Roadless Rules for Forests Set Aside
(washingtonpost.com)
07/12/2004 10:41 PM

washingtonpost.com - The Bush administration said yesterday it plans to overturn a Clinton-era rule that made nearly 60 million acres of national forest off-limits to road-building and logging, setting aside one of the most sweeping land preservation measures in decades.

Roadless Act under attack. 07/13/2004 01:46 PM
Roadless Act under attack. Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman announced today the plan to lift a Clinton-era ban on building roads into wilderness areas on National Forest Service lands. Instead of keeping the ban at a federal level, the decision on wether or not to allow roads to be built would now be deffered to state governers.

I can't help but wonder, how is this in the public's interests at all? It is unreasonable to paint this as, "the biggest single giveaway to the timber industry in the history of the national forests", or does this really have value that the average American could benefit from?

Act TODAY to save California's
old-growth forests

When I lived in San Francisco, I made no secret of the fact that the city and its environs really bummed me out, There were the ocassional highlights, like Fry's Electronics and the Musee Mechanique, but in the main, San Francisco left me cold.

There's one major exception to this, though: the ancient redwoods across the Golden Gate Bridge, in Muir woods and elsewhere. These millennia-old giants are Northern California's most beautiful and humbling feature. Standing alongside of one was like being in the presence of something holy. I think that if I'd spent more time with them, I might have stayed in California.

Today, California's old-growth forests are being indiscriminately logged. Conservation of these irreplaceable trees is a nonpartisan issue: it's an issue of humanity. If you love life, if you love your children, if you love your world, then saving these trees is something you should support.

The California Heritage Tree Preservation Act (SB 754) is being voted on today (August 4th) by California's Assembly Appropriations Committee. Before you go to work this morning, send your California Assembly Member an email and a fax in support fo SB 754:

I urge your support of SB 754, the Heritage Tree Preservation Act. This bill has been carefully written to protect some of California's largest and oldest trees while minimizing impacts to landowners, jobs and state revenues. The bill minimizes and offsets costs and it preserves revenues to the state from tourism, recreation and fisheries.

Fewer than one percent of California's old-growth trees remain standing on non-federal forestland. SB 754 will protect these trees and the ecological and economic benefits they bring to our state. Millions of tourists flock to California's forests each year to witness these towering giants with their own eyes. The trees protected by this bill are among the oldest, tallest, and largest living things on earth.

Please approve SB 754 and help us preserve California's ancient trees for future generations.

Court Rules Evel Knievel Is A Pimp;
Knievel Rules Judges Are Bimbos
01/04/2005 08:20 PM
Really not quite sure what to make of this one, but it's too amusing to pass up. Apparently, a few years ago, ESPN posted a picture of famed daredevil Evel Knievel with his arms around two women (one of whom was his wife) with the caption: "You're never too old to be a pimp." Knievel, not realizing this was a (weak) attempt at complimenting him, sued ESPN for defamation. A lower court tossed out the ruling, and he appealed. Now the Appeals Court has ruled against him as well, noting that, based on the context no one is actually going to think Knievel is a "pimp," and, in fact that the statement was supposed to be a positive one, as the slang of the day suggests. Knievel, apparently lacking a sense of irony over this particular case, has responded by calling the judges "bimbos." The full quote is: "They ruled against the law. What good is law in the United States of America if five or six goddamn bimbos are going to rule against it?" You think he intended that as a compliment? Anyway, in the meantime, feel free to go on captioning photos on the web while calling people pimps.

Online Resume Rules Sound Like Offline
Resume Rules
09/13/2004 02:14 PM
USA Today is claiming that the rules have changed for resumes, now that they're mostly sent via email instead of snail mail. However, when they get into the details, they sound amazingly like the "rules" many of us learned back in the days before you emailed resumes: focus on results from previous jobs (read: throw in lots of useless percentages to make it look like you improved something), use "descriptive or significant terms" (read: make sure you include the BS buzzwords-of-the-moment to make it through that first pass filter), don't send the wrong cover letter to the wrong company (read: don't be completely stupid), and don't apply "above your skill level" (read: don't waste HR's time so much). I remember hearing all of these years ago as well, and they don't seem any different in this "new age of electronic resumes" as the article would have you believe. Then, of course, there's the biggest recommendation for this supposed new age: they suggest you spam as many companies as possible. Again, has there ever been a time when people were told to send out fewer resumes? If anything, it seems like this strategy is the wrong strategy in the digital age where HR folks are so inundated with resumes that some have found that going back to paper resumes is much more effective in getting attention.

Why Mac Rules, Pt X 05/06/2004 08:38 AM
Today, at the office: a guy stands up, and bellows at me in a very astonished voice: "You have the Dr. Snuggles theme song in your playlist!?"

You know, you learn interesting things from people if you peek at their music collection. And iTunes music sharing over the LAN is one of those things that boggles your mind.

I was in a hotel the other day, connected to the local network. I started iTunes and found like six people sharing their music over Rendezvous. So I got to peek inside the heads of complete strangers, sitting somewhere in the building, happily doing their own stuff, while I see and find interesting new music completely effortlessly. It's like listening to everybody else's personal radio stations, except that you get to mix and match and shuffle to your heart's content.

As I hope we all know, Google has fixed the toolbar problems, albeit after people started complaining.

Some Say New 5GHz Rules Not Enough 11/14/2003 05:12 PM
The New America Foundation, Media Access Project, and some vendors say that the FCC hasn't gone far enough by adding more spectrum to the unlicensed band around 5 GHz: They complain that because the spectrum is high on the band and because of the power constraints set by the FCC, rural WISPs still can't adequately serve customers. They are asking for more unlicensed spectrum in the lower bands where signals can better penetrate interference like trees and travel farther. Rural operators and vendors who try to serve them have long discussed the fact that while the existing power limitations may be useful in cities they unduly strap the potential of wireless in rural communities. Dave Hughes, who has done tons of research on the use of wireless in remote areas, has often suggested that the FCC might set different rules in rural areas. That's a good idea. But I fear that the needs of the rural communities may not mean enough to the FCC to encourage the commission to consider accommodating them....
