actually interesting posts on real subjects to
come soon!
